Primitive Skills: How to make Spinning wheel, manual yarn rewinding machine (ep202)

Hello everyone, my name is Duong.
I am 32 years old.
I live in a poor mountainous area of Vietnam.
From a young age, I had to work hard to help my parents.
Difficult life is always around, I work and learn everything from my grandparents and the old people in the village.
Gradually, I mastered the skills.
5 years ago, I decided to live the challenge.
Determined to learn about the primitive way of life, I chose to live in the wilderness, alone.
Where there's no technology and forcing yourself to pass, it feels great!
How about you? Your life is definitely different from mine.
Have fun watching the video!

    I remember about a year ago, you posted that your cotton experiment had failed, and I poked fun at you because you seemed to have underestimated the amount of work it takes to make a shirt. Now you're here with cotton in abundance, creating a self-styled primitive spinning wheel from nothing but wood, bamboo and string! I love how you proved me wrong! Respect, Duong.

    It would be good to add some dirt around your concrete floor. It is being under cut by the rain drips from the roof line. This will eventually weaken enough that it will crack your floor. Just a few inches of clay packed around the edges will help the water run away from the building and prevent further erosion under the floor.

    For those who don't quite understand how the cotton is being turned into thread, the fibers are first rolled into a column (yarn-like thing) then wrapped around that long dark stick, the spindle. When the spindle spin (thanks to the turning of the great wheel it's attached to, the yarn might just get wrapped around the spindle and not twist, but the key lies in guiding it to the tip of the spindle at an angle. It then "slips off" the spindle's tip, and that causes the fibers to twist, locking them together. It also puts a lot of torque on the thread being spun. That torque is partially relieved by 'backing up the wheel" a little so you can guide the yarn back up to the spindle sheath (so it can easily be pulled off the spindle without losing its spot and thus getting tangled), but also by stretching out the thread and fiber bundle so that more fibers are pulled (with a twist) from the untwisted bundle. It's an experiment you can replicate with a spinning stick (chopstick, drinking straw, whatever), a bit of thread or ribbon (it's very clear how the twist happens with a flat ribbon), and by wrapping the ribbon so that as you turn the spindle, the ribbon "slips off" the end rather than rolling up flat and neat.

    some minor changes that might make things easier for the cotton seed extraction: attach a basket to the frame on the side where the cotton seeds fall so that you don't have to pick them up later, and maybe have a ramp or chute on the side the cotton falls out on to guide it onto the basket on the side where the processed cotton comes out instead of dropping it straight down.

  • @johns6014

    @johns6014

    Жыл бұрын

    It would probably also be good to get some ground braces mounted onto the top of the frame, ideally in both forward and back. The lard helped a lot, but you can tell that there's a lot of force that's still acting on the frame when the crank is turned, and the leg supports that he has now aren't going to work for it in the long run.

  • @The_Foreman

    @The_Foreman

    Only problem with a ramp would be a lack of smooth materials of the right size. Bamboo is probably the closest, but he couldn't weave it else the cotton would catch. Iron could work, but between being pitted and rust, it would still catch (and be a large resource cost). I just don't think a ramp would be worth the extra effort. A seed basket though would probably be fine.

  • @johns6014

    @johns6014

    Жыл бұрын

    @@The_Foreman There **may** be a case for getting a plank as smooth as possible, then polishing it with sand on a river stone. I've never done anything like that before though, so I don't know how well it would work, but it's possible in theory. However, a ramp faces another issue, in that it would catch the seeds as well, which would hinder flow unless they were cleared out, which in turn would require similar effort to what the ramp is meant to negate. A ramp on the output would likely be a good idea, though. It wouldn't need to be smooth, it would just need to provide some transit to the basket, so that the cotton isn't falling into the dirt. Alternatively, a basket underneath both sides of the press would work well.

  • @The_Foreman

    @The_Foreman

    Жыл бұрын

    @@johns6014 A ramp on the output was the initial suggestion. Issue being if it gets caught on anything, the lightweight cotton would then build up and need to be shoved into the receiving plate anyway. However on the note of an input ramp, setting aside the ramp's smoothness, a small gap between the ramp and the rollers would work fine to allow the seeds to drop below.

    2:00 Because there is only one wall to protect the garden, the chickens have two other directions they can go to to get to the garden. The garden should be surrounded on at least three sides if not four. If the garden is fully contained then the only way they can get into it is by flying over, in which case it would be possible to make a small screen up top too, to make it covered by five sides. Time-consuming yes, but fully protected in case there was no other options. It doesn't seem impossible that they are simply walking around the pond and coming from the other direction, or going around the back of the property and walking past the initial fence to get in from the thicker bush and treeline. 37:40 I wonder if he will make a sheet or thin mat to sleep on or to keep himself warm in the colder days. Either one would be good for him. 👍

    Hi buddy. I think to prevent chickens from flying into your garden you need to trim some of their wing feathers so they can't fly over the fence. It is not an operation that causes pain to the animals and the feathers will be able to grow back, but to do so scissors would be needed, I think with a knife it is very difficult. Keep it up, I love your videos.

    Big smile 😊 and applause 👏 you’re indeed primitive as primitively it can be … Excellent just by even growing cotton. When I was 5 I went to visit with my parents in the old country (Caribbean) and the next door house (extremely HUGE) was evacuated (old for ppl living in) the yard: all fruits tree in 1 at each fruits and cotton plants in between with loads of cottons/cottonseeds. I normally snuck away to grab those cotton and love ripping the cottons off until into few day my finger soared. 😂😊I was on a timeout not to venture in that yard again after the older folks told me it’s haunted. It’s was a Dutch estate for slavery during those time before I wasn’t even born yet. But I can say all those fruits trees it’s the original deal everything that grows their is 💯% organic and fresh sweet as a date can be and in my adulthood a gas station family came along and bought it off preform some kind of rituals to cleanse it and chopped every single fruits tree off. I missed that place just for the cotton wools and fruits .. I’ve never taste another fruits that sweet in my life. So keep it primitive Mr. Doung❤🙏🎅🎄🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦

    For a first try, this is really good! You'll want to grease all moving parts where they intersect each other, same as for your cotton gin. You might also want to try brushing out the cotton more evenly in density. It's clumping as you spin it into thread (the clumps are called slubs) because the unspun cotton itself is not evenly distributed through its mass. The denser it is, the more it will tangle quickly rather than evenly. Making carding combs / brushes by hand is very difficult, though, I know! About the only thing I can suggest is maybe using boar bristles and some hoof & rawhide glue to make brushes that you can brush past each other, or carving a couple of combs that are sized to slot past each other, and just taking the time to comb the fibers to an even appearance. (That's a good task to do by the warmth of a fire, but you have to be careful with cotton, because a spark can ruin your work & your day! Wool will smolder and go out, but cotton can catch on fire.)

    WOW!!!! That spindle wheel was wonderful!!! It looks just like those used by Gandhi and his people when they were reviving their nation's economy. Their efforts worked soooooo well that, it's also the same wheel model that appears on their national flag. For your first efforts, you are actually doing very well! I spin cotton every now and then just to retain the knowledge of how to do it. I also initially learned on the spindle, but had trouble getting the hang of it, so, when I do it now, I spin it on my regular wheel. But, because cotton doesn't have the cuticles like wool, the yarn has to rely on twist to stay together. Without sufficient twist, you get yarn with really weak spots that fall apart and can't be successfully used to make any garments, or anything else for that matter. So, when I use my regular wheels, it takes forever to make just a little yarn because you have to wait for sufficient twist. You aren't having trouble with your yarn because of using old tech, but, you just need to loosen the fibers more, because it's way too clumpy, so, before you tease it with your bow, spend more time teasing it with your fingers. Also, the rolls on the sticks are called rolags. Your rolags are too fat, a result of the overly clumpy fibers. You are doing a lot better than you think. You just need more practice.

    @@jimbayler4277 I have watched it twice!! I confess that it was because of the wheel. I try to have a look at the video pics when I get the chance. I haven't been able to watch them all lately because I have a sick dog to care for. Me and my husband adopted a bonded pair of great pyrenees going on 2 years ago. We knew from the beginning that the female had severe hip joint issues, but, they needed a home and I have always wanted the breed, so, I figured we would take them and deal with whatever happened. And, I have to tell you, it's really a job and a half. My girl is 100 lbs, but my boy is 150 lbs. So, I have to get them to agree with whatever I have to do to them, cause, if they really don't want to cooperate, there ain't a lot that can be done. But, they both have bonded with us and would do anything for us, and we would and are doing the same. We recently got new neighbors next door who aren't used to dogs,especially big, loud ones. It's a multi member family with an adult son and his pregnant wife who can't stand the loud barking and is starting to complain about it. We have lots of wildlife around our neighborhood because we live at the base of a national wildlife reserve, so we have coyotes, mountain lions, pigs, etc. that roam the neighborhood during the early morning, which makes the dogs bark like crazy! When that happens, I have to get up and quiet them down. If they get really agitated, then I have to sleep with them so they will relax and go to sleep. I have only slept in my bed a few times in the last few months. I haven't had any time to bother trolls lately. I really miss that. 😢 A couple of times I actually looked for Mindcrap/Missy Cooper, but, really didn't have time to do anything about it even if I found it. My husband, who is finally retired took pity on me and started feeding the dogs their dinner, but I am just taking a few minutes before I have to to down a check on my girl, we are trying to change her pain meds. She was on steroids, but they were reeking havoc with her digestive track, so we has to get her off them, which meant she had to go through withdrawal, and that was several days of really awfulness. So, now I have to see if she can get by on the nonsteroid alternative. Seriously, she's not able to walk without the pain meds, so we have to feed her by hand, and drag her outside so she can do her toilet, which is what I am waiting to do right now. So, I gotta get going. Sorry to complain the whole message. Really great to hear from you!! I am just waiting to see if @P. Skills will actually get a garment made out of the cotton. He did an excellent job with the gin and the wheel, and his spinning was coming along well also. I can't wait to see how he does. See ya.

    @@loveofiber7564 GREAT PYRENEES ?! Holy Moly !! That industrial grade shop vacuum your husband has had his eyes on ?!..... Get it for him for Christmas ! With all that fur, you're gonna need it ! I've always been a dog person (the wife and boy are solidly cat people). But when the boy wanted a dog, I told him "Okay, but you are the one that will need to do "Shovel Patrol" and clean up after it....". We do not have a dog. The cat at least, takes care of its business in the neighbor's yard (Oh ! Wait did I just say that ?!!..... I mean uhhh... Bad me !!) Speaking of Trolls, are they still posting ?! If they are, they are not showing up in my feed !! That would mean that I am being blocked from seeing them somehow. Check out Ceasar Milan the "Dog Whisperer". Your dogs can be trained to bark only when it is appropriate. But you have to establish that you are the Alpha animal in your new "Pack". Yeah, I can relate to the dog's digestive issues. Since I have been having to take blood sugar Meds, I've become Military grade dangerous to be around ! In a group of guys..... I can clear a room faster than any of them ! The wife, however, is less appreciative of my newfound talents.... especially under the covers..... Anyways, back to @P. Skills. Have you ever thought of creating/making a spinning wheel like he just made ?! It looks like it would be fun to try. Shouldn't be too hard (maybe time consuming). If he was able to build one with his resources, we should be able to also. Anyways..... Happy New Years to you and yours !

    @@jimbayler4277 Shop vac isn't needed, because I got the dogs FOR their fur. I am so fiber hound, hence the name "Loveofiber." I have been an avid spinner for over 30 years, and I have spun every kind of fiber that can be spun, and I have knitted, woven, crocheted, a multitude of garments of cotton, silk, wool (of course), flax, artic musk ox - qiviut, llama, alpaca, vicuna, and dog hair. Also, I do have plans for making a wheel, but I really don't enjoy spinning on the type of wheel @P. Skills made. It's a spindle wheel that is best suited for vegetable fibers because it can deliver a high degree of twist that is essential to hold the integrity of fibers that don't have cuticles, such as cotton, silk, flax, etc. Interestingly enough, the wheel @P. Skills made is the same model made and used by Gandhi when he used the production of cotton fiber to revive the Indian economy. It was so effective that the wheel is featured on their national flag. If you hadn't guessed already, I have a passion for fiber crafting. It's a weakness! Really??!!?? Do you really think we were blocked by the trolls??!!?? Is that why I haven't seen any sign of them? WOW!!! That's an honor!! Yes, I have watch literally hours of dog training videos and have had a couple of sets of dog training classes. A feature of the breed is that they are fiercely independent. They were bread to be livestock guardians, and they are intelligent enough to make independent decisions without human involvement. When our boy is outside at night, he periodically walks the perimeter and faces off any invader. Coyotes won't come near us when we walk them, and will run and hide. They will not even take the chance of going past us even in a very wide arch, but will retreat and hide until we're gone. These dogs are amazingly strong and devoted companions. Oh, and Lily's toileting issues are because she's having mobility issues. Without pain killers of sufficient strength, she isn't able to walk. She is essentially paraplegic until we can get this taken care of. BTW, I am a cat person too. We don't have cats cause my husband is allergic. He says that I can have a cat if I really want one, but I know that it wouls kill him, so, dogs it is!! Well, gotta go, dogs are calling for attention/care, and I have to finish making their food. Stay out og trouble, you crazy kid!!

    @@loveofiber7564 : Ahhh..... Man !!! "Stay out of trouble" ?!!! There goes all the fun !! (just kidding) What if I invited you along for the next crazy adventure ? Would I be allowed to get into trouble then ?!!!!!! On the Trolls: I don't know that they have been blocked to our view. I'm just going down the list of possibilities. But after four plus years, suddenly they're gone ?! That makes for more than a bit of curiosity. But since you are not seeing them either, it is very likely they were blocked from the channel entirely. I don't see them as having gotten bored and leaving of their own volition. I doubt you were blocked from seeing them if they are still around. I was the one that went hard and relentless at them. They were nothing if not persistent. I must admit, it is a relief not to have to deal with them. I was allergic to cats also but didn't have a choice in it. I got the "look" that told me "Deal with it buddy !!" On the Dogs: Even independent dogs are still pack animals and have a hierarchy. Either you are the leader, or they are. You have to decide who's going to drive the boat. My dog (pure breed Mutt) from when I was a kid, eventually went with severe hip problems, so I feel for ya. Stay strong. I'm sure they are grateful. ShopVac: Still.... might be a quick way to gather it verses using your clothes to pick it up bit by bit every time you sit down. Real cool that you have worked with all those different donor fibers ! Some of those sound like they are real hard to come by. Though, I suppose there is a network in that interest, that trades materials around. Every other field of interest seems to have a similar network.
