Prison Style Stabbing

The answer to defending a prison style stabbing attack is probably simpler than you think.

As a Correctional Officer I’ve broken up fights and many assaults with weapons. Most standings happened before o could get to them and a lot happened and it wasn’t seen until it was over. Almost all will be over by the time anyone sees it. I’ve stopped some though when the one being attacked tried running away and the attacker chased him. Clearly if one knows what they are doing, the victim will be stabbed multiple times. That being said knowing “something “ like this can be the difference in being stabbed 4 or 5 times and being stabbed 20+ times. If I achieve arm control as you did I’d want to turn the same way but intend on breaking the arm at the elbow. Nothing is ever guaranteed so knowing as much as possible about defending an attack is better than not. I appreciate you doing this and actually doing it more realistically than most. At Prison training we don’t quite drill these kinds of attacks. Most are similar to Aikido, the swinging the knife, over head stab ect. Shit that in there just isn’t likely at all. So appreciate the more realistic approach 👊🏼✊🏼

A simple hand pass of the knife to the empty hand and that changes the whole play book , and during sewing machine style knife attacks , most attackers grab hold of your clothes to limit your movement and to increase the force of the stabs and it happens so rapidly youd be lucky to realize what ms happening before you try to block .Pre emptives are key to dealing with knife attack , recognizing the threat before it gets to the point of no return

Hi Ryan, you did good addressing this from your point of view. I want to feed you some knowledge to help you better prepare people that may get locked up and find themselves in this scenario. 1. You NEVER run in prison, you MUST face it. 2. Most attacks are by multiple attackers. (Tricks) One guy presents weapon from front to gain your attention while two guys come from your rear once you enter fight/flight. (Beware of tunnel vision) 3. Space is limited and most likely the attack will not happen in yard. 4. Inside the cell, the hard metal objects surrounding you should be used to your advantage, a fast technique I used was thrusting attackers head into wall or shelf right by front of most modern cells. If you know the fight is going to happen or you will be attacked, fight out in the open, the guards will see it and this could potentially save you from suffering mortal wounds.

continuing from where you left off Sugar Bear (blind spots on the yard)...and it happens fast. If you are the target of a hit the people actually stabbing you are coming from everywhere, and then handing off to someone who will dump the weapon. I saw a guy take literally three guys fast stabbing him in his kidneys, chest, and neck, and before he hit the ground, they had handed them off and the weapons went over the fence. The CO's didn't even know it had happened until he slumped at the gate.

Ryan, your opening starts with a false premise, as you obviously have never been to prison. Almost anything, like using up the last toilet paper or ripping a magazine page - is a transgression that could get you stabbed. It is NOT that there has to be a good reason. These are different people that think differently. Most have no build up or escalation to violence. It's "Off", then it's "On". And stabbing someone can be more status, or even something to do in one very boring year of the 100+ on your sentence.

The best training is psychological / situational awareness on how to deal with inmates . The hardest skill in working on the prison is not the inmates but the other staff.

If you show any signs of fear. Those killers will look for any tells on you to judge our your reactions. Your eyes they will stare at to see if your how dilated the are. Such little things like that they draw conclusion on you. Just be you. Don't show fear ever! But never disrespect these guys too. Once you have the respect of the cons and they know that you are just a family man trying to feed your family they generally don't mess with you. Be a "good cop" if you will and know that the career choice you are heading for is one of the toughest job and most under appreciated jobs out there. Like I said stick to the good cop role. You never want to get caught up in bringing anything in for t he inmates that's a dangerous road to go down even if the money is good. If you get called out sometimes you handle that shit. NO martial arts instructor worth their salt, is going to 'teach you knife defenses' on the FIRST DAY... just as no instructor pilot, is going to teach a student pilot how to properly execute an instrument landing approach on their very first lesson. EVERYTHING that man said, in this video, is ABSOLUTELY CORRECT. 1.) PREVENTION beats CURE all day long. 2.) Rule one when someone's TRYING to kill you... don't let their attack succeed. If they're trying to stab you, don't let that freaking knife stick or slice you. PERIOD. 3.) CONTROL the weapon arm, and get to a position where they CANNOT employ the weapon on you. 4.) MAKE THEM STOP TRYING TO KILL YOU... NOW... OR... 5.) GET THE BLOODY HELL AWAY FROM THEM BEFORE THEY DO MANAGE TO KILL YOU. That's it... no glamour... no bullshit... It does not matter HOW you ACCOMPLISH those five things. It DOES matter that you DO ACCOMPLISH those things, BEFORE the attacker(s) manage to kill your ass. There's nothing complicated about it. No special "trick moves" that work all the time. You don't need a black belt. You need COMMON SENSE... and a STRONG DESIRE not to get hurt or killed, CERTAINLY helps!

Just like the traditional martial arts guys with the whole "when they do this you do this", the attacker does the movement the defe der is expecting and vice versa. Not saying these techniques are innefective, but I'd like to see an uncontrolled demo after the explanation where the knife attacker can try and stab/slice however he wants and the other guy tries to defend/disarm effectivly. Give the dude with the knife a marker so you can see where there were knife attacks landed afterwards. That would be a much more convincing demo.

This method is basically the universal go to defense for knife attacks. It's simple, accounts for gross motor skill deterioration, and is really the only thing that has any chance of working. I'd understand your skepticism if it was something that involved fine motor skills, or something absurd like kicking a knife out of someone's hand. But when it comes to such a straightforward, practical method this criticism doesn't really make sense to me. This method *has* been pressure tested btw. Richard Dimitri, Craig Douglas, Marc Denny. Basically anyone that law enforcement or military rely on for combat centric training teach their own version of arm control and isolation and have demonstrations of it being pressure tested against resisting opponents. I mean fuck dude... this isn't Akido. It's using two arms to control one arm. Why *wouldn't* it work, lmfao.

Ive been to 4 penitentiaries in 2 different states (years ago) and witnessed lots of stabbings and they’ve NEVER came head in like that, never rarely aimed for stomach (usually neck or back area), and almost never 1 on 1. Besides the fact that most people never seem to see a issue to begin with. Better example: have you walking in a group with 20-30 other men and 3 unknown men in the group have pokers. Then with the back turned they all rush you from behind and start stabbing your back head neck face chest arms legs any open skin blocked or unblocked. How do I defend against this? What about using your (in this case) right fist/ridge-hand to slam down and (to your) left on his elbow/upper arm while simultaneously stepping back with your left foot to create distance and pull him off balance? That could push him slightly into a right turn, taking the weapon off-line with your body, and could allow your right hand to "bounce" back from the forearm attack to an attack on his face with the objective of whipping his head back, following up with your left hand if possible. This combination could spin his body around to his right, back and down into a head slam on the ground. Yeah, and then I woke up.

That is how I've seen most "real world" instinctual knife attacks occur by untrained killers, and even most trained experts are unable to capture the knife hand without dealing with the leveraging arm first, even using the two on one techniques. The attacker is typically able to yang the knife back away and stab again and again.

Yeah, I have very small sample size of stabbings I saw, but it seemed to me like half of it happened while someone was busy eating and another half was random encounter in corridor. So scary how quickly the blade appears. The person gets stabbed several times before they even react. Similar attacks happen in real life as well. Sometimes some crazy junkie decides the best way to get your wallet is to take it from your dead body... they do not even bother asking for it nicely and showing you a big knife to make a very persuasive point. The best option in that case (do not think prisons allow it though) is some kind of body armour. So many knife attacks are surprise attacks and you are unlikely to recognise them before you are stabbed few times... You can still fight after being stabbed and you might even survive, but I am interested in the subject and I really think that if you want to have a decent chance of surviving without life threatening injuries, it is wise to actually invest in some protective equipment you can wear under clothing.

I think that protecting your arms (from cuts and slashes) and torso (from stabs and cuts) is the most important part and actually doable. It is rare that someone targets neck first, let alone armpits or femoral arteries. I do not think that armour alone is good enough, but it somewhat negates the majority of surprise attacks and gives you fighting chance, it is much harder to defend yourself after you have been stabbed two times already. Grab his attacking wrist with both hands and headbutt. And NEVER let go until they hit the floor. Your two arms are Stronger than One arm...you will likely sustain Some sort of cuts or nicks in a knife fight, just accept that now....but there's really no other options in Most situations....if he doesn't attack, you have options....if he DOES strike first, you have 2 options....Run...or go Full Bore for that Wrist...and you're only Realistic attack option is a Headbut or groin kick...or Bite his face......with a kick you run the risk of losing grip....with a headbutt you can Keep control, and one headbutt will almost guarantee he Drops.....

The issue with knife attacks (I would argue especially) in prison is that they are mostly surprise attack. The best (if not the only) legit defence against surprise knife attack is some kind of armour and prisons usually do not allow that...unless you are guard there. Even if you expect a knife attack it is too easy to get stabbed.

To all the people critisizing this approach to the given scenario and that i won't work: Yes, mabye it won't or isn't even the "most realistic" situation for it to happen. You are correct about that. What some of you missing in my opinion is the fact that HE KNOWS IT TOO! Everyone training/ teaching a self defense system with the proper mindset KNOWS that it can and most likely will end bad for the defender. There is no bullet proof solution to anything! BUT with that being said: I better have SOME options than none. If I get in any kind of knife attack in the first place, my overall chances of survival are about 5% anyway. If I can increase them to about 20% through several YEARS of training - I'd do it!

I've seen two stabbing in prison & like the top comment said it's usually a solo ambush or worse it's a designed ambush by a group to get you at your most vulnerable. The best thing to to do is to run & not engage. It's fight you're not designed to win.

You can't disengage from that scenario without using some kind of training you can rely on. You're not going to levitate yourself away from that scenario you just described, at some point the defender has to fight back, control that knife and make that opening. to escape.

Oh man, while you're triying to fight his stabbing-hand he can go for a quick change and use his other hand... If you hold his arm for that long without hitting him he'll try to stab you with his free hand. You're right about the blocking but if you don't hit him hard as soon as you stop the first atack then you're dead

Only take advice from someone whom has actually taken a knife of somebody if someone reaches into a pocket leap onto their hand, if they fiddly grab onto their hand, stop the attack before it happens, if you anticipate someone coming into you cell when it’s association make sure you kettle is boiled they can’t get close to you if your threaten them with boiling hot water with sugar, the one that will be hard to stop is a guy who is simply walking past you and cuts your face over an small arguement you had or something unpredictable like that

Biggest problems with this and like this videos is about their assumption that person that is being atacked is going to see the knife on time. When I see on time I mean before the knife is moving towards your belly. When you see it coming it is already too late. You are already stabed. Second problem is that even if you see it on time they teach you to fight instead of teaching you to run

Your better off training yourself to be cold blooded. There are guys out there with all kinds of training but just don't have the meanness that would die. On the other hand there are all kinds of cold blooded guts that have no training but are mean as hell who who would survive. The cold blooded man looses his shit and its like 2nd nature to seriously fuck someone up. They will head stop, cheek hook, bite a ear off ect. Not saying training isn't good but you have to be willing to kill if you want to avoid being killed. That's why in the military they use to try to imprint aggression over everything else. 2nd thing is situational awareness. Know where you are mist vulnerable. Setting down, shower, back to the wrong position, in hand cuffs ect. 3rd thing is never talk shit and keep to your self and if you have to fight which unless your a complete bitch will happen because they will force it on you to know how much they can take from you. When that fight happens you be brutal you fuck that person up so every mother fucker knows that when your pushed to fighting there chances of walking away unharmed are 0%. Don't start shit but don't take any. Prison is a real issue in this day and time because of the corrupt system western societies live in. You cannot just avoid prison by being a descent person anymore. You can go to jail based solely on what someone has said to the wrong people.white men Especially are victimized by this. There trying to make red flag laws to lock up people on. They have hate crimes, womens act ect. They can openly and legally discriminate against white men. And all it takes is somebody accusing you. You don't have a right to shit in this country if your not a government employee or a entitled victim collective. So prison is not just for rapist, murders, robbers, child molesters, women beaters...., they could put you in jail for all kinds of shit for a long time. Its legal human trafficking.

I think what is shown here is not prison style of stabbing. they are holding a knife which is not available inside prison. All weapon for stabbing in prison are all if not usually improvised. It is rare that a prisoner will have a factory made knife. usually the stabbing weapon is for puncture, the rounded or no sharp blade but pointed. There are no improvised shard edge blade inside prison because there is no way for them to have a very good whetstone to whittle a rough metal to have a sharp blade but a pointed one can be done easily- just scratch and scratch the point of a metal object to whet it to become pointed. as I came to know, from ex-convicts and prison guards i n Philippine prisons, inmates have more improvised pointed weapon and they tie this weapon with cloth in their palm so that even when they will be hit knockdown the weapon remains on their palm.

Mmmm why even go for the knife hand if he already gave you his empty arm? As soon as that empty hand touches you thats the one you kazushi and break... Step back or to the outside breaking the elbow, shoulder, or wrist if you have it securely enough. And if you do go for his armed hand once you touch his arm he's going to flick that knife and fillet your wrist. Not good. And why knee when you could stomp break the ankle while driving through or back and dropping him? This isn't a MMA ring, break shit and fast. Yes, I've had noob students squirrelly enough to fillet at the wrists etc not solid advice. Stay out of range or break what ever touches you first, going to the outside if surroundings allow
