Life is so hard for sub adult male lions. Its heartbreaking to see at times but when those boys leave the pride and form a coalition ( hopefully the six of them all together) they will be a force to be reckoned with. A formidable coalition. Great sighting MalaMala, thank you.

Holy dooley, those Kambula lionesses are terrifying when they get cranky! 😳🤕 I gather (I hope) those adorable baby cubbies skedaddled once family mealtime degenerated into the inevitable brawl. I see tough days ahead for the subadult males but at least when they do go it should make it easier for the rest of the pride to feed itself. When the subadults came in to feed, I saw one young cub go off to the left and another go off to the right. But there was still one in between the zebras hind legs. I didn't see if that one got out of the way and hope it wasn't killed. Learned a lot in this video. Thank you!

Thank you for sharing your video. That was a great sighting! I love the small one watching the adult eating: so cute! But the best part it the "action" among adults. During lockdownyour videos help! I miss South Africa and your beautiful animals!

I never realized a lion pride had a hierarchy. It was very evident here but I had never seen it before so acutely vivid. The sub adult males are trained by this sort of behavior in order to provide their own pride a strong coalition, so it shouldn't have surprised me. It was also a bit humorous to see the cubs unsure of the moving zebra flank. Sad, also that two cubs were killed earlier and the mother was willing to allow it without a fight.

The sub-adults will try to bully their mother/aunts and little cub relatives so the lionesses usually have to lay down the law and warn the young subbies, once the new cubs are introduced to the pride. Anyway, soon those boys will have to bid adieu to their natal pride and take their "show" on the road.

it was to be expected ...... now that they have young to feed, it will become complicated for the subs-adults .... they are too numerous for a single carcass .... they may be this split in two ..... but I hope they will be able to stay a little longer with the family💕

Thank you for sharing this fascinating video. As others have pointed out, the dynamics with sub adult males is fascinating and sad. I have wondered about this Kambula pride, because it is so large and perhaps unsustainable at that size, so I was not entirely surprised to hear the story about the infanticide. These animals live such brutal lives, but that is what has forged them into such magnificent creatures, even though their stories can leave us with such sadness. I wonder where those males will go once they are forced out of the pride. Life is, no doubt, harder for them outside of Kruger and the reserves around Kruger, but they will have a lot of territorial males standing in their way outside of Kambula land. Wonder if they are too closely related to the Marthly lionesess, or if it would be too dangerous to stay that close regardless?

They are indeed related - second cousins in fact. Kruger and the surrounding reserves are all part of the same ecosystem - only us humans who know where the boundaries are. Life is the same for them - wether they are in Kruger or on MalaMala.

That's a massive pride. Lions eats very slow, those that didn't get a spot at the table probably have to Wait for awhile.

These videos are amazing! I don't enjoy the actual kill. I don't watch it. But seeing the lions eating the kill and dealing with each other is fascinating. Lions have always been my favorite wild animal. They are wild and raw, smart and loving and the perfect killers! Thank you for these excellent videos that take us into their lives! 🇺🇸

Hi Barbara. It's impossible to say. But with 5 sub adult males and 1 slightly younger one due to leave the pride - the pressure to split will be reduced. But it's still very possible. (I think you can call this a non-answer 😉)

They've been on MalaMala - spending a bit of time with the pride and they've met the new cubs - also spending a lot of time patrolling.

Poor young males. They need to learn to hunt for themselves now. I hope the new cubs live and survive. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

Yep, time for the boys to go form their own coalition! They seem to be fierce enough to one day take over a pride for themselves. Maybe they’ll stick together. Their safety & power in numbers. With lions being endangered, it’s surprising that they would kill family members cubbies. But I guess they don’t know that. 😊. Thank you for another great video!

Hello MalaMala team, despite the sobering news of the "culling" of the cubs 😥 , this is a superb video. Up close and personal, it feels as though I was right there in the midst of the pride. I completely agree with several of the comments that the audio was incredible and oh so wild! We'll never fully understand why cubs are killed within a pride by a female. Did she realise that her babies would have a better chance of getting more food if there were fewer cubbies? So much to contemplate ... Thank you and God bless as always, xxx.

It is not common at all! Difficult to say exactly why she did it but she was the ranking member.

That’s what we see happening as the pride gets too big. Too many mouths to feed and tension arises. Perhaps, a breakaway pride or splinter group is forthcoming? How old are the male sub adults now? Are they old enough to be successful as nomadic males? It would be sad to see them thrown out of the pride and not able to fend for themselves and just perish..
