Princess Ka‘iulani of Hawai‘i: Part 1

Princess Ka‘iulani of Hawai‘i's story is one of hope and betrayal, of deception and revolution, of surfing and painting and dancing, and of incredible tenacity and bravery.
In this first installment, we meet her parents, Archibald Scott Cleghorn and Princess Likelike of Hawai‘i. We see little Ka‘iulani grow up with full confidence in the role she was born to play - a future sovereign of her country. And we see her face the first devastating tragedy of her young life.
But to set up what's about to happen to her, we have to take a step back in time and find out why Hawai‘i's political situation was so tense during the reign of her uncle, King Kalākaua.
Because once you understand how we got here, Ka‘iulani's story is even more poignant. Yes, this is the story of a little girl with a pony who asked her uncle for a diamond ring. But it's also the story of a country struggling to keep its culture and its independence. Of a country fighting enemies seen and unseen - including death, disease, and infertility.
The stakes? Nothing less than the land and the soul of a nation.

Pronunciations
---------------------------
I studied for hours before recording and did my best to pronounce Hawaiian names and places. I even made an audio supercut cheat-sheet of pronunciations to study clipped from interviews, broadcasts, podcasts, and more. I'm afraid I'll never get "Kalākaua" right, despite hours and hours of attempting it and re-recording. Out of respect for the Hawaiian language and what its native speakers have been through, I'm determined to keep trying. I apologize for anything I got terribly wrong.

ABOUT THE GIRL IN THE TIARA
----------------------------------------------------
👑 I tell stories about tiaras and the fascinating royal women who wore them. Join me as I follow these tiaras across generations and countries, through wars and revolutions and-sometimes-into darkness and disappearance and destruction.
This isn't the kind of history your professor lectured about. Instead, think of this as conversational history, like a mash-up of Drunk History and The Crown. Yes, there's a little swearing. There's also humor and heart and a boatload of compassion for these amazing royal women.
ABOUT ME
-------------------
👑 I never intended to start a channel or a website about tiaras and royal history. But a midlife crisis forced me to re-examine my life. I gave up fiction writing after self-publishing 9 of the 10 books I'd written and earning next to nothing.
Instead of the misery of marketing books, I turned to my first love...royal history. So here I am, a 40-something burnout, trying to start over by recapturing her love of history, royal women, and their jewels.

As a Kanaka Maoli, both of my parents are born of Hawaiian origin, both of them have parents who come from Maui and Kona, Big Island. My great grandparents are from Wales of England and Ireland. My great grandparents were born and raised in the neighboring Big Island and Maui. You did a wonderful service to our Kanaka Maoli’ community and families. My youngest sister’s middle name is Ka’iulani. She’s named after the Princess Ka’iulani. As a Polynesian man from Hawai’i who married another Polynesian from American Samoa we share our cultures, traditions and customs. I commend your dedication to teaching other non-Hawaiians about our history from its inception. Not many people can understand and do what you did. You’ve recognized that you’re a Haole girl and that’s understandable. But so far you’re right on the facts about our Hawaiian Kingdom. Mahalo nui loa Malama Pono. Kawai Kau’pe, Jr.

There's an image in the last video in the series (episode 4) where the Hawaiian flag was lowered for the last time. It made me cry...it was just so *wrong*. That’s not what the mahele was but the outcome still happened as explained. Just for different reasons. The Mahele was for natives not foreigners. And all land was still vested in perpetuity to the King for the natives. Foreigners could only lease land. Mahele was an effort of the King to preserve land for natives, especially given that the rules of international relations at the time gave respect for private land owners. So if a country was to take over the government, the natives rights to their land was still intact. Mahele was NOT successful as much as it should have because various reasons. Understanding from the natives is a reason, but so was the need to travel from far distances in order to register for land. Hawaiians always owned land, otherwise why would anyone claim it was stolen. The concepts and responsibilities of ownership was different in the mind of Natives vs Foreigners.

There's absolutely not Bantus, Cushitic, and Nilotic phenotypes of the ancient Polynesians. The ancient Polynesians are as different from the Micronesians, and Melanesians of the South Pacific! I'm sick and tired of American Black (Bantuid) males trying to make revisionist historical analysis without any proof to the contrary. Stop the lies.

Please....King Kamehameha brutally conquered the Hawaiian Islands stealing the land from the chiefs of each island....everybody acts like that's ok...if Hawaii had not become an American state I guarantee another nation would have conquered Hawaii either.peacefully or by force....just like native american tribes were conquering eachother for hundreds.of years before being conquered by USA....before American missionaries came to Hawaii, native Hawaiians did not have a written language it was American missionaries that helped create a written Hawaiian language...without literacy you would only have oral traditions and you would be unable to have a clear written record of your history, there would be no higher education...no engineering, No written history....we can't live in the past..its not real. As much as any of us might wish to return to the past it is a fantasy in the mind....it is a delusion not reality...time is always moving forward...the past is gone it will never return...the present is all you have.......if you were to protest King Kamehameha you would have been slaughtered. It is because you have a right to freedom of speech.protected by the USA 🇺🇸 constitution that you are able to legally protest against the USA 🇺🇸 Government...while living in the 🇺🇸....like it or not Hawaii is 🇺🇸..FACTS.... Lets be honest....Hawaii was in the stone age before the westerners 🇺🇸 came and taught you how to read and write, do mathematics engineering, business, science....without western 🇺🇸 civilization you never would have received education, literacy technology...I'm not trying to be mean I'm just speaking the truth.....please stop glorifying the Kapuu system where ALL the land was owned by the King and all of the nstive Hawaiian people were his indentured servants...SLAVES...the western system 🇺🇸 has endured this long because it has been more functional than primitive, stoneage society....high tech is superior to stoneage tech....the irony is all of the technology you use in everyday life came from other countries...change is inevitable haoles are here to stay 🇺🇸 🇺🇲 Aloha 😎

USA f*cked over the Hawaiian people big time and stole their land in 1898 . Quite sad don’t you think? Ask a Hawaiian how they feel about being part of the US . I have many times

Your the problem! The Queen had a great education and if you took the time to look into it you would find that the sugar cane plantation owners took everything even their very language was not to be spoken. Watch the right documentaries. I guess it’s ok with you to not move our American dead but move the Hawaiian descendants out of their caves for progress! You are so far from where we are meant to be in the name of progress! 😢

You know why the great British aka English, Irish, Scottish, welsh came and Forcibly took the land. Because of Captain James Cook. He was the first white to be murdered by King Kamehameha in the late 1700s to early 1800s. And so they moved on the land and took it illegally. The crown of england stole everything and put it on their crowns. Jewels, gold, diamonds, artifacts and so much more. I would like to know what they did with the endeavour ship. Captain Cook's Ship.
