I think it´s my fault, I´ve been googling Matthew Macfadyen like crazy these past few weeks. Ever since I rewatched Pride and Prejudice from 2005. Sorry, not sorry;) By the way, did you know there is an american ending and a UK ending to the film? Much prefer the UK ending haha. Even if they don´t kiss in the end, it´s still hotter. Bliss Clair, At the date at which the movie was made, people in general knew far less about historic fashion than was known from the 1980s onwards when British television started producing lots of series of Classic novels and plays. The clothes of the period of Pride and Prejudice were simple and plain, by comparison with early costumes of the 1700s, and later costumes of the Victorian era. So, to comply with a public expectation that a "period" movie would show beautiful, romantic dresses, Pride and Prejudice was made in the same sort of costumes that had been an important feature of Gone with the Wind, which had been enormously popular.

This is a good point but also remember that Darcy is talking about Lizzy being "handsome enough to tempt me" is a reference to social class. The Bennet's are beneath him socially and the common thought of the day was that if a girl was very pretty it could make up for lack of fortune or a lower standing. His comments on her looks is more about how she isn't attractive enough for him to lower himself socially, not even to dance with. This scene is to show just how much he overcomes his own prejudice to eventually ask Lizzy to marry him.

  • @SarahEMorin
    @SarahEMorin3 жыл бұрын

I like most of the reactions but Jennifer Ehle's is my favorite. Being hurt at an insult is a natural reaction, and we see that with The Lizzie Bennet Diaries and Keira Knightley. All three of the above blend in a nice amount of humor to their responses, which is accurate to the book. But with Ehle, what I love is how quickly and determinedly she is able to transmute the insult into humor. You see this beautiful moment on her face as she's in shock, not quite sure how she should take this. And a moment later, she's like, "Dude, what do I care? I just met this guy. He's a stranger to me and his opinions don't matter." Even in her recounting of the story later to Jane we can see there's no hurt left, just humor. This strong sense of self was one of the things that always drew me to this version of Lizzie. Knightley's Lizzie and Lizzie in The Lizzie Bennet Diaries both use humor to overcome the slight, but both of these I think are lashing out to wound back. Their hackles are up. Ehle's Lizzie just kinda lets it roll off her. Again, hurt is natural, but I admire the ability to let slights roll off you more. I also like Colin Firth's Darcy the most in this scene (although Matthew McFadyen is a close second) because of his reactions. There is a miniscule smile on Firth's face and he acknowledges Bingley is enjoying himself with Jane. Remember Bingley and Jane just met so Darcy feels no fear of Bingley being truly attached. And I love when Darcy sees Lizzie walk away and talk to Charlotte and giggle. What is he thinking? "Oh crap, she overheard me, I'm a jerk?" Or "Huh, that response is unusual. Intriguing?" Or "Crap, they're laughing at me?" Which would fit nicely into the book again, as later Lizzie pinpoints his best punishment in a conversation with Caroline - to laugh at him. I enjoy that we as an audience can't quite read him, leaving us to conjecture. Just like Lizzie.

Elena, It is about historical mannerisms. In the book, the girls discuss a young lady in who Mr Wickham has an interest and they say "She smiles too much." This is a reflection of the date. Keira not only smiles too much, she opens her mouth wide when she laughs. And she wrinkles her nose and giggles in a babyish way. These mannerisms were common in girls of Keira's age. They would NEVER have been socially acceptable in Jane Austin's day. Keira should have been TOLD by the person who was employed to get the context right. No-one would expect a young person to KNOW these thing without studying some social history,

Providence Iris, I don't agree. She is "barely tolerable". The reason for this lies in the directing and in particular, in the lack of briefing of the actress about the social aspects of the period which she is playing. When she brushes Darcy aside with a clever comment at the end of this clip, she does it with a large, smarty, cutesy smile, like a cheeky schoolgirl being smart in front of her friends. Elizabeth would not have delivered that line with a wide smile. If you watch the whole movie, you see that Keira smiles and laughs with her mouth open and uncovered, several times. Elizabeth would never do that. I would not expect a modern young actress like Keira Knightley to know that laughing loudly and smiling widely was rude. She needed to be told. The fact that she does this, AND wrinkles her nose in a cutesy way means that she s NEVER in character. "Cute" was a concept that didn't exist at Jane Austen's time. But at the period at which Keira was a teenager,"acting in a cutesy, little-girl manner was extremely fashionable. So girls shrugged, wrinkled their noses, wiggled when they walked, giggled, and looked "adorable". NONE of that is right for Lizzie.

@@MandyJMaddison I disagree with you. A character is to be interpreted as the actor and director see fit. The same character will never match perfectly with the book as the movie. It's why there are so many different versions of the story, no single one will be perfect. Matthew MacFayden was an amazing Mr. Darcy and Kiera Knightley was the perfect Elizabeth to his Darcy. What matters is not how the movie compares to the book, but how enjoyable the movie itself is and the vision of the director.

  • @MandyJMaddison

Someone Odd, Part of the CHALLENGE of making a movie set in an historic period is creating an aura of that date. If that is not important, then you make a spoof, like Pirates of the Caribbean, or set the story in the Modern era like Romeo + Juliet. The fact that Keira played Eliza laughing with her mouth wide open, and wriggling and giggling in a manner that WAS briefly fashionable around 2000. is not Keira's CHOICE. It is Keira's IGNORANCE. She had no way of knowing how the part ought to be played, unless she was appropriately briefed, about how a woman of that period would act, and appropriately directed. Keira is a capable actress, not an historian of the Georgian period of British Social History. She was perfectly capable of playing Lizzi Bennet with the right sort of mannerisms, but only if she was properly informed. Because Keira was NOT informed, this movie has already become DATED. It is dated because of the way that Keira plays it. As for Matthew being amazing as Darcy..... he wasn't. He walked into the ball looking VERY AVERAGE. His first appearance at Netherfield Society should have set him apart from every other man there by his bearing, his dignity, his tailoring, and an IMMACULATE shave. Understand that Darcy would never have appeared in public with stubble on his chin. He was shaved by his valet, with what is called a "cut-throat razor". If his shave was not PERFECT he would have found a new valet. Think of Darcy as a CEO, not as a shy young man, who has been invited somewhere where he doesn't know people. Think of him as a person who has the Royal Princes to stay, when they want to go hunting.

MandyJMaddison Ah, thank you. I could never quite put my finger on why Keira Knightly rubbed me the wrong way in that movie, even though she is a wonderful actress otherwise. ‚She‘s just not English enough‘, was the best way, I could describe it...without being able, to quite explain what I mean by that. The subtleties of her mannerisms just aren’t quite right. But then, that movie committed a couple of other, very obvious faux pax, anyway. Like that scene, where Jane is recovering from her cold at Mr. Bingley‘s house and he just enters her bedroom, with her laying in bed in her freaking nightgown. I‘m no historian, but I can’t imagine, a well bred young man would just enter an unmarried young women’s bedroom like that. With barely acquainted people, that would be somewhat shocking even today!

So many people are comparing 1995 and 2005 as if they were the only versions. The 1980 version’s soundtrack suffers from the conventions of the time, but its dialogue is the most accurate and its Darcy is the most intriguing. I can look at it and feel like I’m watching a manifestation of the book, whereas in the other versions, Darcy is more like a standard romantic hero than he is like the complex character Austin created. I really enjoyed this 😌 it’s amazing how differently different eras and cultures imagine one ‘universal’ story. My faves? Bride & Prej. And I also love Bridget Jones... but the best ‘straight’ adaptation? Colin And Jennifer. No competition. The longer mini series format allowed for so much more detail, wistful glances and time to enjoy the somewhat mad caricatures of Mrs Bennet, Lady Catherine and Lydia. (Although Maya’s Cobra Dance is pretty astounding 🐍)

i think I like the 1995 version of this scene best, mostly because instead of being insulted Elizabeth just finds Darcy's snobbery funny and laughs at him. I mean, i like the 1995 mini-series best anyway, because I feel like it's able to be better paced and include more of the story, but I like Elizabeth's characterisation in it the best as well.

I think that the 1980 & 1995 versions were truer to the book. But I am truly impressed you knew all these versions. I do, but I am a total Austen freak. Still the feeling of capturing the people not just reading the words like students in class learning about it but not getting it, makes any version more enjoyable. And some of the inspired by versions get that best

As someone who read the book first (read it in school and college before watching any adaptations), I saw all the versions and the 1995 one was the most accurate. The older ones got the costumes wrong and the 2005 one was just horrific in terms of etiquette portrayal. In once scene Lizzy just storms off the dinner table which never happened in the book nor would happen in that age.

I saw the film first so it would seem that I would like that one better. However, after seeing the 1995 series, it was clearly superior. The way he looks at Elizabeth as she passes by him, you can see that he was already in love with her. Colin Firth does an excellent job.

My favorite version is the 1995 version. They nailed a lot of the dialogue and the light background and their costumes seemed so greatly fitting. Colin Firth's portrayal of Darcy was very much on par with how he is in the book. I gave the 2005 version a shot a few years ago and I was less than impressed. Darcy was incredibly boring and definitely didn't look the part. The backgrounds and the costumes were so dark and Elizabeth speaking to Darcy and her asking him about the dance was so far off the reality of what would have happened at that time. And the way they had done Kiera Knightley's hair, even for that assembly, with her bangs, made her look unkempt like she had only just run through a field to get there. Women definitely didn't do that back in those days. They should have done her hair in a way that was neat and tidy and had curls framing her face, not bang. 1995 Pride and Prejudice for the win! ❤️

I also prefer the 1995 version over the romanticized modernized version of 2005. In the first place, Pride and Prejudice is not a romance novel but more of a social commentary about the life of the landed gentry and aristocracy. It portrayed the necessity of surviving financially during the time of Jane Austen; hence, the preoccupation on finding a rich husband and even a rich wife. Plus, the 2005 version made the Bennets look like lower class country folks because the movie wanted to portray a "poor" woman catching a rich man against the expected norms of society. The truth is they all belonged to the same social milieu- or they would not be able to mix in society. They did not work for a living and had maids and laborers. The difference lay in the size of the estate and number of servants. The Bennets had a smaller estate and fewer servants compared to the Bingleys and the Darcys. Plus, daughters could not inherit the estate of their father as stated by law. It just so happened that the elder Bennet sisters were able to find love and wealth in their husbands.

The 2005 version wasn't inaccurate so much as compressed into a two hour film. And in that regard, compressed better than most do which usually hack like the 4th, 5th & 6th Harry Potter films hacked away at their books. That did unfortunately show more of the romance than other versions, but I also expected nothing else from Hollywood. Agreed with everything else though. My favorite version was the 1995 version until I recently found (and finished in two days) The Lizzie Bennet Diaries.

The 1995 BBC version is the closest to the book, the most faithful to the period, and has by far the best casting and acting. The 2005 version actually has a PIG running through the Bennet family home. Darcy's declaration of love in the rain at the folly is pure Hollywood and it pales in comparison to the restrained (and far more believable, given the time period) romance of the 1995 version. Colin Firth IS Darcy...and Keira Knightley, while very pretty by modern standards, would have been considered emaciated in the Regency Era, more like Miss Anne de Bourgh than Miss Elizabeth Bennet.

We all know what it feels like, when a friend drags you to the disco when you’re not in the mood. I guess that’s why Darcy spouts off. I think the 1995 version captures that best, because the’ve kept most of the original dialogue. The others make the insult more personal to Lizzy, rather than as a general disdainful comment towards the social setting in general. 'Come, Darcy,' said he, 'I must have you dance. I hate to see you standing about by yourself in this stupid manner. You had much better dance.' 'I certainly shall not. You know how I detest it, unless I am particularly acquainted with my partner. At such an assembly as this it would be insupportable. Your sisters are engaged, and there is not another woman in the room whom it would not be a punishment to me to stand up with.' 'I would not be so fastidious as you are,' cried Bingley, 'for a kingdom! Upon my honour, I never met with so many pleasant girls in my life as I have this evening; and there are several of them you see uncommonly pretty.' 'You are dancing with the only handsome girl in the room,' said Mr. Darcy, looking at the eldest Miss Bennet. 'Oh! she is the most beautiful creature I ever beheld! But there is one of her sisters sitting down just behind you, who is very pretty, and I dare say very agreeable. Do let me ask my partner to introduce you.' 'Which do you mean?' and turning round, he looked for a moment at Elizabeth, till catching her eye, he withdrew his own and coldly said, 'She is tolerable; but not handsome enough to tempt me; and I am in no humour at present to give consequence to young ladies who are slighted by other men. You had better return to your partner and enjoy her smiles, for you are wasting your time with me.' Mr. Bingley followed his advice. Mr. Darcy walked off; and Elizabeth remained with no very cordial feelings towards him. She told the story, however, with great spirit among her friends; for she had a lively, playful disposition, which delighted in any thing ridiculous.
