In this episode of healthHackers®, Meenal Lele - medical researcher, author of 'The Baby and The Biome,' allergy mom, and founder CEO of Lil Mixins - chats to me about:
🔹How your baby's risk of developing allergies, asthma, eczema and even IBS can be linked to the gut microbiome
🔹Major players in microbiome dysfunction: antibiotics, pregnancy and baby care, diet, and environment
🔹The age most food allergies develop in children (it's younger than you think!)
🔹The only proven method to cut the risk of your baby developing food allergies
🔹How Meenal's son's number of food allergies jumped from 8 to 10 following oral immunotherapy
🔹Why feeding nuts, peanut, egg, and other allergenic foods in infant-safe powder forms should not interfere with breastmilk or formula
🔹The clinical studies that support the feeding of allergy-causing foods from the age of four months
🔹What we're doing wrong when it comes to diaper changing and washing our babies that can harm their immune systems
🔹The biggest mistake we're making with antibiotics
🔹Why eczema can trigger a chain reaction leading to food allergy and asthma
🔹Probiotics - the key strains with evidence for eczema prevention, but WHEN you take them matters

Great to see you Return healthHackers is excellent and so informative/educative - Very Brave for you to get your lovely Bibi to become immuno-protective & resilient against Allergenic reactions that train your body's system to be accepting of certain foods that of course you yourself have had to strictly avoid so early intervention/resilience makes sense, especially at such a young age. Very Brave of you Gemma to introduce the powders into your home for Bibi - Best Wishes David

How wonderful that proper research and study are now taking place regarding the problems of food allergy in children. I remember in the 1950s, my little 2-year-old sister had gentian violet painted onto her eczema. It never helped her and is now banned in many countries as highly toxic. In 1980 I was told at a clinic that babies are NOT allergic to milk and I was clearly just a neurotic first-time mother. This was because my breastfed baby definitely was allergic to something. I was advised to massage olive oil all over her skin. A friend suggested that we try a soy-based formula instead. This helped quite a bit as I weaned my daughter onto Wy-soy at 8 months and she seemed to enjoy it. I had to order it through a 'health shop'. My second child did not develop a nut allergy until she was about three years old. It didn't become life-threatening until she was a teenager. Interesting that in London we have completely different advice than you have in the US. My children were greatly helped at the Homeopathic hospital in Great Ormond Street in London. Such a shame that the UK government closed it down. We knew of several children that had allergy issues in the 1980s. They had to take their own food to birthday parties etc, but on the whole, these poor children were ignored by the medical profession, who assured mothers that their child would 'grow out of it.' Keep up this fantastic work and research for the sake of my grandchildren.

That was fascinating! I’d never thought of the digestive and intestinal tract like a barrier before. Makes so much sense. I’m definitely going to be checking household products and switching out for less toxic ones now.
