Primitive Technology: Sweet potato patch
I built a fenced enclosure and cultivated sweet potatoes (from civilisation) and yams (from the wild) in it. I originally had a small 3X3 m garden behind the wattle and daub hut that already had some sweet potato and yam vines growing in it that were planted after the hut was built. But wallabies kept eating the leaves. So I made a wattle enclosure around it to keep them out. Wood ash was added to the soil to provide potassium and phosphorus for the growing tubers.
The previous small garden was organised in rows (not seen in this video) but this was hard to water during dry weather. So I re-organised the patch into 1 meter wide mounds with pits in the centre. Vines were planted into the mounds and water poured into the centre of each mound watered the vines. So then I had a small garden with 9 mounds contained within it. I decided to enlarge the patch to fit in more mounds so I took out 2 sides of the fence and extended them by a meter each. So the patch ended up being 4X4m and contained 16 mounds. In addition to wood ash, leaf mould was added to the mounds for fertility and to reduce loss of moisture.
The patch, being in the dark forest understory, received only about 2-3 hours of direct sunlight per day so the yield was disappointingly small. Nevertheless, the patch produced a few small sweet potatoes and a single larger yam. I also picked some green growing tips of the sweet potato vine that can also be eaten. I boiled the greens slightly in a pot with a hot stone and ate the leaves. I then roasted the sweet potatoes and yam in the coals of the fire. The sweet potatoes (purple fleshed tuber) taste sweet and starchy whereas the yam (white fleshed tuber) tastes similar to an ordinary potato. After eating, I took the wood ash from the fire and poured it back into the mounds that were harvested, replanted them and watered them. In future I’d plant the sweet potatoes in an area that receives much more sunlight in order to dramatically increase production. I’ve grown the same variety at home and it produces a much greater quantity and size of tubers in full sun. Wood ash also tends to increase tuber yield and so is a good use for waste ash.
The sweet potato is a remarkable plant. It’s a staple food of many traditional cultures. NASA has considered it a potential crop to be grown on spaceships for long term missions. In terms of energy production it’s only 3rd behind sugar cane and cassava. It produces the most food value (a combination of edible energy and nutrition) of any crop per unit space and time. A study of Fijian farms using manual labour showed that ratio of energy put into farming vs yield of energy was 1:17 for rice and 1:60 for sweet potato. It grows on marginal soil and doesn’t require much nitrogen to grow. It takes a relatively short growth period of 3-4 months to yield. All parts of the plant can be eaten including the leaves which provide additional protein and nutrients. I grow the purple variety (because it tastes better in my opinion) but all varieties are nutritious and will stave off malnutrition. A person could potentially be nearly self-sufficient from a small plot of sweet potatoes. Note that in colder climates, regular potatoes could be grown instead of sweet potatoes.

Oof, when we leave leaves (unintended pun haha) on the soil from last autumn along with plants they tend to rot and cause the plant stems to rot as well?? Do you have any solution? Although that might just be bc our soil is more clay than the soil in the video (believe it or not)

Ash can also be used to wash one's hands (mix with water). Just rinse it off quickly and thoroughly, because it's an acid (or base, I don't know which) and can irritate your skin.

@@Bluecho4 its a base, and i wonder how strong it actually is when made naturally. Like say in a volume ratio of 4 parts ash and 1 part water, would you be able to dissolve stuff like food or similar readily? To make real soap you'd need a source of oil/fat though.

Ok. Just gonna say it. I think that this channel legit is the best in terms of utilizing primitive techniques out in the wilderness. Compared to the many channels that has been inspired by his content, his is far superior, focusing more on the functional aspect, making tools, sensible huts, farms, pots and different types of fireplaces instead of fancy wood/mud houses with pools that mostly are made to look pretty. Of course, those channels are valid too, but it loses its " wow " factor when done so much.
Dude, your channel is so good. I always feel it's worth the wait for every video and I even watched this one twice. Keep up the good work.

I didn't know the encampment was in Australia. Knowing what lives on the island, I would be scared of what hides under the fallen leaves and in the vegetation. You surely are a brave man.

What's best about sweet potato is that it's sprouts are like hydra, you pluck one more of it pops up the next day as long as you water it well. Most viable food for life.
When i watch these its like see the point of view of a villager in the age of empires series. Man itd be great to have you on a podcast i find this fascinating

It was a huge step forward for humans when we stopped only hunting and gathering and began to farm. when he builds his kiln to make clay pots and then uses the pots to carry water to his garden you're literally witnessing evolution. It freed human beings up to cultivate artistry, culture and other higher functions exclusive to humanity.

Yeah but it also depleted soil over the millennia hunter gatherers had it all till then ! Very little sickness and pretty much food when ever they wanted to look for it ! Farming has two speeds feast or famine ! Look up Toby hemingways history of farming it's an eye opener

Keltic Viking and then we got around that using cover crops etc, if everything that grew depleted soil then earth would be barren, the only depleted soil is mistreated soil, hence big ag now no till cover crops etc etc, there isnt any magic to soil its just chemicals and microbes

jnixa1010 we have been subsistence farmers for a long time in various manners. We did start with root veges like the video a reallllly long time ago. Not like traditional methods of plots and things like that but scattered willy nilly

+GIURIT You know he just comes to this patch of land to film his videos , then goes home and eats and sleeps well, with no bugs biting him and with medical attention if he needs it. Besides, this forest isn't like the places on naked and afraid where they choose the shittiest environments possible where everything is out to kill you. Besides, his hut took a month to make (if i remember correctly) and the sweet potatoes need 3-4 months to yield. He wouldn't get to do that in the 21 days. And he wouldn't have enough energy to build all the cool stuff like bows and arrows that he did on this channel because he built that with energy from eating normally at home, not hunting the occasional snake and such.

DuhWhiteKSI No it's a line from the Lord Of The Rings movie where the character Sam is sarcastically talking about potatoes to someone else and part of that was giving obvious examples of how they are prepared. My understanding is that three examples are meant to be three separate ways to prepare potatoes, not three stages for one way to eat them. Mashed potatoes would not hold up well in a stew unless you're wanting a thick potato stew, not chunks of potatoes in a clear broth.

In my family, we don't put potatoes in the stew, but instead pour the stew over mashed potatoes.

Brunlera Everywhere you turn in Australia there's a new fatally poisonous species of something. Plenty of snakes that can kill you there, but it's everything else you need to worry about. Hell, even a platypus can kill you with poison. If it's native to Australia, assuming it can probably kill you is for the best.

You should show us how you handle pest and wild life that try to bother you. Such as that snake you just showed. Some form of bug repellent? Or a trap for rodents? That would be interesting.

Eucalyptus oil over body, dried orange peels and bay leaves on the floor, and some crushed garlic too. I'm sure there are more things to repel insects and other creatures.
