PRIMITIVE SKILLS; Fishing - Survival At Sea

To prepare for my first trip to the sea, I forged more fishing hooks, prepared lines and journeyed to the sea. This is my first trip to the sea, very surprised by everything in the sea, seeing strange creatures, and especially I will survive here for the next few days! Have fun watching the video!

This fish is the Leopard Coral Grouper (Epinephelus polyphekadion), belonging to the Subfamily Epinephelinae in the Grouper family (Serranidae). It is considered a high-quality fish in Japan and is often used in hot pot dishes. It is also delicious when fried. However, there is a crucial fact that must be noted here. This fish may contain Ciguatera toxin, depending on the region where it is caught and the diet it consumes. In case of mild poisoning, one may suffer various symptoms for a week, while severe poisoning can lead to a month-long period of distress. The presence of Ciguatera toxin is influenced by the fish's diet and growth conditions in the specific region. It is essential to verify whether the Leopard Coral Grouper is consumed in the local fishing port where it was caught. If it is being consumed, it is important to inquire about details such as its size (growth status) to ensure safety.

That's very interesting, I'd never heard of that type of fish before. I have seen them on travel cooking shows, though, but I didn't know that some could be poisonous.

I'm happy that you were able to get to the ocean to catch some new types of fish and harvest some salt. I like your new set of fish hooks, they look a little different from the first one that you made. The shellfish you found in English are actually two species known as clams and oysters and yes they're edible. The one that looks like a rock is an oyster and the one that's smooth on the outside is a clam. We don't eat shellfish in my culture, but some people like them fried in butter with herbs. You can also use them in soup. The shellfish are also used in stir fries. You don't need to remove them from the shell because once they're fully cooked, the shells will open up. If the shells don't open up, that means that the animal in the shell has died and you shouldn't eat them because you may get sick. If you open the shells when they're uncooked take note of the smell. If they smell super fishy and the meat is soft, then that also means that they're bad. It also doesn't taste very good. I've tried clams when I was younger, but I don't eat them anymore. The clam meat should be smooth and firm and smell like sea water. Also, you should soak the clams in water overnight so that they can release any sand that they took in when eating, and it'll also help them release their poop. The shells are very pretty and can used to make jewelry which your daughters might like. There's another type of shellfish you might meet called a mussel and they like to cling to the underside of things (i.e. rocks, underside of boats, ships lost at sea and whatever else they find underwater). They have something called a beard, which looks like little hairs coming out of their shell that they use to cling to things. You need a knife to cut them away from the rock, and then you can eat them. However, they must be cooked first, they're not to be eaten raw. Clams are also not usually eaten raw, but when they are they have to be eaten fresh. Some say they taste good with lime juice. Some people like to eat oysters raw, though, with lime juice. Although, they have a very strong, almost briney taste. The big smooth black one you found, with the yellow meat, is another type of mussel. While I've never seen that kind before, it must be an Asian variety, mussels of all types have smooth shells with yellow meat. The shellfish that's oval shaped with the curved edges is a type of snail. It's also edible.

@PrimitiveSkillsnet I forgot that shellfish can also be grilled. The clams, mussels, and oysters can either be grilled unopened or cracked open and grilled with the open side of the shell face up. They taste good with strong flavored spices and herbs.

Glad to see you've adventured out to get some sea salt Duong, as I said last time it is easy to get my friend and will make a great deal of difference to your meals flavour! I am happy to inform you that almost anything from our sea's and oceans is edible matey, they are the best source of food on the planet from Crustaceans-crabs, shrimp, krill, prawns, lobster. Cephalopods-octopus, squid. Molluscs (the shells and snails you found close to the shoreline)-clams, cockles, sea snails, mussels, scallops, oysters. Fish of all types, VERY FEW fish however like the puffer fish for example are deadly (only a certain part of it can be eaten) Aquatic plants-water spinach, kelp and seaweeds they are ALL edible and all extremely delicious! I know it's been a long journey but this will open up a whole new avenue of food types for you and I for one am glad you've gone to explore it! 😁👍 I am curious too my friend, is this the very first time you've seen the sea or been to a beach because your reaction was SO child like and joyful it was AMAZING to see and SO precious!!! I really felt that you were sharing this experience for the VERY FIRST time with us all and I thank you SO VERY MUCH for that matey! It was extremely enjoyable to watch!!! 🤩😍🥰🤩😍🥰

I'm amazed you live there and have never been on the beach or eaten fish, clams, mussels, uni, sea weed or any of the thousands of eatable products from the sea. A couple of thoughts though. It would be good to travel with your dried fish, in case your hooks come up empty. Also the tide comes in and goes out. Setting your camp up too close can mean a really awful surprise when the tide comes in and your stuff is floating. This looks like a nice secluded cove. Your family would make this place even nicer. Make a camp you can bring them back to visit. The shells can be baked and crushed to make lime to wash your building with. As for salt: Strain seawater through a fine sieve or muslin to get rid of any debris, then boil it until 90 per cent of the water evaporates, stirring occasionally. Once it is the consistency of wet sand, pour it into a broad roasting tin or baking sheet, and leave it for five days, stirring once a day. Be well.

This video is staged quite crudely: 1. His farm is located in Ha Giang province, close to the Vietnam - China border. From this place to the nearest sea is also 300km. This distance is impossible to walk. without bringing food. 2. The type of fish he caught was grouper already tied to the fishing line. This type of fish lives in coral reefs or reefs, not on the coast. There are very few fish that big and valuable in Vietnam's coastal areas. I'm sure he bought that fish, the type of fish raised in the lagoon, and caught it on a hook.

Chúc may mắn bẫy.

Usually when someone here goes traveling for a few days, especially going camping (making a camp somewhere middle of nowhere,) we bring a small bed with us. We have a soft bed mattress that we lay down on the floor when we get ready to sleep and something warm to cover us for the night. This mattress is usually soft enough that in the morning, you can roll up the bed and covers into a small roll, tie it together and tie it to your backpack, bag, or whatever it is you can attach it to. Usually this makes it easier on us, as we never have to make a new bed when we go camping. Usually this bed would be made at home, in preparation for long travels. Usually this also means we bring lots of food with us, to make sure we have something to eat when we arrive to our destination, being lots of drinking water too. Good luck Duong, maybe next time you could bring some more things with you to make sure your camp not only goes successful but comfortable? :)

I am so happy for you. I hope you make a ton of salt and maybe make a camp permeant enough to revisit. The comments by @zaarkhananal7165 is very informative. Cảm ơn Đường vì chủ đề này!😁👍😁 Whether you walked all the way to the sea or used the train or bus or such is not relevant. Because the whole point is that all your videos are about what one can achieve with primitive skills, regardless of location. What one can do with them near the sea is a wonderful extension of the concept. Thank you, Đường, for this topic! 😁👍😁

I'm surprised this was your first trip to the sea! I hope you enjoyed it lots! I hope you collected a bunch of sea shells (18:23) as those could be lots of fun to make stuff out of! You can crush seashells and add them as fertilizer to your plants. You can also use crushed seashells as a potting mix (instead of soil) for plants that need more drainage in their growing medium. You can use seashells as decoration, use them to create necklaces, make windchimes, place seashells around the garden for decoration, attach them to windows, pots, doors. You can use seashells to hold ink, hold wax or condensed dyes. Most of the time seashells are either used in agriculture to provide more nutrients to plants, or used as decorations.

Duong, because there are tides on the beach you can do fishing using a dragline. You wait for the tide to go out and then attach a rope between two heavy rocks, and then you tie several strings along the rope with fishing hooks and bait. You then wait for the tide to come in and then go out again and you can check all the hooks for fish. You could also try making a gillnet, which you set out in a similar manner tying it to heavy rocks, but you attach floats to the top edge of the net so that it stretches the net out in the water. Tying them to heavy rocks does mean there is a risk they will wash away.

Fantastic you made it to the sea. I live in nz and watching your video made me realize that we take our trips to beach for granted!! We only live a few minutes away from many beaches. We recognize a few of the shellfish. The shellfish attached to the rocks are mussels and similar shape one may be oysters and they are safe to eat. Looking forward to watching more of your adventures!!

21:20 It's oysters! It is also called sea milk. It is delicious! If fried foods become available as a cooking option, please try them! Depending on the environment, it may be possible to eat raw meat, but since there is a risk of norovirus infection, it is best to heat it thoroughly before eating it. 23:49 It is probably a type of [Takaragai] (scientific name: Cypraeaidae, English name: cowry or cowrie). There are collectors who collect beautiful shells, and in some regions it was used as currency and decoration in the past. It seems that it has been used in this way since ancient times in Japan, which is why the Japanese name is [Takaragai], which means treasure (Takaramono) + shellfish (Kai). 24:00 This is probably a type of [Akagai] (scientific name: Anadara broughtonii, English name: Bloody clam). In addition to its unique crunchy texture and strong aroma, it has a distinctive appearance when the shell is opened. In Japan, it is mainly eaten as sashimi and used for sushi, but it is difficult to disassemble. This can carry the hepatitis A virus, so if you don't have the expertise, it would be best to heat it or use it as fishing bait. The flesh is much harder than oysters, so it may be more durable as fishing bait. 27:21 Is this a type of [Igai] (English name: Korean mussel or hard-shelled mussel, scientific name: Mytilus coruscus)? Although it is not widely distributed in Japan, it seems to be eaten in various ways in the production area, such as grilling, boiling, and deep-frying. If you don't feel comfortable eating any kind of shellfish, one option might be to dry it in the sun, then boil it and use it as a broth. Some saltwater fish, including these members, have sharp spines on their fins and tails, but these spines are often poisonous, so be careful. Please be careful of dangerous creatures such as sea urchins and poisonous creatures and enjoy!

The other shells has flesh inside them we called them mussels but great for bait. The other ones might be a oyster or a pip and the other ones unknown great for bait. I don't eat those at all. Good for cooking . Fresh ones. Some that you opened up I never seen before. Love your first time at the sea. Love your tutorials and Channel ❤😊

Hello! You found some oysters, scallops, and mollusks that are really tasty. Some people eat them raw, but I like them better lightly sautéed or poached: try not to overcook them. Also, you might want to find some shallow hollows in the rocks where you can collect some seawater that will evaporate in the sunlight, leaving you with salt crystals.

Duong… It was nice to see you forging fishing hooks and crafting natural fiber cordage for fishing line. These are things you should always have prepared and kept in a fishing kit along with your fish, (spear), gun. But other than that, your preparations and packing for an exciting trip to the sea, a place you said that you have never been to before, even since it seems it was within walking distance, hmmm….., was very poorly and haphazardly planned. Your main reason, I assume, was to go to the sea to harvest sea salt. You have lots of fish in your pond to harvest, preserve, cook and eat. I can’t see you drying a bunch of sea fish to bring back to the farm, but you could, if you know they are safe to eat. You didn’t prepare or pack for that. It was just to give you a food source while at the sea to live on while harvesting sea salt. You could have brought with you on this long journey to the sea, some already prepared rice wrapped in leaves, because you only took 1 little pot, just 1. I guess thats ok if the pot will only be used for boiling sea water for the salt. Because to get an amount of salt to make this trip worth doing, you would need to get started boiling sea water as soon as you could get a fire going and rocks set up to set the pot on. Boil, boil, boil! And what about a container to bring more sea water to the pot to boil? If you have never been to the sea, as you said, but you just cooked and ate the first fish you caught, not knowing if it’s safe to eat? Hmmm… Since you didn’t harvest any sea salt in this video, I assume this will be a series of videos on harvesting sea salt, and that we don’t see you sick and throwing up from eating a bad fish in the next video. I hope that in the next 1-2 videos that you are able to actually boil off enough sea water to get 3-4 cups of salt, enough to fill a bamboo tube container, enough to make that long walk to the sea, where you said you have never been before, worthwhile. The sea salt will certainly be nice to have on hand for preserving and seasoning your food harvests. : )
