Prix Pictet 2023 - Looking at the winner's work

THIS VIDEO: Today I am going to look at this years winners of the Prix Pictet 2023. There is value in looking closely at why images win competitions. Judges have their own biases and so all competition judging is subjective. Also, various styles are in vogue at different times, so a great essay shot in a out-of-fashion style can sometimes miss out. We are definitely going through a very femininely orientated stage at the moment- so during the past decade - a lot of the work that wins competitions is created in a style that is soft and muted.
This competition is a big deal for photographers who are working in the sustainability and environmental arenas. Over 3000 photographers were nominated for the competition and the winner receives $109 000 dollars. This year’s theme was called Human - during the ten years that the competition has been active - they have had themes like water, space, fire and growth. This year the winner is Gauri Gill and she was selected from a shortlist of twelve photographers. I will take a closer look at the shortlisted work that stands out for me and discuss what the photographers have got right.

As someone working on a diptych project, I couldn't agree more about your assessment of what you have shown. The rest are absolutely magnificent.

An instructive view of how to critique and appreciate individual photographers' works. Quite amazing how each photographer in this video has expressed the humanity behind each entry. Superb. And thank you.

❤ Important topic! I consider myself open minded but sometimes I wonder about “award winning” images on various platforms. 🇨🇦✌️ Greetings from Canada, it’s 3AM here 😊

Great essay - so useful hearing your insights on these photographers and the relationship between their work and the contest. Looking forward to following up on several of them. Thank you.

Thank you for the lecture. I think its a typical Scandinavian trait to let the Nature be dominant over the human .

Another great video. I agree with you when you say you prefer the Sweet Nothings entry. They are deceptively simple till you looks at the details and see they are loaded with meaning. A 21st century take on August Sander

"if you have too much emotional attatchmant to the outcome" 👉 brilliant wisdom. Althoug I think you are hunting "WOKE" images and I'll have to unsub at this point.
