EP 6: TOUR OF TOURS! CHATEAU BATHROOM HOW-TO/DIY BEGINS, VIEWERS HELP CHOOSE PLANTS, & ART!!

Ойын-сауық

@ChateauLove ** One of the existing bathrooms begins a radical transformation. Simon is a king on his throne. Vivienne & Simon finish planting the flower beds started in the last episode using lots of great viewer suggestions. Vivienne shares her art background & creates little gifts for her two favourite vlog supporters. A trip to historic Tours is a beautiful, enlightening and very funny affair with visits to the castle, the cathedral and the food market. A ridiculous picnic on the banks of the Loire ensues. No one can keep a straight face with Cheese of the Week. Tulips are in full bloom!
ABOUT US:
Hello! I’m Vivienne, the châtelaine of a small 19th century neo-Renaissance castle in the Loire Valley of France, which I share with my delightful (and wonderfully funny!) husband, Simon, our teenage daughter, pets, and -whenever possible- lovely friends and family.
This is not our first chateau! 20 years ago, we bought a much larger castle nearby, which we loved with all our hearts. However, nearly 18 years, many happy memories, countless renovations, and several small fortunes later, we made the very difficult, empty-nesting decision to downsize. With great luck and perseverance, we found our current petit château, which we are now decorating and updating with love, humour, comfort, and -of course- antiques and art!
We adore France and its many unique facets: its people, culture, landscapes, wine, food, art, and history. We also love being surrounded by châteaux, both public and private, which we can explore together! After 20 years here, we have learned many things about living in France, renovating châteaux, and appreciating the extraordinary riches surrounding us. We originally decided to make these videos as a way to share our lives with our loved ones worldwide during the pandemic lockdowns. However, we soon realised that many others are at home alone, and it is our privilege to open our home to you, our new friends. We hope you will join us on our adventures in this exceptional location, and we look forward to sharing a little Château Love!

Congratulations on another superb vlog, Vivienne and Simon, the tour of Tours was magic and a picnic by the Loire, just like our family what ever the time of year, a family picnic is always a given, when out exploring! Our mouths were watering showing walking around the market shopping for the picnic, AWSOME! Loving your attention to detail in your Reno’s too. Many thanks 🙏😊🇳🇿

Simon is DEFINITELY the Cheese of the Week, and not because he’s cute or tasty but because he’s soooo cheesy. 😁Although, unbeknownst to me for 27 years, he’s also a huge HAM in front of the camera, so I guess he’d make the perfect sandwich. 😂😂😂

Your paintings are wonderful! So flowing and calming! You are very talented. You and I have many things in common! I also painted porcelain, currently embroidering gifts for chair cushions for a friend. I often go to a Mediterranean cheese market but Redolphe Le Meunier is mouth-watering!!!! Your vlogs make me wants to move to France - right now!!! The cathedral makes me think of the Cathédrale de Reims. Thank you for the organ! A beautiful reminder of the 'facteur d'orgue' who work tirelessly to restore and maintain these beautiful instruments for centuries. Though I only took 9 lessons in my youth, I still play the organ and love the masters! The cathedral where I serve as organist and accompanist for cantors will never be as grand as this one in Tours and the organ that used to be in the choir loft was a Cassavant Frères which burned down with the cathedral in July 1968 is sorely missed. The oldest organ I had the privilege of stroking was in the UK, in a little county town church. It dated of the 11th century and only had part manuals. 'Twas a challenge and a dream to play it and hear the unmistakable sound of true pipes signing with glee and giving me shivers down my back with tears dribbling down my cheeks. What a memory to return 20 years later! Thank you Vivienne! Goat's bottom??? Wow Simon! What a picture! thank you for this vlog all! Truly enjoyed it!

Thank you, and how wonderful that you play the organ! My mother also works in a church as the choir director. She is a very gifted pianist but has many times told me how complicated the organ is. They are truly beautiful instruments, and incredible how each one is a unique work of art. I love seeing your messages. Thank you!! 💖🌸💖

I went to this market in 2019, the food was wonderful, it was so lovely to see all the lovely stalls again. I loved the delicatessen, I bought so many special things there. There was not much room in the car on the way home. It brought a tear to my eye to see it again. Just miss being able to travel. But as always we have to focus on the now and the fact that we are here and ok, not everyone has that. We also have lovely memories to live on until we can meet them again. Rust-O-Leum sprays and paints have a brush-on product to paint bathtubs. Maybe that would be an option for the Jacuzzi and sinks.....but I suspect you're already past that. Hahaha, Simon. A crown? My dad used to say the same! In fact, he 'throned' the bathroom as much as he could to 'escape' his noisy household when his 4 girls practiced musical instruments (1 violin, 1 cello, 1 piano and 1 harp and his wife - an alto) on Saturday mornings before chores. Love the primroses! Very special at this time of year. Their leaves will die back after flowering and 'disappear' until next Spring. Shrubs and perennials can take up to 3 to 6 years to fill out, so don't get discouraged, especially climbing roses! Those take forever it seems! African Daisies are wonderful as long as the weather is coolish and you fertilize them weekly with 1/4 recommended dose of fertilizer - or simply add slow-release fertilizer pellets (not sure if they are available in France). They have become mainstays where I live in Canada for summer popping color in baskets. They may 'creep' a little though it depends on the variety you have. They deadhead themselves (self-cleaning bloomers) which simplifies your daily tasks, but be aware that they may not open on overcast days.

Actually, when we arrived many years ago, Simon spoke schoolboy French & I spoke elementary Spanish (which was mildly helpful for understanding Latin-root conjugations, but not much else). Our daughter is fully bilingual and also speaks Spanish, so she’s the best one to have around in a pinch. As they say, just making the effort has been enormously helpful in learning the language and integrating. New episode coming soon! 💖🌸💖

Yet another beautifully filmed vlog! I love Simon’s Throne ha ha! It was interesting to hear your background, Vivienne - I also studied Psychology but didn’t use it as a profession - I had a career in creating tv/radio advertising but came full circle and retrained as a Counsellor/Psychotherapist! I also come from a very musical family but my dearest brother, John Scott, was an international organist and choir director - he was Director of Music at St Paul’s Cathedral for over a decade and played for Charles and Diana’s wedding. Latterly he was at St Thomas on Fifth Avenue New York but very unexpectedly passed away after an extensive recital tour of a pulmonary embolism at 59 years. It was a huge shock and I miss him terribly. Your visit to the Cathedral of Tours brought back memories as I believe he did a recital there. Looking forward to your next vlog and the bathroom makeover! Judi

Hello Judi, I am really touched by your comment, and my mother also saw it and was very moved. She is the music director of a church, so you and I have an understanding of the exceptional talent and dedication for such roles in life. I am truly sorry for the loss of your brother, as he was clearly extraordinary. St. Paul’s Cathedral...oh my. I am also inspired by your history with Psychology, as I often think of revisiting it in some capacity. It’s good to know there is hope for later-in-life career transitions! Thank you for this lovely message. 💖🌸💖

@@ChateauLove Hi Vivienne, Thank you so much for your reply - it meant a great deal to me and your mother will certainly know how dedicated one has to be to do that job. My brother John was certainly that and at least he has left his legacy to music via his cd’s etc. Yes, you can go back to psychology in later life - but it does help us in our daily life too, as I know you already know! Love to your family. Judi

Your tulips remind me of my father. He loved red tulips and every fall planted his 'divisions' collected every 2nd spring to have an amazing display of 'Red Emperor' large Darwin tulips on either side of the front steps. The tulip world has tulips that bloom from the time primroses sneak out of the ground to bloom until early summer (called late Spring for tulips) 'Fosteriana' are the earliest - they are also the shortest stemmed ones. The Double Early ones have a 'dahlia-like' appearance except their petals are pointed at their tips - I liken them to a carnation inside an opened tulip. The Darwin tulips have long, stately and strong stems with large, often 3" tall petals and come in a range of solid colors from pale pastels to dark, obsidian violet. 'Greigii' tulips on the other hand are specialty tulips that bloom in mid-spring as they are often (in layman's terms) called 'cluster tulips' because they have more than one flower per stem. They are also a 'specialty' tulip as their leaves are at times speckled with burgundy splotches or dots, variegated cream, brown or lighter green stripes! The Triumph type have bi-colored petals that attract many a collector! They also bloom in mid-spring. They stand 18 to 20 inches high! 'Viridiflora' varieties are often identified as the 'green' tulips as they display streaks or 'green' stripes on each petal. They bloom mid-to-late spring, come in different bold, eye-catching colors and grow 18 inches tall. 'Parrot' tulips are called this because they have a multitude of bushy petals all placed in a circular fashion at the center of the tulips. Compared to the 'Double Early' tulips that have pointed petals, the parrot flower has rounded, 'frilled' petal edges, like you'd have on a dress hem or gather of lace around a collar. The colors often give the effect of a classic watercolor painting and each flower differs from the other, even though they come in a set. Compared to the Darwins, they are a 'free as a bird' type of flower. I often compare them to Russian Icing tips because they have the same type of edge you get when you lift up your piping bag too soon. And finally the 'Fringed', 'Lily-Flowered', 'Double' and 'Single' late tulips. The fringed and lily flowered are self-explanatory. They stand very tall at 22 inches. When the lily-flowered opens its tight buds, it really can be mistaken for a lily! The double late has a stumpy, busy bloom but looks like a large rose head above dark green, mat and lanced foliage. 'Angelique' is one of the oldest varieties of this type and is light fuchsia pink stripes on pure white round, short petals. From far you think you're looking at a rose bed in bloom! And finally the Single Late tulips grow to 22-24 inches high, have huge flower heads that measure at least 3.25 inches, and come in a variety of colors that can make one salivate for hours! Many of them have French names such as 'Dordogne', she's apricot peach; 'Sauternes' is light pink with a flush of white at the bottom; 'La Courtine' has canary yellow petals with a single thin red line at the center of each petal. And who can resist the rare color combination of 'Dordogne' with 'Queen of Night's dark purple, almost black, petals?

I bought many mixed tulips last autumn, without any real knowledge of their varieties. This Spring was a revelation with all of the different sizes and colours! I’m going to print your comment to go outside and compare. Some of my favourites coming out now look almost like peonies, and the biggest surprise has been the scent...like honeysuckle. How did I live so long without tulips in my gardens? Thank you!!! 💖🌸💖

My grandmother was Rosellen Rebecca. In her 60’s she went to Detroit and got her birth certificate and found out her legal name was Rosa Rebecca. Her father always called her Rose Ellen, and since her mother died when she was young she just thought that was her name. So she legally changed her name to Rosellen, and I used it for my oldest daughters middle name. Oh, and I love your art, from a fellow artist!

First of all, I will talk about who in my family is named after a flower and that would be my dear Aunty Iris who just turned 95 and is just as sharp as ever!! Aunty Iris is very much like a mother to me as my mother died many years ago. In every new garden I have I always plant Irises in Aunty Iris's honour. My husband Bill and I have just moved to Victoria, B.C. Canada and are creating a new garden. I have yet to find just the perfect Iris to plant. Thank you for another lovely video.
