In part one of Snobette's interview with Princess Nokia, the New York singer & rapper discusses her next "entirely rap" music project "1992," slated for a July release. Nokia explains why she plans to remain an independent artist, saying, "There is no money in record deals," adding, "I'm not a woman looking to be taken advantage of." She also explains the message behind her most recent video, "Tomboy," pointing out the video speaks to her identity as a NYC kid, and also is about duality and "being the coolest person and the ugliest at the same time." Nokia also discusses experiencing gentrification and how it's impacted her and the low-income NYC neighborhoods she grew up in. " Says Nokia, "[Gentrification] makes people feel like they're f***ing animals, like they're worth is nothing."
Note: Comments and feedback are very much appreciated, but we do remove any one-dimensional insults or attacks.

Her personality and dualism reminds me of PRINCE ALOT, the way she went from street to posh at the end of the interview - her androgyny - use of alter ego's... both Gemini's

Thank you for calling out gentrification for what it is. This interviewer was trying to make it seem like it was such a positive thing.

Thanks for the comment but no I wasn't. There are people in poor neighborhoods who view gentrification as a positive and it's okay to present Nokia with that idea to see what her take is because it makes for a much more interesting exchange. Tbh, I mostly see gentrification as bad yet sadly inevitable.

"How do you feel about the way new york has upgraded and specifically how it has impacted your people" Its all in the words you use; "Upgraded", implies a good thing "Your people", implies seperation, between pre-gentrification, and gentrifiers. You also laughed in the interview, when Princess Nokia spoke about speaking up about gentrification in real time. You say some people from "working class / poor neighborhoods believe gentrification has an upside" ...who? The new rich white peoplr have moved in? Maybe its time you do more research on gentrification. Several people have commented, and commented on replies about you speaking up for gentrification and not one of these people has been able to see your point of view -sincerely, an East Oakland CA born and bred native who has been experiencing gentrification to devestating effects

@@alinaarachnaphobic this is a million years ago but as I stated I do NOT view gentrification as a good thing but neighborhoods are not monoliths, people have different feelings about neighbors changing esp poor and working class people who are home owners (yes they exist). The assumption that everyone who is poor or working class thinks the exact same way is the equivalent of a stereotype and you as an East Oakland resident should know that. And I don't have to do research. I already stated my feelings about the dynamic which are not positive. However, gentrification is very complex and not easily broken down in a sentence or two.
she knows her self and embraces it 👌
her vocabulary is so efficient like what am i doing
She speaks to me, she speaks to us. YOU all know who we are. She is US. She represents US.
A good female rapper who is actually intelligent and not obsessed with superficial shit.

Her train story legit happened to me and my family on our block we've lived on generationally for over 50 yrs. Elitist sloppy drunks girls on some bullshit only the ethnic ppl around them would've got arrested for.
first time heard about her today and I think she is great.
I dig her message and her confidence. A very inspiring, intelligent, and strong woman.
Te amo preciosa! I'm so excited for your new project
i love her mannerisms like yes ! same tho !
Listening to her talk is even a song itself
Incredibly well spoken and spot on
she reminds me of Jada Pinkett-Smith

Some people who live in NYC''s poor & working class neighborhoods believe gentrification has upside. Nokia absolutely does not agree and we value & respect her view. It's a very complex dynamic and not everyone thinks the same way. Our goal is to conduct interviews in which people like Nokia have a platform to be experts and add their views to the debate.

Snobette idk anybody in the poor/working class who knows what gentrification is and thinks that it's effects will be beneficial for them but okay... Sounds like you're talking about the ny's who can deal with the effects and not the ones who would have a more difficult time
@lauranaut

Nah. Folks in those neighborhoods want the respect and dignity that residents of other neighborhoods are treated with. That's a different thing. Gentrification leads to the displacement of working class families of color. Those families only wanted to live and work in a neighborhood where the government wasn't trying to establish blight to kick them out and profit off development deals. They wanted for the city to care about their safety, sanitation, and education as much as they care for affluent folks in the surrounding area. So, yes, it's complex, but you just warped a legitimate point of view into a falsehood. Don't play, Snobette.

br33stAr10469 Some neighborhoods are looking much nicer(which we can all agree on), but nicer for who?(white people, which is the downside) The average person doesn't see that.
