ah, the commentators in the old days. they likely figured nobody was watching, outside of japan. they said gary goodridge was the world arm wrestling champion. and that he had beaten 1000 competitors in one hour. amazing. he beat 16.66 opponents every minute, nonstop, for one hour. so 3.6 seconds per opponent, with no time to spare in between opponents. amazing feat.
Always love classic Bas Ruten commentary.

Pride was awesome! Four major events/organizations that shaped modern mama are Vale Tudo, UFC, PRIDE and Pancrase.
The beginning feels like a 90s video game lmao
Rickson was terrifying, but he looked so damn goofy with his deadpan stare and robot slide.
Commentary is gold
😮 I Like THIS!! 💪
Gary Goodridge said Pride 1 event was 90 percent fixed. Pride 2 was 70 percent, and by Pride 10, 10 percent was fixed. So Interesting to watch it again, knowing most of these fights were fixed, and you can see now how some of the fighters didn't even resist submission attempts.
@FailedBard

I can't even remember the channel it was on now, but I watched a video recently on the history of match fixing in early Japanese MMA and saw that clip there, so watched this trying to figure out which of the fights were legit. That head kick on the ground couldn't have been pre-planned, but most everything else, in viewing with that historical hindsight, was pretty suspect.
@VultureLivesAgain

Goodridge was massively exaggerating. He's also suffering from dementia (seriously). I wouldn't take his word as gospel. There were a few fixed fights, but it's nowhere near what he claimed.

My coach spent time with a black belt who said most of the Japanese fighters went in thinking they were wrestling a work. At no point did they imagine body lock, trip, flail and death.
That restart in the Rickson Gracie fight didn't make any sense. So if Takada grabbed the rope in the corner like that anytime they would have restarted it over and over? Was that a ref mistake or a rule at the time?

Should've given him Igor Vovchanchyn, Mark Kerr (he was offered) or even the pre-Gracie Killer Sakuraba and see if he could really hang in there.
