The 9 year old in me is going, "WWOOOOOWWWWWW!!!!". The 58 year old me is going, "WWOOOOOWWWWWW!!!!", also.

I spent much of my childhood recreating Waterloo using the Airfix set plus many other packs I purchased, what I would have done for this!

This must be one of the best Waterloo models, if not the best. The size of the units gives a real perspective of what the battle may actually have looked like. This is a fantastic achievement

Put this into half speed or x0.25 and marvel... wow!

Reminds me of the model railroader who not only built the Stuttgart central station with all its turnouts, but the entire city centre, building per building, with all the people....

Theres some guy on here with 250000 waterloo models looking for a museum to display, it took him 20 years apparently.

Wow I'm working on my waterloo diorama and have painted up about 600-700 figures so far so a long way to go

I have just seen your channel and figures... excellent work my friend. This diorama in my channel was not done my me sadly but a German modeller called André Rudolph. “Prince August” who are based in Cork/Ireland purchased the diorama off André Rudolph and have it displayed in their shop in Cork. John, I'm curious to know How much money could be offered to a man who spent 8 years of his life to part with such a masterpiece. If it were my work of passion, because that is what this truly is, I couldn't imagine a price worth parting myself from it. So, do you know how much it was purchased for?

Yes I have played several miniature war games of this magnitude and this is a pretty damn good diorama I have an Austrian army of the 15 mm 7 year war I have a French Prussian army of 15 mm of the Napoleonic wars and awesome achievement sir you did a damn good job and yes it's to the t of what the battle look like in real life

Wow staggering!! for anyone interested The Battle of Waterloo a new history of waterloo, Alessandro Barbero is a wonderfully detailed account, giving easy to understand layout of the battle and descriptions during each phase of the battle. Alhought it lacked in tactical maps of the actions around Hougomont and Planceniot the writers descriptions almost made up for it.

Outstanding.

"Oh, the HUMANITY"... just boggles the mind wn I contemplate Napoleonic style warfare. Good representation!

i have been to Waterloo, the British line is ruined by the mound. I stopped where Napoleon was, also where the British Union Brigade charged across the fields (seen from the french side). The lay of the land is very deceptive, (from Napoleon's position ), it looks like a small incline to the British lines, but that was not the case as the land dipped up and down. The troops marching across would have struggled to walk across/up/down it, esp with the mud on the their boots and facing cannon, musket or cavalry charges. The battlefield is very small only 5 miles across, but if you think about it, over 200,000 men were fighting in that area. Musket ball holes still in the the lay Saint farm. This was only 200 years ago, lots of monuments to the dead, mostly British, though one to the imperial guard and Prince of Orange being shot in his leg, hence the mound. I got the impression with all the museums and history about the place it was very pro french. If you see the epitaph on the mound you will see what i mean. The mound does give a great view of the battlefield though. There was on american born solider at the battle, he fought for the briitsh. I wonder what the Americans think of this battle?

@No. 6 at utube jail Gettysburg is not even close to Waterloo in its importance and size. Why? So much hung on the battle and the nationalities involved. If you put Waterloo happening in 1863 you probably have a 75,00 to 100,000 British army and 3,00,000 french and Prussian armies fighting. Of course, the battlefield would be a lot bigger. The comparable armies of the 1812 war were only a few thousand on either side.

@No. 6 at utube jail The battle of waterloo was fought in one day - or more importantly 7-8 hours, with the resultant casualty figures of around 50 -63k. There were two other battles before that, ie quatre bras and ligny, so the figures would have been higher (8,000, and 24,000). You do not raise the above facts, so you can elevate gettysburg. Waterloo was important because the UK became the dominant power, it could afford even in 1815 to fund all napoleon's enemies. As for a 75,000k brit army at an 1863 battle, I clearly state it was for the battle. Europe was massively richer than the US esp France, Prussia, etc. www.battlefields.org/learn/civil-war/battles/gettysburg gives casualties for both sides at 51k, for Gettysburg over 3 days and 50f years later. Effectively it meant the American war was a backwater of military tactics and tech. Americans need to STOP overstating their importance in their first 150 years of history. There is no way in hell the battle of Gettysburg is on par with the battle of waterloo. NONE. The battle of waterloo ended a major war. It establishes the might of the UK as the dominant power in Europe and the world. Gettysburg did neither for the US. Even if the US had lost, sure it would of sue for peace at that point or may be not. Like in the war of 1812 it just moved its capital, where the US president went. It's really embarrassing for Americans to try to overstate their influence on the world. If the American civil war was that important to the great powers at the time they would have got involved. No, it was not due to American threats, lol, the Europeans just laughed at them. If the south had won it would just mean a new power on the American continent and a much weaker US. This means the US would not have become a superpower in 1945. In fact, it never would. Americans are really embarrassed bout their lack of world clout before ww2 l. Very exciting! The cut off squares are amusing. I realize you want to convey that the battlefield was even larger than the space available on the table. But have you ever thought of bisecting some of the soldiers at the table edge to display their cross sections? It would emphasize the idea that this is a slice of a larger cake. A remarkable diorama but it still only represents about two-thirds of the battle. The farm of Hugomount and all the fighting that went on there would be just to the left of the board from the French side.

this is massive. The timing of the cavalry charge coinciding with the storming of the farm and the arrival of Blücher is a bit unhistoric i reckon but it gives a good overview of the most important events that took place on that day

That farmhouse in the middle is... La Haye Saint or is it Hougomant? I think its the former.

Damn the movement phase would take longer than the actual real battle of waterloo.....🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Amazing diorama... The total number was over 25 thousand figurines in this model whereas the real Waterloo numbers were 73 thousand troops.

Is there any historical reference for those poplars trees on the brussels charleroi road? or is it an artistic license? its beautiful by the way...

It's an amazing diorama and those trees were, in fact, part of the battlefield and from what I understand historically accurate.

SLOW PAN of CAMERA for the WIN

I'm not expert on the battle but am curious if the two 'flanks' either side of the farm house depict actions at different times? This looks like D'Erlon's attack on Wellington's left flank and on the right the events seem to depict Ney's charges which I think happened later in the day. Any confirmation of this would be appreciated. Stunning model!

That's an excellent question but from what I understand Ney's Calvery attack happened later in the day about 4 O'Clock. Ney tried to break Wellington's centre with cavalry alone but failed. When Napoleon saw the charge he said it was an hour too soon. The Hougoumont farmhouse engagement happed at around 11:30 what what I believe. So this amazing model depicts both of the battles happening at the same time but in actual fact this was not the case. I hope this helped you Oliie and thank you.

I believe you are correct D'Erlon's attack on Wellington's left happened before the massed cavalry charge on the British centre late in the afternoon. That charge involved 12,000 cavalry men and they were packed in so tight some historical reports say horses in the centre were actually lifted up off the ground and carried along by the pressure from the sides. Bernard Cornwall has done an excellent recent history of the battle.

Fact is most shots were aimed high at the horses or riders, even then most were misses. Most of the shots were aimed at cavalry charging the front of the squares or when retreating. Between the squares fire was reserved, lest the riders actually tried to break in which was not too often as the horses refused to impale themselves. As the battle progressed the areas in front became congested with dead riders and horses, charges had slowed to trots. Break ins were only achieved after cannon fire had decimated the ranks creating gaps or as the squares became less solid with fewer soldiers.

That's amazing. What scale is that? 1/72 ?

I believe 54mm for the figurines, the diorama is 30 sq meters and there are approximately 15,000 miniature soldiers on the diorama, including 2,000 cavalry thank you.

It Measures 26 x 13 feet and has more than 15,000 hand-cast and painted 25mm figures cast from the factory's own moulds.

Actually the biggest fear was Napoleon's cannons hitting the squares.

Maybe it's the way the models were made, other than that I'm not sure.

The Duke of Wellington shunned a model at the time because it showed the aproaching allies. He did not want to share the limelight.

The only model around at that time that fits the bill is Sibbornes waterloo. Paid for by British veterans and their families. The other nations did not contribute nor did they build their own. When this topic is raised it goes one of two ways, either it shows Allies and Wellington didn't want to acknowledge them -or it doesn't show any allies. Which bullshit version of the story is it?
