Pokémon Scarlet/Violet is a Designer Fashion Show

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I really enjoyed the style and fashion of the characters in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet (Gen 9) - particularly the Gym Leaders and the Elite 4/Champion. So I cover my thoughts and opinions in 3 main sections:
Part 1 - General thoughts on overall style of the characters in Paldea
Part 2 - Review of the Gym Leaders Outfits/Styles:
- Katy (Bug)
- Brassius (Grass)
- Iono (Electric)
- Kofu (Water)
- Larry (Normal)
- Ryme (Ghost)
- Tulip (Psychic)
- Grusha (Ice)
Part 3 - Review of the Elite 4/Champion Outfits/Styles
- Rika (Ground)
- Poppy (Steel)
- Larry (Flying)
- Hassel (Dragon)
- Geeta (Mixed)

What I love about Larry's design is that both his types are implimented in the outfit. He's got his regular business attire and looks like a normal dude for...well...normal. But he also has the windswept strands of hair and his cloud tie for the flying types.

On top of that, after Normal, Flying is the most "Normal" of the types, so he never strays too far out of his comfort zone.

While not a design detail I love some of the pokemon choices for him, like Komala which is always sleeping referencing the "tired overworked business man" part of him and Pom-Pom style Oricorio on his E4 team which the pokedex for Pom-Pom Oricorio mentions how it cheers up people by dancing and also on his E4 team, Altaria wraps trusted people with its soft wings and hums which is stated to be beautiful

I came here through the JoJo video and absolutely must say that you have found a niche here that I never knew I needed: Analyzing fashion and designs in video game/fictional media and make them fun and educational for laymen. Many channels only ever gloss over design aspects of characters because their entire channel revolve around the franchise so they feel obligated to talk about them in passing; but the way you present the topic and explain not only the purpose, but emotions those designs invoke - all so easily understandable to someone who has no ounce for personal fashion is VERY refreshing. To the actual video itself; I absolutely adore Katy's design - the antennae imprint on her chefs' hat/beret and sleeves while keeping the design practical to her occupation. It's very warm and inviting much like you described it with "cottage-core", something that you should feel when you associate yourself with a bakery or café! Also, Ryme feels like she represents what Hip-Hop and R&B was in the early 2000's. I lack the vocabulary to make describing her any justice, but she has that 'Missy Elliot in her prime' vibe while showing elegance that is deserving for her age. Which they took the phrase "old school" quite literally. There's so much to unravel with her character that this HAS to be my favourite modern Pokemon character design. At first glance, I thought she would be befitting of a stereotypical Fighting-Type (strong gold accents with an open, dominant pose), but the more I look at her character in detail the more sense it makes that she would be a Ghost-Type. These were my thought process as follows: "Oh she's an MC... MC's are typically associated with rap and hip-hop... the genre has roots to Soul... oh" This is all coming from someone who has never seen those character designs before until today! I fell out with the Pokémon hype when SuMo came out so I only ever follow gameplay and meta related topics. Either way, your passion for fashion is truly contagious, so whatever your next ideas will be - please keep doing what you do and keep doing it with your heart! You're absolutely on the right track X!

Same. The ghostly Cofagrigus-like hand in front, the playful bow in back. And as for the rest, wow. The bodycon dress, charcoal with a bit of a raised pattern of ovals. The custom kicks, naturally. Gold accents making her eyes pop and her lips super noticeable. And can we discuss the jewelry?! Like, pokemon. The fact that they used turquoise for a ghost-type trainer is just... absolutely fantastic. Not only does it look gorgeous, the spiritual symbolism behind turquoise is pretty deep, often symbolizing wisdom through the cycle of death and rebirth. In addition, turquoise jewelry is plentiful in archaeological digs... you know, like the kind she and her sister might have taken part in. Tyme and Ryme are two takes on the same idea- ancient ruins. It's just so good omg That being said I know basically nothing about Spain so idk how much of this game makes sense in context of Spain rather than South America.

I don't really care for the designs of the pokemon themselves these days (haven't really been "wowed" by a pokemon since gen 5) but I stg, every generation, the designs for the human characters just get better and better. Ryme is probably my favorite design in years- the fact that they made a character who's an older, larger black woman and not only didn't make her a joke or a characiture, but made her a gorgeous idol? We've come a long way since the Lenora mammy contreversay (which I think was a good learning experience for TPC because they've been knocking it out of the park with black character designs since and I am so happy). Also (raises hand) it's me- I'm the one out here simping for Larry. I am a proud karesen (lover of middle-aged men) and pokemon has been feeding me well since gen 5. The fact that so many players get blindsided by his type change up in the Elite 4 is hilarious because it's telegraphed in his design- not only do his gray hairs look like feathers, but the only pop of color in his design, his tie, is a blue sky with a white cloud print! The camera zooms in on him- and the tie- multiple times when you battle him, begging the player to notice, and none of the streamers I watched seemed to, lol.

  • @XDF

REALLY appreciate your amazingly thoughtful comment. I definitely love the maturity in the player designs in this Gen and sincerely hope they continue to feature more - since a lot of OG pokemon fans (myself included) have been around since the beginning! There were a lot of subtle, but very well thought out elements for each trainer that related to their types, without feeling over the top. Which is why I couldn't resist making this video - especially since I love fashion.

@@Squirreltasticqueen Yeah I kind of understood the argument against Lenora... theoretically. but I didn't really consider it as blatant as many claimed. I thought her design was nice, if a tad reserved.

Came here from the Jojo video, and it's great to see that the content is consistently great! I'm definitely with you on just about all of these. Iono is dead last to me, but everyone else is just rocking their fit. And even Iono feels like she's presenting herself as this larger-than-life character who's not *supposed* to fit in with normal society, since she mostly exists online, y'know? It feels so intentionally garish that it almost circles back around to being chic. Almost. It doesn't get there. But it almost does it! If I had to give my top three favorites from these games as far as fashion goes, it'd be Ryme (all those accessories just WORK, man, and it manages to not feel overly busy even with all that stuff going on because it's so cohesive!), then Rika (I'm a sucker for business casual, and I just love her hair, too!), and then Katy (I just love that warm, cozy aesthetic, and the subtle things like the spiderweb cuffs and pin are lovely accents). Of course, and I know you didn't discuss the academy teachers in this video, but the absolute best fit in the game in my eyes is Raifort, and there's no contest. Her rustic look with that denim jacket is accentuated with the necklace, large buckle on her belt, the asymmetry with her only bothering to tuck in one side of her shirt (and showing a touch of midriff in the process), the subtle but tasteful plume on her hairband; everything about her is just so striking and appealing without being extravagant. What a queen! As a side note, shout outs to Saguaro for not being ashamed to not only wear a bright pink pinstriped buttonup, but absolutely kill it.

Tulip is my favourite because she is so sophisticated, feminine, and elegant. My second favourite is probably Geeta, she looks like a baker/chef, I love her hat, and has that warm mother vibe; she also looks sophisticated and elegant in a motherly way in comparison to Tulip who looks more evening wear inspired, think opera house. Brassius is also a great look. I find it hilarious how people are fawning over Larry.

i really love the elite 4 and champion in this game thematically, cus the whole game is like.. you're a student, you're in school, the gym leaders are meant to be seen as tests and exams, but when you reach the elite 4, you have to do a whole ass job interview and then face off against these characters in super serious business attire... it really gives the feeling of like "now you're in the world of adults." i also think ryme is my favorite of the gym leaders, i love how her outfit looks almost like funeral wear, like she's in mourning but also doing concerts because it ties into her backstory of becoming a ghost-type trainer after her favorite pokemon died and came back as a ghost lol

Pokemon Scarlet/VIolet fashion stood out to me as well. I love costume pieces (my fave is Valerie from X/Y with her wing-sleeves), but you hit the nail on the head with the designer elements to this new generation. Geeta's look competes with Cynthia's vibe/music for the top Champion aesthetics of all time for me, as Diamond/Pearl stan.

Also came from the Jojo vids - absolutely enjoyed those and find myself agreeing with a lot of points you made. I'm personally not sure if this was the niche you were aiming for, but you definitely have a great eye for fashion in pop culture. Even if these are your personal takes, you make some really good observations and have some details I haven't even thought of myself (e.g. the baker uniform having a near-cocoon shape). I look forward to your future vids while I watch your previous ones. Some comments on this specific video: - Iono is kinda of an extreme shortening (the real word for this currently escapes me) of "I don't know" - "I dunno"- "I'ono" so the pronunciations around those words. - Her intro alludes to this by saying "Whoswhatsit?" - Same goes for her name in other languages usually following a pattern of "What is that?'" or electric-type related terms. In terms of functionality, I personally think that Pokemon Sword and Shield still holds the award for the best balance between functionality and quintessential gym leader design. Most of them are basically sports uniforms for their types but with an added Trainer extravagance such as Nessa's floater anklets and Allister's mask. Only exception being Leon, he's the type of dude to wear the cape because he just wants to be seen as the champion wherever he goes (still a good man though).
