I use to be a correctional officer at a county prison work camp and I will saying paying the "guards" as you call them would make a world of difference. Where I worked at we were a lot more patient with inmates and treated them a lot more humane than state prisons. The biggest difference was that we got paid almost double what state correctional officers made, so we basically got paid enough to be nice while state correctional officers didn't make much more than minimum wage in my state and yet expected to have the patience and professionalism of a saint. Also if they paid more they could expect that kind of professionalisn and patience instead of hiring young kids fresh out of high school who's first time being away from their parents for more than a weekend is being at the correctional academy.

Larry, you are so right. "Programs" that are supposed to assist with rehab back into society fail the incarcerated and the families. DOC needs overhauled in a very bad way.

I like the CONCEPT of Unicor... the problem is its being implemented improperly. What they SHOULD be doing in my opinion: Pay the inmates working there the exact same as what someone on the outside would be making, then charge them the proper taxes, food/rent etc and let them keep the rest in an account to either save or spend.. This will teach them life skills that a lot of them dont have, while also giving them a sense of accomplishment.

I believe that we need to end the war on drugs. It seems no one has learned from prohibition. Making things that people want illegal will just make people want it more and take more risks to get it and the demand leads to the creation of gangs and the mafia.

I think regulating and taxing the drugs similar to how cannabis is handled can be a decent step in a better direction; the pharmaceutical industry has magnitudes higher production capability than the cartels, mafia and independents combined. This in turn would effectively defund organized crime and end the war on drugs.

You would think they would have learned from the war on alcohol. We all know how bad that was. How they tried banning it completely and how much of a disaster that caused to the country. They ended that war and need to the same with drugs. The U.S. needs to do what Switzerland has done with its decriminalization of drugs

Maybe America needs an independent inspectorate of prisons as we have in the UK. For England and Wales HM Prison Inspectorate of Prisons inspects prisons and makes reports which are published. Not that our prisons are much good. That said we have shorter sentences, no death penalty and time off fit good behaviour.

You have to remember a lot of the American criminal justice system is administered at the state level. In the case of Texas the Department of Criminal Justice is in charge of managing the state prisons and enforcing standards for both county jails and state prisons. But that means at the state level there are 50 different state level prison inspections and it can vary just on the size of the state alone.

I agree with you on rehabilitation and the psychological healing that needs to be done with inmates. They need to learn mindfulness and helping other people, learn impulse control, patience, and ability to focuse on tasks. Even sociopaths and psychopaths can learn to help people and have effective empathy it just takes time, therapy, and hard work wich is most needed. On a side note art and pets do wonders for anyone especially if they are lonely. Thats my two sense comming from someone who has spent a week and a half in the mental hospital for anxietty severe depression and psycosis.

Man, the labor is so complicated, I think it's more of a thing than you know. Most of our production sewing is in prisons now. I only learned it because I used to work in sewing factories, and we all wondered where our jobs went so I looked it up. Besides over seas...our military gear is all contracted to prison labor. Furniture companies have contracts with prisons. Supposedly Georgia doesn't have for profit prisons, but all their prisoners are required to work unless they have a medical release. They work as farm labor, production labor, or at food processing. This is all convict leasing. At Silverdale they lease prisoners to the chicken processing plant.

Great ideas! This is a topic few are talking about, but more should. I haven't been arrested, yet my brother, business partner and best friend at the time all have served time for separate crimes. My friend did 4 years at a state prison and had a very difficult time reintegrating and after two years being out he hung himself. My brother was only at a local jail for a year, yet was for position and intent to distribute of weed. With that on his record at 28 after having a college degree prior, he too struggled to get back on his feet with the most minor of offensiveness. He is doing much better now but it was a long hard road for him. My business partner spent 5 years in a federal prison for growing and selling weed with no weapons nor priors on his record. It took him over 10 years to be the person he is today and still struggles with social interactions. We all need to see prison reform at all levels. Not only for the ones we love, but to better our society and change our culture for the better.

I agree with what youre saying. Reformed prisoners like yourself are crucial in making impactful changes. A lot of facilities are out dated and busted. No State or Prison has ever or will ever rehabilitate an inmate. The inmate him self must decide to turn his or her life around Good prison behavior needs to be demonstrated before an inmate qualifies for a “program “. Lastly there are inmates that are beyond redemption.

Absolutely yes but the prisons could still do a better job. If they had more resources and more opportunities then maybe more people would make the right choice. If you have someone that’s in prison and feels like the system is no help then what do they care. But if they knew that their was resources or programs that could help them then they could very well make that choice.

Larry, I totally agree with you 100 no, 1000%. I have always cared about the prison system, reentry rehabilitation counseling. I think that we need to offer or require in convicts inmates whatever to undergo intense counseling throughout their entire bid I feel that definitely the food needs to be changed, I like your idea of the you know giving the warden incentives to rehabilitate instead of save money cut corners cut cost by just sticking it to the prisoner. It’s not right you need to get rid of the abuse in the prison. I think you’ve got some fantastic ideas and I’m behind you 100% and, you should have a job in the bureau of prisons because I know for a fact that you would change everything for the better and you’re the guy for the job

  • @proceduralnodes3d

You have some excellent ideas presented here….I hope someone with authority sees it. In terms of re-integration what about a separate wing for people right before release that is set up more like the outside where they can navigate having this sensory overload as a group along with appropriate counselors. Also, in terms of education, today so much of that online and what’s being used is computer skills so they need some way to address inmates having computer access for that purpose.

One thing to consider for the regulate and tax route, that still means enforcement which still means police. Except now it means people will likely get arrested/ticketed for things like selling without a permit or underage possession. Heck the ATF still goes after moonshiners today.

Very informative (you're always interesting). I wonder what the deal is with the limited number of cameras. I agree, it seems like there should be a higher coverage of cameras. Maybe inmates are given some level of trust without cameras. Building trust seems like a difficult thing, maybe even superstitious. Either someone is trustworthy or not, I would say when faced with such superstitions. It's possibly superstitious because it's like a gamblers fallacy: if someone pays out, as trustworthy, then they will again (or so the trust builder would say). This is why the underlying causes of crime and lines of thinking of the convicted need to be determined and solved because we are all trustworthy, but circumstances can sometimes make one break laws. Back to the cameras though. If they are part of trust building, maybe there should be some wings (or cell blocks) with cameras and some with less.

As a fellow libertarian, I love most of Larry’s opinions. End the War on Drugs, but I do still have to come around on some of his other opinions. The Constitutional amendments do provide for a lower salary for prisoners, I don’t know if that’s such a bad thing considering the prison economy. Give them a minimum of $7.25/hr, they’ll be making tons of money every month compared to the commissary prices. If you give them minimum, those prices will skyrocket.

Agreed! Prisons need some kind of independent agency or department that's responsible for carrying out random audits to ensure inmates are being treated humanely. In person, thorough inspections from someone who doesn't have an incentive to try and hide the failings of the BOP and DOC.

Hello I just stumbled upon this on KZread. Any form of prison is no fun. Certainly not if you have a mental problem. I have suffered from psychosis since I was a child. Something I just can't do anything about. There's always a terrible misconception that this is always because of drug use, I've never touched that stuff in my entire life. During a severe psychosis (this always happens unexpectedly or in a stressful situation), I stabbed someone five times. I heard this afterwards, when I had come out of the psychosis. This often takes a few weeks to months. Lose complete grip on reality. Then you wake up in a maximum security prison and with no grip on reality this is very difficult and frightening. You have to survive between other inmates and gangs, I was an easy target. A lot of people say, it's your own fault, you shouldn't have stabbed someone. In a clear mental state I would never do something like that, when you lose your grip on reality you no longer know what you are doing. There was a waiting list at the mental hospital, so I was sent to a regular prison first. After a month I was transferred to a special prison (mental hospital). I was imprisoned from 16 years to 30 years. Released under strict supervision. Luckily the person survived. I've talked to this person several times now,

You said it Larry, that’s something they NEVER TALK ABOUT. People on the outside think they are better than everyone and can’t figure out why people are institutionalized. 1500 choices a day odds all good for people institutionalized OUTSIDE OF PRISON. They should spend 3 years inside before they should be allowed to talk

As a CO I disagree with a lot of what you advocate. What I do say is put these politicians in a CO uniform and have them work a whole week. They would see how we are nor just guards but also therapists EMTs and firemen. As far as rehabilitation? It's always there to be taken advantage of. My step dad and 2 of my brothers were incarcerated for crimes they were guilty of and when they finally decided to turn around they did

this morning, I became aware of, then wholly infuriated by the channel ‘tweaker hunters’ and its condescending bootlicking host… this self-righteous ‘recovered addict’ makes a fortune “exposing the drug situation” - meaning he gives away his cheap schwag to homeless addicts on the street, then conducts “interviews” in which he demeans their humanity and ridicules their desperate conditions; all culminating in a curated spectacle of exploitation for the laughter of his audience …and of course the generation of ad revenue. then I watched this video… which helped me calm down, and I am very grateful for that. it’s good to know there are intelligent people who actually understand what is happening with the broken criminal justice system in this country, and still have hope to see it improved. basically, you made a sub… thanks for the oasis of sanity.

I have never been in jail or prison. However, I have loved one who was incarcerated for several years. During that time he watched a man get stabbed in the neck and bleed out and die. The CO'S stood around the corner and watched and after the man died " found " him. He watched several suicides and many attempted suicides. He said needles and drugs are rampant in there. He now is getting therapy for PTSD. My 1st suggestion would be to stop the violence. Also, we pay a lot of taxes for the prisons so fix the leeky roof and get rid of the black mold oozing from the walls & pipes.
