Ben takes millions in Big Oil money to produce propaganda which protects their corporate interests and actively harms people. Why should a conversation be jovial with him? This looks like Alex is taking Ben’s arguments about atheism seriously, even though all of his statements about atheism conclude with “atheism leads to the worst predations imaginable.” That’s not an fun little argument about theology. Ben clearly thinks atheists are bad people who should be punished and prejudiced against. Alex should not dignify him by acting like his theological arguments are his real point. Alex is giving a propagandist exactly what he wants: to be seen as something other than a grifter.

The fact that Alex is going out there and really bringing intellectual atheistic debate out is so commendable. It's hard to debate. A lot of the time it's just whoever lambasts the most. I loved Hitchens, but he often would suffer from meanderingly speaking and not actually answering the issues presented before him. He also was deeply dogmatic and closed minded about a lot of topics, like the Iraq war or communism. Alex, on the other hand, is a very critical person who avoids trapping himself in dogma. I think he is exactly what the atheists of the world need to refine debate and bring atheism to light.

@@sturmgewehr4471 I'm not sure I understand what you're getting at. "Something you do. A set of rituals, actions, and behaviors" seems to be a very imprecise definition. Like having a morning ritual where you drink coffee is religious? I don't think you mean that. Perhaps you mean to say that many atheists are dogmatic? If that's the case, it sounds like you mean dogmatic towards just, like, a variety of things in life. That's a very broad claim, and I don't understand its point. Do you mean atheists follow some sort of atheistic dogma? To that I would say there is no atheistic dogma to follow. There are a variety of moral philosophies that many atheists might follow, perhaps they are dogmatic about it, but religious folk often also follow moral philosophies, and not all atheists care about philosophy. The purpose of your comment confuses me. My interpretation of what Ben Shapiro was saying is that atheists are more candid in their disbelief, and less likely to have doubts or see reason, than religious folk. To me it came off as an attempt to make atheists seem unreasonable and illogical. If I am incorrect in my interpretation then I apologize.

The problem is there’s not really a great definition of what religion is. “Religion is a new term”, and so we inevitably end up just pointing to certain facets of certain traditions and then universalising them. There are different flavours of atheism, and while I was an atheist I found it often came with certain ideologies like humanism, and in occasional cases nihilism. Certain atheists, depending on their circumstances can seem to emulate certain traits are conventionally attributed towards religious people, like dogmatism as you say. Integral to being an atheist is a world view that is contrary to many of the views that humanity has held since the Palaeolithic period, and so it can be expected to also emerge with worldviews, opinions, political opinion and behaviours. So in someone saying atheism can be exhibited like a religion, where SOME become militant. Yes, I think that analogy is fitting.

  • @SlimyPenguin24

@@user-gt5ec5bz5ryes, religious does mean the first point you understood from the comment. A morning coffee routine is religious. It would be perfectly reasonable to say "I religiously drink coffee every morning" with the intention clearly being that they do it regularly, no matter what. Religion is following the rules because that's just what you do. I'm Christian but would never call myself religious. I don't do things because there's a list of rules I follow. I do things because praying, reading the Bible and other spiritual interactions with Jesus (which I am fully aware you will probably pass off as wishful thinking) help me to know Him better, and I want to live in a way that benefits that relationship. Kind of how I will talk to my wife and do what would make her happy in that moment instead of writing down a list of actions she likes and carrying them out the same way daily.

I am really curious to see Alex. In debates he is always very respectful, a very good strategy to involve and convince the doubters and those on the fence. And, as a recent graduate, he is always very academical, always looking for very refined arguments very far from the gut. I am skeptical about his performance against an aggressive debaters often resorting to zingers and one liners trying to ridicule more than to engage. Those "debates" with Piers Morgan were definitely not _great,_ although he was defending positions extremely favorable and easy to defend. He was often silenced by Piers just interrupting him to question his personal character and credibility instead of tackling the argument. This is one very hard argument - if religion is good for society is a very nuanced topic. I hope to see that he grew also as a debater!

Speaking of. Just the other day he was asked on a q&a that since linguistically he accepts " mother" as a term that can change socially even though it specifically refers to a biological process (ie mother is someone who birthed a child, but we also accept adoptive mothers as mothers) then why doesn't he accept this with the term "woman" and he completely dodged the question. Giving random talking pojnts that didn't actually address the question, and in the few times it did, they didn't refute it at all since it still applied to "mother" But of course, he was in a stage against a student with a time limit. As a Christian, I am absolutely pumped that these two young philosophical heavyweights are wrestling this topic together! There is no question that Alex is my favourite atheist to listen to at the moment. He brings a sincerity and authenticity to the table, whilst Ben also brings the same. Both of these men are rhetorically and topically equipped and solid. I am excited for this!

Defining Shapiro as a "philosophical heavyweight" is an insult to both philosophers and heavyweight lifters at the same time. Kudos for this all-encompassing insult. We like to remember the time when Ben replied to a question about sea levels rising by suggesting that people living on the coastlines could simply sell their houses before being flooded by the sea. We also like to remember Hbomberguy tearing through a wall with the ominous question "to whom, Ben? Fucking Acquaman?" Truly one of the finest thinkers of our time

"Let's say, hypothetically" one of the worst sentences his mouth can ever speak since it's usually followed by a completely unrealistic hypothesis you are asked to consider seriously. Most of the times the right answer to this kind of questioning coming from Ben is "have you ever lived among humans?"

I don't think that he actually is going for his throat. That's pretty much a very easy statement to answer. No.1 it's possible that Ben's answering this from appealing to a utilitarian standpoint meaning that even though he's a deontologist he can say that as a utilitarian, we ought keep religion because it gives an overall benefit towards humanity. No. 2 or the pretty obvious remark that no one person can follow a one moral framework only. People often fight among each other the kinds of moral framework they are using as if pretending that if you're a deontologist then that's the only moral principle you get to live with, which is hardly the case. It's possible to follow more than one moral framework and that's what humans have been doing for the rest of their history.

@@someguyontheinternet2729 basically you are saying "you can be X until it suits your agenda, once it is not useful you can change your position to a complete opposite one without problems" Ah, this unknown thing that are principles. Keep a position until you can gain from it, as soon as a problem in this position is highlighted switch to a different one instead of recognising the fault in your position. Sorry, it doesn't work this way; if you agree with a philosophycal position you should strive to approach it with all the aspects in your life. If one aspect is not fitting well for any reason you should try finding a more suitable way of living, in philosophy as in life there are no "exceptions confirming the rule", there are only bad rules not finding application in reality

@@fabiometalsinger that's a strawman, I'm saying that humans are complicated and that our moral principles vary, are you seriously going to suggest to me that an individual can only adhere to one moral principle and only that moral principle all his life? Let's assume that you're a utilitarian, does that mean that every moral decision you do is only based on that principle? Don't you have certain moral beliefs that are also deontoligical? It's not "changing your position" to have other moral frameworks. Some people have a more deontoligical bent or leaning while still holding certain utilitarian principles (and vice versa). In theory an individual should only stick and be consistent with one, but real life doesn't work like your ethics textbook.

@@someguyontheinternet2729 I get what you are saying but in this case we are not talking about everyday life and the complexity of one's decisions. Here we are looking at a debate where two philosophical positions clash; if one of the two participants is constantly getting the other in a position where he is denying the core tenants of his philosophy maybe that specific philosophical position it's kind of shit. I do have a strong moral framework according to which I act in my everyday life and I can assure you, I'd never fold one of its core principles like Ben is doing with his answer to Alex's question. And I'm a normal guy, not one of the main defenders of a way of living which is honestly abhorrent: live your life according to my religious rules or be crushed under the state heel. Get fucked and start living YOUR life according to YOUR principles, don't worry what others do in their lives, shitman

There probably wouldn't be any issue with religion if it weren't for the dogma, the personal god who tells you what to eat, wear, gives you list of rules, etc, and those followers wanting to impose it on everyone. If people just worshiped and were spiritual it would be a more peaceful world.

Not to nitpick, for I largely agree, but I must say worship is a rather strange and overrated concept. We might do it at times, and for various things and reasons, but being told one must always worship a certain thing is extremely off-putting to me.
