The only thing I can say about back rolling is that it will smoosh into the nooks and crannies in the drywall texture where as spraying it’ll stay on top of it may leave a little pinholes you’d have to spray pretty heavy. I’ve done it too late before and showed up spray lines after the finish so I always go heavy and back roll now

Chris are you able to spray the topcoat without back rolling or do you roll the final coat? I just primed drywall (sprayed) and sprayed the first coat eggshell and it looked a little streaki so I just rolled the final coat eggshell and it is way better finish streak wise at least ... but still not perfect or is that just the way it is that you can’t get glossy paints to be streak free? Is there always a little bit of a unevenness ?

Just a thought, if you back roll the primer you don't have to dust unless its excessive ( i use a 24 inch floor broom). If the primer is too thick i cut the primer 10% with water. I always back roll the primer :) Different strokes for different folks :)

If I'm correct, the mopping was done BEFORE he sprayed the PVA primer in another video... Where he showed prepping the walls before priming.. He mentioned that he mopped the walls because they were smooth and didn't have any texture on them... and they were sanded... not sure why he included that insert with this video..

so I read some of the comments about back rolling so I thought I would put in my 2 cents from being a painter almost 20 years... yes you can just spray the primer, yes you can just spray the paint finish too, but.... primer won't seal as good just sprayed also depending on your primer it might flash spray strokes.. same with paint gonna look real 'sprayee' if you just spray the finish not to mention in most cases it will touch up like crap. some flats will touch up fine but anytime you take a roller to a sprayed finish to touch up your pretty much gonna see it. He's using a pva so those usually are very dead flat & will not flash at all. He's also doing high production work & a lot of painters will just spray everything on new construction, primer, then flat on all the walls & ceilings. Why because it's quick & you have to make $ & sometimes there's multiple homes after one another but its not the best way to apply. If you spray & backroll all your primer in it will feel like a job well done & be noticeably more solid I can guarantee that, then spray & back roll your finish paint & you'll be looking like a real painter that cares more about quality then $. That's just my experience with it

Hello Chris great work! I really appreciate your videos! I know this is an old video so I don't know if you will respond to my question but I'm curious about something. I'm priming the new drywall in my house and I've heard stories that you're supposed to sand and then apply another coat of primer and then sand and then paint is this true or not? I'm using the Sherwin-Williams good primer that you use is one coat enough and do I have to sand after priming before finish paint? By the way I am rolling not spraying. Thanks and take care!

No offense, but I can prime a 4 story townhome ceilings and walls (and backrolled) in 4 and a half hours. 2 guys. We do a light mist of pva on the ceilings and closets, then prime the walls with a good coat and backroll, then after that's just about dry, we spray the ceilings and closets with their desired color. Graco 1090 at full pressure using a 517 tip. This method you're doing is functional, but lacks production....In new residential construction of course. I've been doing NC for years, I've learned to find the fastest and most productive ways that deliver results. Up your speed and use a bigger tip. Let the machine do the work. and backroll! use a 14 inch roller. Spray the roller with material on the wall and get it nice and primed before backrolling.

Chris is it really necessarily to back roll when your spraying 1)PVA? 2)Finish? 3)Stucco? Sometimes I do sometimes I don't just depends on the feel and look I have if I think it's absorbing well and looks smooth I don't bother back roll is this a misteak?

We do not always back-roll, most times we don't. It just depends on the situation, we do back-roll stucco

So in a new construction the paint starts after the windows are installed and before any door or floor is installed. Do you guys come back at the very end for final coat or touching?

In terms of spraying with an airless, do you find it necessary to back roll any of the coats, either primer or topcoat?

  • @Idahopainter

When you say spray a light coat, what are we looking for? What are the signs it's on too light or too heavy? Thanks much

Usually people don’t want to spend that much money on paint so they aren’t looking for something like a heavy done coat but of course you want to hit everything and not leave it light enough when you can see the difference color between the paint and drywall

Do you put any tint in your primers or white? I've heard of some painters using some black for extra hide.
