Princess Peach Fashion: An Emerging Icon

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

With my recent content revolving around dissecting character fashion and design, I had to dedicate a video to Princess Peach (Toadstool).
In this video, I go into some of Peach's earliest design development - between Super Mario Bros. NES, and her 3D refinement in Super Mario 64 and beyond (including Party, Kart and Smash).
Then I review some variations in her outfits throughout some late 90s/early 2000s sports game and Super Mario Sundhine.
And finally reach a point in Super Mario Odyssey, highlighting how the wide range of Peach's fashion assert her as an icon and highly beloved character.

I'm enamored by Peach in the first Mario Strikers, it just feels so different (in a good way) to see her with an outfit that shows more skin considering she was mostly into dresses up to that point. The black clothes from Odyssey are also very striking for very similar reasons, really like those.

I loved how you focused on Princess Peach's independence as a character shown through her fashion. As a character, she is often underwritten in the narrative of the games, which is a shame. The fact is most of the characters of the franchise are very one dimensional avatars for the player. That said, when she does take the stage, her being a fashion statement is a way for the player to make a statement too, and I love that.

Yeeesss - you 100% get it! You captured the essence of what I was trying to express here perfectly. Really hoping that Peach can get more opportunities to shine in future games (as well as Toad tbh, because I love him/them too)!

I hope she keeps developing because most of the stuff I like about her like her designs is the things that came as a result of evolving from her original basic damsel in distress role. Hopefully character such as Daisy will get similar evolutions.

Another great video X! Sadly, while Peach was undergoing a glow up from just a 'damsel in distress' to becoming one of video game history's most recognizable female character; left with her a character burrowing her design that was created out of necessity in the past and left to the dust: Daisy. It sucks to see that the limelight is only big enough to fit one (or in rare cases, two) female 'supporting character' when they've shown time and time again that they can bring back older characters and re-imagines them slightly to fit any art direction that the Super Mario franchise is going for, especially with Odyssey 'pseudo-realism' and beyond. Which makes Peach's different outfits for different locales in Odyssey feel like a true expression of her character - as her core design has been fully realized as early as 1990s in Super Mario World but was never given the opportunity to shine in the core franchise. Talking about different characters and i'll get back to Daisy in a moment: While Pauline's 'cocktail' design stayed relatively the same, it's undeniable they pushed the femme fatale that's never really seen before from official sources, as she was designed to be 'another' damsel in distress for Mario to rescue. They also gave her a sleek alternative, business oriented outfit befitting her new role as a mayor. While Rosalina was absent in Odyssey, she's been in more mainline AND spin-off games than either of them in the recent years, despite being the newest addition. You can see their creative dichotomy the most in their costume designs in the Mario Kart Tour outfits and then there's Daisy. An unfortunate case of "copying a style without owning it" - I would even say the style is deliberately forced on her. If i had to put it in different words; it's taking heavy inspiration without considering and incorperating your personality and identity. It's very disheartening to see that the little/much character that we've seen from her (through spin-off games animation, short dialogue, voice clips etc.) seldomly or almost never reflects her bold, abrasive personality in her choice of clothing and the way she presents herself. I'd often see people call her a tomboy because of that. I hope someday, she isn't just a shadow to Peach's success and we'll see her own glow up in the future. Also as a sidenote - Daisy's skin tone has lightened up over the years since her inception

Thank you - love your detailed insights and perspective on the female representation. I definitely feel like Daisy is underrated - she deserves more originality out into future designs for sure. It's funny how the girls with the lightest hair and eyes (Peach and rosalina) get pushed the most - feels like it has to do with beauty standards. Which if true, is a bit unfortunate. May make a video exploring that - as you presented some interesting points that do relate to style evolution and standards

One thing I especially love concerning Peach is how she's handled in Smash. You end up seeing so much more of that "Elegant, regal, gentle but not afraid to scrap" energy that her Strikers depiction has. When shes just existing, shes pretty and cute and she dances and sings and solves her problems with tea and a firm scolding but the moment the fight is on, she is absolutely unshakable in her confidence. She uses everything at her disposal as a weapon from her parasol to her sporting equipment and she does it with class and elegance. Even her sacred crown finds utility as a set of brass knuckles, which is still my absolute favorite Peach "thing" ever. She just reaches up, lays out a haymaker and its right back in its place before you even realize its gone. It shows that her greatest weapon is herself. The totality of her identity is all that she needs, which is often a design principal when making Smash iterations of characters.

My favorite peach outfit is definitely her debut melee outfit the corset addition to her dress was a serve cinching her waist even tighter and elongating her body where her normal dress doesn’t have the corset visible and always makes her a little more short

There is an aesthetic I've always loved but never had the knowledge to articulate it accurately and put a name to it. Characters like Princess Peach, Penelope Pitstop and (multiple versions) of Barbie. What would you call this aesthetic? Some have said "token girl", but I feel like there's so much more to it than that. It's the archetype that trickled down to give us Regina George and Sharpay Evans.
