@Apentogo You do know standing blacksmiths keep their tools on a bench or stand, right? They don't throw them to the ground
@Charles-A
3 жыл бұрын
@Apentogo "its actually much stranger for blacksmiths to forge while standing, cuz that way you have to spend time to raise all your equipment up off the ground and you tend to become inefficient with the placement to give you room to walk around." Not at all. Besides, there's no inconvenience on where the tools go. It's just a difference in position and height of the setup, and standing is a better platform for that than sitting or worse, kneeling
@kadenwhiteaker
3 жыл бұрын
@Apentogo True, but when you're off the ground you are away from the muck and impurities and can mount your stuff more efficiently. You also have less limitations and can brace your body better. For example, if you have your grinder a little too far away, you wobble on your knees so you don't have to reposition, because it's just habit.

It was amazing to see brain, hand and eye so coordinated through experience as to need no help from measuring devices. In the knife, technology meets art. Forging and blade making have been done roughly the same way for many hundreds of years but I wonder whether the old man has an apprentice, or will his skills die with him? We are living at the end of an era.

The man who is acting as the striker with the heavy hammer, would be the apprentice in this case, possibly he would be the senior apprentice or journeyman with the responsibility of helping the master craftsman, to teach any other apprentices and to provide discipline as necessary. The youngest apprentices would be responsible for doing any household chores including fetching any food and cooking it as well as studying their profession. Bear in mind that a metalworkers apprenticeship in some parts of the world can start as young as 7 or 8 years old and they might only become a journeyman, well into their 20’s finally passing out of their time at anything up-to or over 40 years old.

@@johnb7889 I spent many years as a fitter welder on my knees alot of the time and yes I would agree, my knees can be very sore at times, wear and tear I should of wore the knee pads. I did a bit of smithing as well and would love to set up me own forge just to try make some swords and knives.

@Apentogo You do know standing blacksmiths keep their tools on a bench or stand, right? They don't throw them to the ground
@Charles-A
@kadenwhiteaker
