The prisoners' patrol is a painting made by Van Gogh in February 1890 when he was interned in the asylum of Saint Remy, which is about 20 km from Arles in Provence.
The painter spent a long time in Saint Remy. Following a serious nervous breakdown on May 8, 1889, Van Gogh voluntarily entered the psychiatric hospital called Saint-Paul-de-Mausole which was an ancient monastery. Here he remained for a whole year until May 16, 1890.
Van Gogh lived in a small room with a barred window overlooking the hospital garden; beyond the garden he could see the fields and finally the Alpilles, the last chain of the French Alps. The Dutchman had another room available that he had used as a studio but he could paint in the open air both in the garden but also outside even if accompanied by a supervisor.
Van Gogh in the past year in Saint Remy created about 150 paintings, including some of his most famous such as the starry night kept at the MOMA in NY whose inspiration came just looking at the sky from a hospital window.
During his hospitalization, correspondence with his beloved brother Theo remained constant and Vincent also had some prints of painters he loved sent, including one by Gustav Dorè who inspired the painting treated in this video.
Van Gogh had already copied Rembrandt, Millet, Daumier and Delacroix. This operation represented for the painter a way to carry tradition into the present, above all through the decisive use of color.
These are almost always copies that are very faithful to the original. This is interesting because the conception, the work, the design and the composition belong from time to time to Dorè, Delacroix, Millet, but the use and the drafting of the color instead are 100% by Van Gogh. The result is often amazing and this gives us a dimension of the expressive power that color had reached in the last extreme phase of the painter.
