Pretty Lahontan Cutthroat in Taylor Creek (Lake Tahoe Area)

I had some time to kill and no plans to fish anywhere else so this road side stop seemed like a good idea.

Beautiful Taylor Creek - thanks for taking us along - looks like some tough fishing - but you got some and loss a few - that first one by the log jam was nice - catch you later🎣👊👍

The fishing wasn't easy but I think I'll try to hit the tributaries again in the Fall when the flows are down.

That’s my favorite color panther Martin…. Extremely effective. In small creeks with super clear water when it’s very sunny try and all black panther martin…. Black blade and black body…. No colors or markings…. That black color silhouettes the lure extremely well against the bright sky and makes it very easy for the trout to spot… give it a try

Right on. I have an all black panther martin that just has yellow spots that I sometimes bust out. I love panther martins because the blades spin easy with a lot of vibration and the lead body makes casting and fishing deep easier.

Nice catches with novel techniques! Those cutthroats probably hang around all summer in Taylor to feast on the eggs of spawning red (sockeye) salmon that are famous in Taylor in August.

That's why I think there had to be some big ones in there. The one I lost in front of that log was nice. I bet big trout follow the salmon up the river just to feed on the eggs.

The current fish and wildlife guide has it clearly listed under trout waters with special regulation chart as opening the Saturday before Memorial day until September 30th. The forest service sire has it July 1st but I think that's outdated because the Fish and Wildlife guide just moved it up to Memorial day Weekend and I don't think the Forest service site was updated to reflect the changes. It's under lake Tahoe tributaries in the fish and wildlife guide. I think that alphabetical chart starts on page 56 to make scrolling to it easier if you want to take a look.

I'm sure when the salmon are spawning in the Fall there will be bears. Not much room on these small tributaries for all of us. If I see a bear feeing in the creek or hanging around I think I'll just let it have the space!

Right on. After all of the times I have driven over it I can't believe this was the first time I actually stopped to fish it. I guess the main reason is I'm not up in this area a lot when the tributaries are open. In the Summer if I'm in the area it's usually for the backcountry fishing.

Rivers, reservoirs, Lake Tahoe itself, I have videos for all of it. Suggestions for how to catch trout in all of the places can be found on my fishing tips playlist. My channel homepage is a good place to start. Good luck.

I change out the hooks myself. You can buy an "open eye" hook that goes right in the loop where the treble was. I usually go one size down on a single over what comes on the PM #6 and #4.

The tributaries to Lake Tahoe are covered under Lake Tahoe on the special regulation chart for trout waters. Covers all tributaries for lake Tahoe up to the first lake. Long story short, no bait, artificial barbless/ catch and release only, short season. Easy to find on the chart. Covers the areas where the creeks enter the lake as well.
