PRIVATE TOUR! SECRETS of Antique CERAMICS (Delft, Faience & Majolica) w

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

For 1000 years, artists have created masterworks with tin-glazed earthenware, though its European heyday was the Renaissance era. Delft, Faience & Majolica are just some of the names used to describe this rare art form. What exactly is it and how is it made? With our friends Stephanie Jarvis & Philip Janssen from ‪@TheChateauDiaries‬ , we visit the atelier of France's oldest Ceramic Master, Michel Boillot, and step back in time for a private tour of his exceptional atelier, garden and home. We even see him paint a tile before our eyes! Will he allow us to buy some of his treasures? Meet good friend and fellow chatelaine Anne as we attempt our own masterpieces at home, including an effort to create Delft-style tiles using more modern techniques. Will we succeed?

ABOUT US:
Hello! I’m Vivienne, the châtelaine of a small 19th century neo-Renaissance castle in the Loire Valley of France, which I share with my delightful (and wonderfully funny!) husband, Simon, our daughter, and -whenever possible- lovely friends and family.
This is not our first chateau! 23 years ago, we bought a much larger castle nearby, which we loved with all our hearts. However, nearly 2 decades, many happy memories, countless renovations, and several small fortunes later, we made the very difficult, empty-nesting decision to downsize. With great luck and perseverance, we found our current petit château, which we are now decorating and updating with love, humour, comfort, and -of course- antiques and art!
We adore France and its many unique facets: its people, culture, landscapes, wine, food, art, and history. We also love being surrounded by châteaux, both public and private, which we can explore together! After 20 years here, we have learned many things about living in France, renovating châteaux, and appreciating the extraordinary riches surrounding us. We originally decided to make these videos as a way to share our lives with our loved ones worldwide during the pandemic lockdowns. However, we soon realised that many others are at home alone, and it is our privilege to open our home to you, our new friends. We hope you will join us on our adventures in this exceptional location, and we look forward to sharing a little Château Love!

The wig holders are masterpieces. And you pointed out to Stephanie (in a previous episode) about the tortoise faience having so many individual miniature paintings on the shell....what a bargain! When you entered the 18th century room, with the chimney and surround, I actually had goose bumps. You will never forget this day. A true master, Michel Boillot.

Thank you for sharing this most delightful day with us! I have loved and collected Faience, Majolica for years. In this modern world, of mass produced everything by machines, it’s so Important to keep the true Artisans and History of their origins and techniques. My heart longs for the old world artisanal traditions. I lived in France on and off for 7 yrs. My fiancé was from L’Hay Les Roses . I truly love your channel and your real and passionate personality. 🙏🏻

Could never explain how humbling this vlog is to me. This visit with such an artist, who was able and willing to spend his time with the four of you and allow all of us be part of the experience of watching a master at work. Words cannot capture how much this meant. I had to show this to my husband. He and I always loved jaunts like this and this one is more special than probably any we have had, and only wish w would have been with you, but at least this opportunity, all because of your willingness to let us share with you. What an amazing man with a beautiful and colourful history between his arms. The earliest examples of glazed porcelain dates back much earlier than the 9th century. In Baghdad museum there are amazing pieces of jars and plates from the Sumerian era 4000 BC. The most impressive glazed ceramic tiles from that region is the Ishtar Gate of Babylon from around 600 BC at the Pergamon Museum in Berlin. I am from Iraq living in uk, this history and heritage influenced my interior designs to no end. I painted a complete dinner set with scenes of Arabian nights from one thousands and one night. Also made big (tiles)murals of islamic miniatures. The most prominent colours in islamic tiles/porcelain are turquoise, blues, greens, the red came much later through Persia and turkey.

Tears in my eyes. These wonderful artistic trades of the highest order are being lost. I redid my 1940’s metal cabinet kitchen and found beautiful antique delft tiles that I could not afford. When I was younger I did ceramics and pottery so I found this very interesting. Pottery was may main love, the glazes and how they were formulated / mixed and colour technique was so fun for me. Some artists are so prophetic in their style and technique, which I find inspirational. That in itself makes each artist distinguishable. Michel Boillot certainly is all that is good in this medium, a true master of his craft. Thanks for sharing this Vivian!

What a treat, I hope he is teaching his craft to someone who will continue the artworks of hand painted porcelain. As a textile designer I really enjoyed that. It must be a challenge at first not knowing how each glaze will change after firing. Ps still hoping the shop will sell the MCM pottery to myself, or to you then myself. Your hand painted porcelain is beautiful, now yours won’t be fired how is it fixed? Yes a tutorial would be great.

Thank you! So, my porcelain bird plates are actually fired between each glaze at a very high temperature in a kiln. The “experimental tiles” that Anne and I made in the style of Delft though were made with a modern tile paint that is fired in a kitchen oven. We were very skeptical, but it wasn’t half bad! I’d be delighted to show both techniques. 😁🏰💖

Unfortunately there aren’t many Masters like him around anymore. I’m soo jealous of all you *artists.* I literally can’t draw a *circle!* I’ve tried for years, taking different art classes at a community center or wherever but I didn’t improve. I’m just so envious of painters specifically! When I see your videos Vivienne your beautiful big smile brightens my entire screen & I catch myself smiling back!😁 Hope all is well. Hugs, Doc🫶🏻

Hi Doc! Well, as you saw, I used a cup to make my circle, so be kind to yourself. Also, have you ever tried painting in abstract? It’s very freeing and no drawing skill needed. My sister enjoys pottery. Many of my porcelain friends trace their images, so there is no right or wrong way. Express yourself! Don’t give up! I believe in you! 😁🏰💖

In watching this video, I had a moment of creative clarity. As someone who has painted for 50 years, but not for the past five, both my studio, and the dust covered paintings there, mock the museless me. I suddenly realized lack an innocence of vision, and intent, with my work, and listening to Michel describe his art, and the life he shared with his wife, a wonderful painter, I felt such envy, and sadness. I need to start over, not easy at 67, and time is not kind. I'll be returning to this beautiful video, hopefully for inspiration. Thank-you, Vivienne.

Please start over! I, too, went several years without painting once. It was through porcelain that I returned to oil painting and just this week began experimenting with acrylics for the first time. Start with a tiny sketch, or journal about what you would like to create. Age is just a number. Michel is much, much older than you, so there are many years left. Don’t overthink it. If you have painted for 50 years, your talent hasn’t evaporated. In 30 years you may even find that a crazy blonde vlogger knocks on your door and asks to make a video about your work! I believe in you. 🥰🏰💖

@@ChateauLove Thanks so much for the words of encouragement. I switched from oils to acrylics decades ago. and now I'm thinking I might return to oils. Acrylics have many advantages, but can be tricky if you're used to oils. I mixed the pigments with gel medium and drying retarder, and felt it gave the paint a bit more of an oil feel, and lots of options for glazing. I love porcelain, and your work is beautiful. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your creations.

This was an astounding episode!! Kudos. What a wise, positive, and productive artist, and what a charmed life he’s led. Hard work, yes, but the joy he obviously has had. And, his property was a wonderful warren of periods and used. So fascinating and enjoyable.👍 It’s also very important because you’ve managed to document, preserve, and promote faience. It should never go out of production. Would like to see an instructional video from you, please, Vivienne. Just would like to see the steps, and would love it if it turned out to be something I can tackle. This is the kind of thing that another Country/culture has to offer. You and Simon need to take us exploring your little town’s antique stores, some day. The Village look absolutely beautiful. Can’t thank you enough for this fabulously informative and entertaining episode!🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
