Another Chateau Life - Doing It Ourselves

In todays video I pay a visit to a friends Chateau to lend a helping hand with a DIY project, announce some exciting news, reveal the finished grand staircase and find some hidden treasures in the Chateau forest.

My name is Michael Petherick and I live with my family at Chateau de la Basmaignee in north west France.
My brother and his fiancé bought this building with some inheritance money three years ago and we are slowly restoring it to live in, and run as a business.
It’s always a financial struggle to keep the place going and we have to work hard to keep our heads above water, but we love it and wouldn’t have It any other way.
When they knew that they were buying the château, my brother asked me if I would like to move over and take part in their new adventure... so I packed my bags, gave up my life in England and moved here to help bring this place back to life.
We do all the renovations ourselves including construction, decorating and collecting antique furniture that we buy cheaply to restore. Our goal is to fill the château with beauty and life as it once was.
I have a passion for history, art and all things old.
These videos are a series of stories about my life and experiences living in a French castle.
We film and edit everything ourselves.
I’ll be showing all aspects of life here, from renovation and DIY, to crafts and baking, art, daily life and a bit of fun thrown in for good measure. There’s much more to see and our journey is still just beginning.

The blue flowering tree is called “Ceanothus” - I asked about it two years ago as it grew all over the town i was living in and I wanted to find one to plant in my own garden. There is a variety called “Zanzibar” which has variegated leaves too so its paler green and blue looking. Xx

Us archaeologists would call your “trash heap” a midden! We get very excited to find them on dig sites, as they have the most telltale artifacts about daily life and are usually fairly chronological since it’s always dumped in the same place over many years. Imagine if this had been a dumping ground for a century or more! Tell visitors it’s a “feature of archaeological significance” ;)

The beech trees that fell look beautiful and straight, and they might make superb timber for construction for your cottage, and for flooring (beech is a beautiful hardwood very commonly used for construction and flooring in Europe). You might be able to get them processed in a local saw mill, cured, and able to use for more than just firewood.

@@lianegordon971 I've got some beech floors and I'd trade them for oak in a hearbeat! The main disadvantage of beech is that it shrinks and expands a lot as humidity and temperature change, much more than other species of timber. I've heard old carpenters quoted "The only place for beech is in the fire!". In the past 25 years or so it's become a common species for veneers and engineered floors because thin layers don't change that much but for solid timber floors beech is quite problematic.

Michael, your videography is so much more than what you film. For me, it brought back to mind the summer I spent in the UK, near Chelmsford during the 100th anniversary of World Scouting. Every morning I'd be up at 5 am to take a shower (cold, and barely a thin stream of water....), by 545 I was in the 6,000 person cafeteria with its 8 serving counters then walking through woods to Gate 1 to board a coach along with 47 scouts from 3 to 4 different countries on our way to help restore the Victorian Kitchen Garden of Bridge End Gardens. These woods brought tears to my eyes and returned the emotions of walking those treks in the woods morning and after a 10-hr day in the gardens and on the coaches that gave me time to relax, smell the well-rotted leaves crackling underfoot, watch the play of light across strands of ivies clambering over downed trunks and climbing trees. The fronds of Royal Fern brushing like the wings of fairies on my legs and the song of birds I didn't know of in my home country of Canada. This vlog and its moving music has brought those precious memories of my 50th year of life and where the many scouts I met who have become brothers and sisters in 2007 back to me. Thank you.

As someone who is owned by a silver long-haired Norwegian Forest cat, I remove the cat hair from my red velvet drapes using the fabric brush roller attachment on a vacuum with a hose extension, then go back over what was missed with sticky-tape lint rollers. A fun chore regardless. I just wish there was a market for cat hair. We'd all be rich. Have not read all the comments below, but have you considered doing donor signage for those helping fund your restorations? Names carved into bricks, or small brass signage with donor names is always a lovely idea to consider for your patrons. This could open up a whole world of donation levels and even draw guests to stay on holidays with the value add to see their names and what their help built. Who doesn't like to see their names memorialized into perpetuity? Beautiful legacy making.

My cat has crazy crazy hair and lots of shedding. When the hair is on fabric if you take a rubber glove just a disposable latex glove and roll it across the fabric (obviously put the glove on your hand😁) The hair will start to collect together as you rub your hand over the fabric. This makes for easy removal. Just a quick tip from the US 🇺🇸 😉❤

The final part filmed in the woods reminded me of a poem I wrote some years ago. *** Dewdrops on branches Glisten in the light of dawn. The sense of pure love, The joy of being alive. Can you feel the air? The fairies were here tonight. Bare feet on soft moss, Divine sensation of self. Pure light in your heart, Serenity in your mind. *** Love the videos and I'm so happy you have got funds to start with the renovation of the cottage now. I'm sure it will be absolutely wonderful.

Thrilled to watch this journey on the gardener's cottage. You are the man for this, and no one else would be able to do it for so low a cost. It is because of your artistry and using reclaimed materials. It will be beautiful. I hope that you leave the "Go Fund Me" up for a while, because I hope to contribute in a month or so.

I do too, and I let them play so Michael gets the income... But for me today, KZread put in a pair of commercials in every few minutes. It was a lot more than I'd seen previously, and while I understand that it helps and I'm happy to help, the spacing of them was disruptive... Michael does such a super job composing these. The music and sweeping images are so relaxing and inspiring, and then bam there's an ad. I don't know if channels have control over when or how long, or the frequency... Otherwise, this was beautiful and I'm so happy to hear about the cottage work starting now! Yay!

🕯Yes! A fitting description of that stunning staircase. Michael did a gorgeous job restoring it to it's former glory! 🎥 Also great B-roll montage.👏👏👏 💛 Loved the elegant new exterior signage for the Chateau too.🏆Brilliant job! Perfect re-use for an old table top too. (Headboards work too. In the States, they are plentiful. Easy to find a wooden twin size as cheap as $10. Could be a free curbside find too. Make good mudroom hat & coat racks too.) Can't wait to see it hung up in it's resting place. 😉

Ceanothus. It is also called "Californian" something or other, because grows on the Pacific coast in USA. Most types flower on growths made the previous years, so should be pruned immediately after flowering is over. Best to look it up on the internet to correctly identify and check which type it is. It is borderline hardy, so can be a bit difficult. I grew a beautiful one against a wall, vigorous and gorgeous for a few years and then just died, I don't think I pruned it enough or at the right time. They do need the right attention. Those look so lovely outside your house, such a wonderful colour. I am very envious!

Sally Gardiner that happened to me too with the ceanothus in our garden. I’ve always loved this plant. I will take note of the pruning though as I don’t remember pruning mine at all. As our garden centres are now open I will find a place for one and plant it. Thanks.

Because of yours and and Stephanie's videos I am seriously considering to buy an old Villa somewhere in the Tuscan hills. I have been living in Italy for over 7 years and just like France, this country has many old buildings that need some love in order to return to their previous glory. I'm so, so, so happy for you Michael! It's very lovely, that you'll be able to restore gardeners cottage so soon! I understand the desire greatly, as I also would like to take simular task on myself in the future. In Poland there are either old stone-wooden buildings, or brick ones, or rather these are the most common ones. I'm always very interested in them, but as I'm only 17, and i'm living in 30 sqare meters flat in a city, there's not much i can do. Hopefully in future there'll still be some opportunities like that, land here is getting rather expensive and I don't preditct a big salary for myself, haha! Greetings! I adore your vlog!
