My name is Michael Petherick and I live with my family at Chateau de la Basmaignee in north west France.
My brother and his fiancé bought this building with some inheritance money three years ago and we are slowly restoring it to live in, and run as a business.
It’s always a financial struggle to keep the place going and we have to work hard to keep our heads above water, but we love it and wouldn’t have It any other way.
When they knew that they were buying the château, my brother asked me if I would like to move over and take part in their new adventure... so I packed my bags, gave up my life in England and moved here to help bring this place back to life.
We do all the renovations ourselves including construction, decorating and collecting antique furniture that we buy cheaply to restore. Our goal is to fill the château with beauty and life as it once was.
I have a passion for history, art and all things old.
These videos are a series of stories about my life and experiences living in a French castle.
We film and edit everything ourselves.
I’ll be showing all aspects of life here, from renovation and DIY, to crafts and baking, art, daily life and a bit of fun thrown in for good measure. There’s much more to see and our journey is still just beginning.

Yes, in Italy we call it ragù. For a good ragù we need at least 3 hours 😁
thank you very much for always remembering to add the conversion. also the vinegar is what breaks down the meat because it's an acid. that looks beautiful

Lovely as usual. On a side note, Knorr’s and most other cubed stock contain immense amounts of MSG. Thus the enhanced flavor you taste.

@@druidsgardenandkitchen Interesting. I'm from the Tucson, Arizona, USA area. Here's a typical American lasagna recipe: Ingredients 12 lasagna noodles uncooked 4 cups mozzarella cheese shredded and divided 1/2 cup parmesan cheese shredded and divided Tomato Sauce 1/2 pound lean ground beef 1/2 pound Italian sausage 1 onion diced 2 cloves garlic minced 24 ounces pasta sauce 2 tablespoons tomato paste 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning Cheese Layer 2 cups ricotta cheese 1/4 cup fresh parsley chopped 1 egg beaten Instructions Heat oven to 350°F. Cook pasta al dente according to package directions. Rinse under cold water and set aside. Brown beef, sausage, onion and garlic over medium high heat until no pink remains. Drain any fat. Stir in pasta sauce, tomato paste, Italian seasoning. Simmer 5 minutes. Combine 1-1/2 cups mozzarella, ricotta, 1/4 cup parmesan cheese, parsley and egg. Add 1 cup meat sauce to a 9x13 pan. Top with 3 lasagna noodles. Layer with 1/3 of the cheese mixture and 1 cup of meat sauce. Repeat finishing with noodles topped with sauce. Cover with foil and bake 45 minutes. Uncover, add cheese and bake an additional 15 minutes or until browned and bubbly. Broil 2-3 minutes if desired. Rest 10-15 minutes before cutting.

Sally Stites so beef mince is the same as ground beef. I do sometimes add chopped bacon, pork mince or sausage meat to a raging. We can buy pasta sauce but I prefer homemade personally. I’ve seen that way of making a white sauce but Michael making a bechamel is the traditional way of making a white sauce in Europe. Italian seasoning has more flavours than I would use but looks good!
Stephanie is such a lovely person.

Love that we get to see you guys hanging out! As you were making the lasagna my mouth was watering. Also I bet the various basils that Stephanie bought can be turned into some yummy homemade ice cream by infusing the milk and cream with them. 😋
I could smell the huge, gorgeous bowl of roses on the table all the way here in Texas! The Spode teacups are like soup bowls with handles and I love them! I think I’m going to have to give Michael’s lasagna recipe a go! Thanks for showing us, Michael!
That was quite an exquisite creation. I am not sure just calling it lasagne does it justice!!! We need to add something to youtube that allows us to smell this creation. Bet it was divine. So funny to find "mummy" out in the garden. She is truly amazing. So glad the extra ingredient was in the greenhouse! Bet it was hard for Stephanie to get any cards done! Wonder if they picked up the scent of the dinner! Maybe Dan deserves some of the leftovers for working in the rain too! Seems like the perfect use of a rainy day.

My mouth is watering.
Stephanie I love your wall plate rack! Absolutely gorgeous ❤️ Michael, Great job on the lasagna. You two are great together! He's gone mad!!! Lol
If you preheat in Fahrenheit, it would be the "typical" 350 F. (A LOT of things are baked at 350 F. in the U.S.) REALLY enjoyed this video! I am quite jealous of your friend's herb gardens and green house. Hmmm...usually when you assemble Lasagna, you spread a touch of the sauce on the bottom before beginning to add the layers to keep things from sticking. LOL...would have loved to have seen it out of the dish...usually when your lasagna is done, it's important to allow it to "rest", so that the ingredients and flavors can merge and settle before cutting into it. (You are a wonderful cook Michael...I love how adventurous you are...most men are afraid to just jump in and experiment! ) I'm enjoying your visit with your friends.
Michael I learnt so much watching you cook lasagna, I decided to try it and everyone was impressed so thank you I never though I could improve on the way I’ve been doing for years , but hey you can learn something new every day . Love you both , love your cooking keep up the good work xx🍾🥂
