Prius with water in your spare tire well? Easy Fix

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

If your 2nd gen Prius is collecting water in the spare tire well, take a look at your seam sealer where the roof meets the hatch sheet metal. Chances are there is a crack and that's where the water is coming through.
This is also a possible fix for the red triangle in some cases

We got the red triangle of death but no codes came up when checked. Turns out water in the trunk on the electrical wires was the problem! Thank you for posting this video on where to check for leaks to correct this!

THANK YOU - THANK YOU We've been looking for the source of the leak for a year now and not making any progress. We never thought to look UNDER those trim covers. Sure enough....cracks on both sides. I very much appreciate you taking the time to do this video!! (I just wish I'd searched for this sooner...)👍

If you look along the outside panels in the storage cubby and the battery area , your see 4 screws, or holes that look like there should be screws in them. The are attached to the plastic trim piece that the bumper cover connects to. Most older cars start to get a gap where the bumper cover meets the rear fender. Water will run in those holes if they work lose from the panel and bumper vibration, sometimes you can see the white drip lines from the water coming in. You can rtv the screws and mounting holes from the inside but the best repair is to remove the bumper covers, remove the plastic mount and then check the seals and rtv all of them. If you are going to do this you might as well get replacement plastic brackets , then your car will be dry and the bumper cover lines up correctly.

I had a problem with my hatch latch actuator. When the temperature dropped below freezing, the hatch wouldn't open. When it warmed above freezing, it would work. So i figured that the actuator must have water in it. It sure did. When I pulled it out, it was dripping. I had quite a bit of water in my spare tire well. I'm not sure how it got into my actuator. Condensation? I replaced the actuator and drained the water. I will do the silicone sealing when it warms up.

With all the work you have put into your Prius, are you still a satisfied owner? In my 08, I still think it is the best 'used' car I've ever owned, even though it needed quite a bit of TLC over the last 18 months. Thanks for posting your experiences here.

Absolutely, it's one of the best used cars I've ever owned. It does help that I can do all the work on it myself, if I had to take it to a shop or the dealership to have the hybrid battery replaced, or to chance the thermostat, or change out the 12v battery it might be a different story. But since I knew I could do the work and I picked up the prius initially as a fixer upper, it's all turned out pretty well.

I think the Prius is the best. I have owned many and sold the last one to my mom who complains she can't take it apart like her 90s honda civics hahaha. Well, she also complained that her hondas were janky and dangerous so now that she's in a tank she's much safer. When she complains I have only great words to defend the car. She is upset she can't change the brakes herself (calls it an expensive fancy lifestyle car) and that the engine light won't turn off (I got an update on a recall thing and she hasn't taken it in to fix it yet) and it sucks she can't just unplug it because there are batteries and the whole car runs on a computer, lol. I told her that the Prius is basically the basis of every car on the road today and she's lucky to have such a reliable vehicle that can be repaired and parts replaced in the snap of a finger and it'll never break down on her. Personally, I find the Prius less intimidating to work on than a chevy truck because so much depends on every tiny part in an older gasoline vehicle and I can pop parts out of the prius and have them replaced for next to nothing. Honestly, my mom is having more issues now with it than I ever did in the 5 years I had mine ('10, second owner. my mom is the 3rd owner), I did hit rubber on the freeway when I borrowed but she also let it run over 10 000 without an oil change so that's karma for ya. XD

I Have 2005 Gen 2 Toyota Prius & My Rear Tail Lights Are Letting Water Seep In At The Top Of The Lights On The Inner Side Black Plastic Strip Next To The Boot Rubber Seal, & My Lights Get Steamed Up & Full Of Water To & I Think This Is Where The Water Comes Into The Rear Boot Floor Of All Gen 2 Toyota Prius's & I Do Not Think That Water Comes In Through Cracks In The Welds Of The Rear Sides Of The Car, That Welding Is Solid & I Don't See Them Separating, This Is Unheard Of & Virtually Impossible.

I took mine to the dealer to fix the "red Triangle" code. They gave it back to me after drying the battery, but the code was still happening.....but only for one day. Then it started working fine. THEN....I went to Oregon and the car was rained on again, and the Red Triangle was back, but just for a day. So I think the drying is the key, whether doing it professionally or just letting time do its work. I bought a code reading device so I can reset if needed.

disconnect the battery, then reconnect, if a battery terminal corrosion issue, clean the neg terminal. The disconnect resets the red triangle of death. Also a plug removable from undercar for the hole below the battery.

Your water pump might be going bad, it’s in the bottom front right under the hood. Depending on how many miles you have. Or it could be a bad HV harness or ECU.
