    Brenda, thank you for your video! I have been struggling with these two verb tenses for over 2 months. I stumbled upon your video and watch it over and over for 3 days. Thanks to your practical explanation, I was able to tell the difference and was able to make my own sentences with these two verbs combined. A BIG THANKS TO YOU!

    English does indeed have an imperfect tense in the past. It is called the Past Continuous by most teachers of English as a foreign language (my profession) and their students. But some teachers call it the Past Progressive. Eg. I was walking past the store when I saw an accident. ('was walking' is Past Continuous, 'saw' is Past Simple). This past tense can also stand alone as in: Jim was working in Perth in 2005. It works pretty much the same way as how the 'imperfecto' works in castellano and the 'imparfait' does in French. Sometimes also this idea of a description in the past or an ongoing even is expressed by 'used to' or 'would' as in: I used to play tennis in the 70s. I would walk to university when young rather than go by car. These three structures enable us to give a description of what we were doing at a point in the past.

Just want to know if its still the same or there is any difference.

    ¡Gracias por tu pregunta Hina! We have two simple past tenses in Spanish, what in English we call simple past (I had, I was, etc). In Spanish we have the pretérito (yo tuve, yo fui) and the imperfecto (yo tenía, yo era). Basically we need to learn when to use one tense and when to use the other. And that is exactly what I teach you in this lesson. Try to watch it again with this new information and see if you now can understand it a bit better. You're a beginner and you're doing an incredible job, don't be discouraged if this lesson is a bit hard to understand at first. ♥ Let me know if you have any question.

    Sometimes a sentence will begin with simple past then include imperfect (Vi al perro que doblaba la esquina a toda carrera.) Seeing the dog is in the simple past for some reason that I cannot determine.

  • @HolaSpanish

    @HolaSpanish

    4 жыл бұрын

    exactamente Jonathan. We say vi al perro because that is a one time past action with no duration and no connection to another action, what's more, it doesn't describe the dog or you in the past, you're not describing the setting of the story, or a routine in the past. I saw the dog. Now que doblaba is in the imperfecto because this is a past action with duration, it's not finished, you saw the dog while it was turning the corner (can you see here that in English to give this verb the same effect of duration we put in the past continuous?) I saw a dog that was turning. Now you can also say vi al perro que dobló en la esquina, this is also correct but now you have 2 distinct past actions, one happens after the other and there's no connection between them, first you see the god, then the dog turned on the corner (could have been straight away or not, not info on this is given). I saw the dog that turned the corner could also mean that were other dogs but you saw the one that turned the corner. I hope this helps (and not further confused things for you jajaja)

    Bueno! Gracias por sus videos. Disfruto todos. Pregunta - pero en ingles. I am describing a building and want to say "it was a convent, but then became a jail, and then a movie theatre." Would I use "era" to describe it as a convent in the past? This is really confusing to me (but, so is the use of "por" and "para," which I know is another of your videos and on my viewing list!). By the way, the building I was looking to describe is real and was built in 1576. So, it has had numerous uses over the years.

    At 6:48 both "tuvo" and "tenía" are used in the same sentence!

  • @HolaSpanish

    @HolaSpanish

    5 жыл бұрын

    They can be used in the same sentence and refer to different things when conjugated in imperfecto and pretérito. Por ejemplo: "yo tenía ganas de ir al cine ayer, pero no tuve tiempo de ir" (I wanted to go to the cinema yesterday, but I didn't have time to go). Here you have the same verb (tener) conjugated in both past tenses. The first one is in imperfecto (tenía) because we're talking about an intention I had in the past, a desire, a feeling. In the second is in the pretérito (tuve) because we're telling exactly what happened yesterday, it's a complete past action (I didn't have time, I didn't go). I hope it makes sense now ¡Muchas gracias!

    Your friend from France -- it sounds like he is dead now? Can we assume that fact since you were talking about him in the past? Or did you just break up?

    ¡Hola Trombone! Thank you for your question ¡Muchas gracias! No, you can't really assume that my friend passed away from that statement in the past. We use the imperfect to describe people in the past. Of course it would depend on the context, maybe you're telling a story about your childhood, or maybe you're not friends anymore, maybe he did pass away and you're talking about him. The important thing is that when you want to describe people in the past in Spanish you need to use the imperfecto tense and not pretérito. I hope this explanation help ;)

    @@HolaSpanish Thanks again. I guess the context is crucial here. Describing a person in the past tense is not a commonly ocurring experience I can relate to -- and I had a hard time recalling when I might use this sentence structure.

    @@tromboneJTS ¡de nada! I hope it's a bit clearer now how we use the past tense in Spanish. ¡Muchas gracias!

    This was much too advanced for me but generally, could you leave the captions on the screen longer, please?

    Instead of giving a single dialogue, please involve more persons and practice. De todos modos, está bien

    For sure, I'll make some videos with other forms of exercises. This video was to showcase the theory with the main differences between these 2 tenses in Spanish. More videos with practical exercises coming soon! Thank you for your suggestion ;)

    I find the title of this video confusing. According to other sources Pasado Simple and Preterito Indefinido are one and the same thing. Then at 0:40 and at 3:38 you say that Preterito Imperfecto and Preterito Indefinido are the same thing! Besides, the word preterito just denotes a past tense, so naming the video "preterito vs. imperfecto" does not make much sense.
