I power wash my engine once a year. Been doing this since inwas 16 and I'm now 46... never had one issue. Runs better and cooler... wash away folks!

Great advise. I’ll be pressure washing my wife’s and my truck motor.!

Years ago we always did this and as a precaution we always had a pal sat in the drivers seat revving up the engine so it didn't cut out. We started by soaping it all down with the lance and then rinsed it off with the high pressure wash. We never had a problem and that was back in the days when seals were prone to let moisture in.

Thanks instilled more confidence to do this after watching your excellent clip vs a few other "advice" videos!! and also the WD-40 tip!

Another precaution you should clearly articulate is not to, under any circumstances, approach closer than 3" any soft conduits/connections, with the high pressure washer nozzle. Disregarding it could cause damage to such soft conduits/connections.

I like that Big Hat Coleman lantern. Thank you for posting. I agree with you. But my 1988 Jeep Cherokee engine bay doesn’t like to be washed. But then again it has 375,000 miles and the wiring is.......Sketchy at best hahahaha. Sounds like good maintenance for newer cars.

Ahhh POINTS! Used to keep extra set in glove box for my cars & trucks. Heck! My vw’s I kept extra distributor all ready to go. 2-3 minutes and moving again. Still have my rust free 1989 Toyota truck that every time I get oil changed it gathers a crowd because engine is so clean. 260k miles and still solid.

Exactly! How is it that during flooding in Florida or in the rest of the world cars and trucks ride as deep as the top section of the intake manifold goes? Because its all made to hold a complete water dive as long as you don't let any in the intake manifold. Also on a warm engine, after the wash, most of the water will evaporate like of a frying pan anyways. But I do recommend wrapping the alternator and other electronic components in a grocery bag, they will get water anyways but not as much to get too much of it in the vital components such as bearings that dont receive oil supply

the way I like to clean the engine is to start with a cool engine, then spray it down with a mild degreaser (something like 409 or fantastic) focusing on particularly dirty areas. Then I get a bucket of warm water with a generous shot of car wash soap on good dish detergent and sponge everything down. Next is a gentle rinse with a garden hose. After that you can start the engine and let the heat drive off the moisture. Note: Engine degreaser is good stuff, but it is a strong chemical and might take lettering off of your plastic pieces or the clearcoat off of aluminum.

I was always told differently. :( NOW I've SEEN this I know I need to CLEAN my own! I have not been driving my car as much lately and the oil is building up on top where it leaks, so I know a good cleaning is going to help!

Got a 77 c10, 250 L6. Gonna replace the valve cover gasket but wanted to clean the motor up first, so I can see if I did a crap job and she still leaks. WD-40 is a good tip, I honestly didn't even think about that. Thanks for the tips Mister, God bless.

If you haven’t done it yet, Don’t do it, there’s many risks you can have. Getting water on wires or electrics is just going to kill them also your alternator, also if oil is slightly leaking from somewhere you get water inside the engine that’s going to destroy it, getting water inside under the distributor. I’m not saying don’t use a gentle hose. Don’t pressure wash an Engine

Good job. I always left mine running and tha WD 40 is no joke. Drove trucks all my life also and I would always come home with a good warm engine. Pull up raise, the hood, spray degreaser all over the greasy oily places and the heat would almost melt it all away, hit with high pressure and gone. Hey, I think they run better to, all the dirt and gunk just keeps them hotter, like a blanket.

Wished I knew about wd 40 back in the day. I washed my 67 firebird like that and it took a couple days before it would run again😃😃

My first car was a 65 Mustang. Dad and I rebuilt the engine and I added the dress up chrome, and so forth. I washed the engine every time I washed the car. I sprayed the distributor with HD40, ran the car for about 2 minutes then I sprayed 50/50 dish soap all over the warm engine. I attached the hose to our water heater drain cock and sprayed the engine with hot water. It cut any grease or oils. I would blow the engine off with compressed air while it ran. Never had a problem with it starting. Oh, and because I had an open air cleaner I wrapped an old filter with aluminum foil and kept it in the shop for wash day. Try the hot water! Works like a charm! I know this video is old but what about if I've got a good amount of leaks? I wanna wash mine so it's easier to see where all I'm leaking from but was concerned about water mabye getting in through thoughs leaks. Is that okay do u think?

So grateful for this video, thank you! Mice nested somewhere in my 2018 Jeep GC engine over the winter and I have been dying to pressure wash it to clean it out and try to eliminate the smell but wasn’t sure if this was possible. Definitely going for it now. One question: so many videos say to cover the alternator with a plastic bag…is this really necessary in newer cars? Thx again!

Personally, i just avoid spraying the alternator directly, but it would be better if you put something like a grocery bag over it.

I did not know this! We worked on our cars back in the 60s, 70s & 80s I was always told not to steam clean the engine but I should clean with the silicone spray, which would keep the water and snow off the engine so I wouldn't have a short somewhere just in case. My dad's favorite tools were WD-40 and duct tape so I know a lot of shortcuts😉

In the front door of the rig is a hammer, Bowie knife & fuses for my rig😂 but the duct tape and WD-40 were mandatory in every we owned.😂😉

I have a similiar GMC Envoy 4.3 litre V6, 4L60e with Tow Option ... I recently been buying a "Soy Based" spray engine cleaner that I can use at home .. Soy Based doesn't eat up the pavement and seems to do a good job also not too expensive ... my dad also had a gas station when I was a kid I started pumping gas at 10 years old and working on cars at 12 .. I remember working underneath vehicles outside at 12 years old draining antifreeze in a Blizzard at 1:00 AM to sell out the inventory and then going to school the next day ... putting it in the vehicles was free and apparently so was my labour ... every time I watch your videos I end saying ... I did that ... although I admit you are more experienced than me ...

Rick, WD-40 is simply the code used during design testing by the MFG ... "Water Displacement - batch #40" ... it is mostly fish oil and and a solvent .... the test name stuck

good tips . plus a clean engine it wont run as hot and less heat less wear and tear the heat exscapes easier . ha! ive still got a flexable points allen wrench and a distributer wrench a dwell meter and timing light. ha! just cant throw them away . kinda a part of automotive history.

I'm glad they're relics now, but I still miss my 55 chevy.

I too have always pressure washed my engine bay, it makes to job of finding any oil leaks so much easier, most cars being diesel now do not have the HT track down problem, and I usually once a year, also spray a little oil emulsifier (Gunk), over the engine before pressure washing, I find it best to be a bit careful not to direct the jet into the multi connectors, but I always blast off with an air line before finishing. I always say, would I go up in this if it were an aeroplane, if not, I have not done the job properly! Chris B.

I haven't deliberately tried to avoid it and haven't had any troubles (so far) but will certainly take that into consideration!

I always use Dawn. It's not bad for the earth and hell, all that on the engine is going there eventually.

Always Always make sure the vehicle is running. That way the temperature change will be disbursed while the internal water flow is moved throughout the engine. If you leave it and just spray. There is a higher percentage that you may crack the engine if it's hott. The same rule of thumb is when you need to absolutely need to add water to a hot engine. Make sure it's running. Same principle

These days it's mostly just dust and mud splatters in there, but when I first get a vehicle I use Gunk engine cleaner or tire sidewall cleaner. I also had good luck using a mix of half Simple Green and half water. Wet the engine, spray it all over and then let it sit for awhile. Thanks for watching Dan!

Maybe the safest way is to use an adjustable power washer at home after the engine is completely cold? I've also wiped down the black plastic parts and hoses with amourall shine to make the engine really sparkle.

I just recently got a power washer and use it carefully ( because of the higher pressure). It sounds like you have a clean engine!

The first time I washed it, it blew the alternator so after a couple hundred dollars I was told to leave the engine running when you power wash it what happen the alternator died

I don't concentrate the spray on the electricals and I keep the spray nozzle back a bit, but everything is water tight under the hood so you'll be ok. If it wasn't, then driving through a rainstorm with all that water coming through the radiator would shut the engine down.

I've always pressure washed mine with engine running, if it cuts off during the process, you know where the problem is at.

It should work, use a degreaser spray first and avoid using high pressure on the electronics.

I’ve seen some disasters come into the shop after high pressure washing the engine bay ! One truck ended up having to have the main CPU replaced, one more had to have the Alt replaced ! Too many electronic ( delicate ) sensors and connections that were not designed for high pressure water ! What water that comes into the engine bay via ram air going down the highway is different! People ask me and I tell them , don’t do it ! Besides the engine run fine the way it is !

Years ago I did some washing on the engine of our 66 Mustang. When done, it ran like crap. I took it out for a 25 mile drive to heat it up, and afterward it ran fine.

Engine looks great. Makes me kind of want to fry up some bacon and eggs on top of it. My Ford 5.4 liter has a weak point with the spark plugs. They are at the bottom of a deep tube in the head and water from cleaning will accumulate down there and cause a short for the spark and the engine won't run. Then you have to get out the 8 MM socket and go around the whole engine getting the water out from the tube and on cyls 3 4 8, trust me, no fun. You need to climb up and reach way back there and try to clean things out. You have more traditional plug locations next to the exhaust manifold. The good old 289s, 390s cleaned easily and always ran. Take care...

@@gonagain The individual coils at each cylinder have a rubber boot on them that is supposed to seal the elements out from the plug hole but they don't work well on water. If you are careful and direct pressure washing away from the plug holes, the chance mayl be less. I found this issue the hard way.

2004 chevy silverado. Got water in a connection, and it wouldent go over 25 mph until I dried it ( chevy tech told me where to look)!

If that happened on mine I'd want to replace that connection, we have the same engine and I've never had a problem. Your engine gets doused with water all the time when you drive in rain by all the water getting sucked through the radiator and you don't that old connection getting you stranded.

Hi mate. Thanks for this video. I have the engine removed from the car for watever reason (complete with gearbox). Is it still ok to pressure wash it? I suppose i would need to cover off any exposed holes like driveshaft entry ports, cooling system hoses etc.? Greetings from sunny Wales!

Yes you can. Just tape plastic bags over the openings and you'll be fine.

I’ve never done this always a bit weary I would mess something up but I’m here because the truck I bought is filthy. Just one thing I’m curious about ? Nothing really hurts the alternator by getting wet ? I’m a bit amazed but like the gentleman here says when it rains well the engine does get wet

The alternator will withstand being wet, just don't spray it directly. Also, start out using plenty of good engine degreaser and spray that off. You shouldn't need to use close-up high pressure spray on anything except heavy dirt and grease below the valve covers.

WARNING to NEW DIY TYPES: You do this to ANY engine with a distributor, and it ain't going to run, be prepared to remove the cap and dry it out. Believe me, been doing this since the 1960's.

Pressure washed my engine about 2 months ago, didn't have any problems. My truck is from 1966, definitely has a distributor. Just cover things properly, I had a couple solid grocery bags duct taped around things like my air cleaner, distributor, alternator, brake fluid reservoir, etc (just being safe on some of those things) and removed my battery beforehand. I did 4 passes of degreaser, pressure washing in between each one for a couple hours and dried it out with a leaf blower and air compressor. Started right up, never misfired. It steamed for a long time boiling all the water off though, be prepared for that

I’ve heard to be careful power washing because the water can get into the alternator and electrical components which can ruin it

You don't want to concentrate the spray directly into the alternator, but the electrical components in the engine compartment are very well protected due to all the water that enters the engine compartment when you drive through a rainstorm.

I used to spray clean my engines all the time without problems. It was with the old points driven distributors. Never had a problem. I always stayed away from the distributor or wrapped it in plastic wrap. Didn't have a problem with spark over on the sparkplug wires, but I usually used expensive race wires. My friends did use WD-40 so I was aware of its function and use but didn't have a need to use it. Never tried it on the newer vehicles though I've thought of it. My grandfather washed and waxed everything he could reach on his vehicles, even waxed under the hood. He always sold his vehicles back to dealerships every 8-10 years and got the same price back as he paid initially. I used to buy a lot of 4x4's off the Oglala Reservation and they were pretty will pitted out. The quarter car wash was used inside and out meaning I opened the doors and had at it. Instant detailing. Ha!

This seems so dam crazy. But I have fallen victim too a muddy road and my engine n engine bay n inside hood is covered in dry mud now. I need to clean it n don’t want to get in there with just a wet rag and alot of time. Honestly it is so covered in every single tiny crack and conrner I don’t think it is possible to clean it up with out a pressure washer. Tell me the truth wise old timer are you pulling my leg or is it safe. I have one car for work and play I can’t be riding the bus or train people get stabbed and I carry my tools lots of tools during the week in my car

I have an older car none of my stuff has covers on them like yours is that okay? And how long after can you drive it?

Just avoid spraying the alternator directly, along with the distributor cap and plug wires. Remember to have a can of WD40 on-hand to spray the sparkplug wires and distributor cap if necessary to remove the water because WD40 displaces water and is safe on the wiring and electrical components. You can drive it immediately if you want.

I'm not aware of that one, but if it's listed as a replacement for WD40 then it might be ok. The thing is that WD40 displaces water.

What about the concern for the alternator and the battery being wet or soaked in water during the power wash? Is that safe to spray them both?

They electrical connections themselves are water tight. Remember, a lot of water enters through the radiator when you're driving through a rainstorm, but I don't concentrate the spray on the electrical components.

Do you use any any type of degreaser soap if the pressure washer you use is at home? What kind of soap/decreaser do you recommend and are there any ones not to use? Thanks:)

The only ones I have used are the Gunk brand that you spray on a warm engine before pressure washing and a mixture that I've used of half Simple Green and half water that you spray on a wet engine and let it sit for about 15 minutes before the wash. Some car washes have a selection for "Tire and Engine Wash" that you spray in first and let it soak.

It best to look under your hood and change your air filter and check your fluids making sure your break fluid is up to par, and you wires are not cracked replace before they no longer works for you, and if they have a carburetor that it to is kept clean and adjusted correctly to get the best running engine be surprised how little it cost you to stay on top instead of out the auto repair where it cost so much to fix the little thing you can take care of at little to no cost at all stay on top of that cost expense is much better than finding you paying for things you could have fix without the hour cost of the fix shop, oh by the way cleaning your vehicle keeps your tools cleaner too...

@@gonagain you do not have to be a doctor to take of little thing, just like you do not have to be a mechanic to do minor service to your vehicles just observant to what is going on with it and its need for service more than gas, air, coolants,brake fluid, spark plugs and if you notice a problem get it looked at before it dies on you or leaves you on the road away from help...

@@gonagain understood but we had a 1971 car for over 30 years working and going every where without to much expense, because we kept it up and did the work myself and i would not even call my self a shade tree mechanic at all, just read and do it my self then I had a friend that had mechanic shops he own and set up his own auto repair in his garage with all the tools he help me do the timing by telling what to do, but i had to do it all with some of his tools but i was thankful he would help in that way, but he was shocked to find the Indy racing transmission came with the new car i bought in 1971, by the way I was able to get my mechanic's wife back on the road and get their pickup home with what I did for them and he said I am no mechanic, but can get things back on the road and going...

It's ok, it takes more than that to short the battery, unless you spray it with a heavy stream.

I only live a few blocks from this carwash, so my engine was just warm. If I came off of the highway I'd let it cool down for a half hour or so.

IS it safe to pressure wash a 98 mustang engine tht doesnt have all those plastic coverings like your truck

I would think so, I've started cleaning an engine this way back in the 60s. Avoid prolonged blasts on the electrical and don't spray the intake and you should be fine. Remember to keep a can of WD40 handy to spray the water off the plug wires so they don't short out when you go to start the engine again.

I think a garden hose is fine. Using a pressure washer seems too risky.

Wow!! We have a 05 Hyundai Sonata & 05 Ford Explorer both have electric wire harness issues. Mechanic says damaged by overheating or being wet. Sonata can be fixed for over $1000 but Ford is trash-no longer making the wire harness.

Yes, sometimes when they get old like that the wiring gets cracks in it. Remember though, when your going down the highway in heavy rain your engine is getting doused through the radiator and that may cause it to start acting funny. Keep some of the WD40 with you just in case.

wrong it was the moister under the distributor cap.

No, I don't. On older cars with points and plug wires I did. It's fine to leave it running as long as the engine is cold or only warm to begin with. Spraying water on a hot exhaust manifold can crack it.

What about the alternator?

It does alright and the connector itself is water tight. I never spray it directly.

So it’s safe to use soap spray or just only water ?

@@gonagain had a burning smell and replaced the leaky valve cover gasket and washed the backside of it but still smelling a burning smell, ugh!

I felt my car running better after a regular car wash.

Spray the plug wiring down with WD40. It will displace the moisture and it should start ok. If that engine has a coil and distributer cap spray those down too with the WD40. That product was made for this purpose.

@@gonagain thanks I was gonna do it but I didn't because I barely washed the engine and didn't want to get the motor grease so I removed the distributor cap and sprayed electric cleaner and put dielectric grease in the cable boots and it started right away. Thanks again

I always just go to the coin-op carwash to do this, so it isn't very much. If you're starting with a dirty, oily engine, begin with lots of Gunk engine cleanerb or similar.

Spray Gunk engine cleaner first.

I just don't concentrate the water on any electrical connections directly, but all of those connections in your engine compartment are very water tight anyway. You'll be able to see and control the water jet and direct it at the dirtiest places. Don't try to get it perfectly clean the first time and just do it occasionally over time. It really helps to use a good degreaser spray like Gunk Engine Degreaser first.

With ALL The Things I Know in This World, I'm Not Afraid to Admit that I've Always Been Reluctant to Shower-Water All Over My Engine.(How Dumb of me) I would leave it to Someone in a Shop who would 'Prime' Every Nook & Cranny with Gunk?? I was told 'They' Know Best and Leave it to Them, the So Called Pros. OK, FINE. But I was Both a Wimp and thought if Anything was going to go wrong, it would Be On Them. SO, One Question. Were You Using Soap in the Spray Nozzle at the car wash?? Soap first then plain water to Rinse?? I Kinda Think So. Gee, do I Feel Stupid. THXS AGAIN. Erik (BTW, my FJ Cruiser is Almost 7 years young & it will Turn 27K miles by next week)(I've Had Such Incredible Luck with Never Getting Stuck considering the places where I go) One Fantastic 4×4, with All the Extras & Lockers to Boot) Strange Looking, but it is SO Comfortable going Over Nasty Terrain. I Should have Stock in the Company. Was Offered 10K Over the Original Price I paid for it. They are Now a Collector's Item. Fancy That. NOPE, I'm Keeping It. 🌝

Oh yeah, i use soap. If it's the first time i would soak it with Gunk first and then pressure wash it. Linda mentioned the FJ yesterday as a possible vehicle. Too bad they discontinued it!

'THEMS Fighting Words') Jeep people believe that Anything Other than a Jeep is Below Them. Wrong. FJ's Have Taken On the Rubicon Trail by Expert Off Road Pros. It's Printed with Pictures in a Very Descriptive Booklet from when I got my first FJ. The Low End Gearbox is Out of this World, and one of the Last Mechanical G-Box's that are Not Available on Other 4x4's these days. (Strong & Sturdy. Will Not Break or leave one Stuck) The Creature Comforts inside Smokes Any Jeep. Ya, they are Small, but I removed the Rear Seats so Bruzetta All 170 lbs. Has Her Own Home on wheels when we travel. Older cars will get murdered doing this! Fuel injectors are a major issue if you high pressure to close

Just don’t blow high pressure water into the back of electrical connectors.

I got the feeling if I powerwash my cheap car I will lose 50% of my cables. I have to admit if I get some WD-40 it will probably be OK.

At first you said Not to do it in a hot engine, but then you said you drive it to a power washing station and do this at least once a month???

That's right, but my engine isn't hot when I do the wash, I let it cool down first. Warm is ok, like if you only had to drive a few blocks. The danger is in cracking a hot exhaust manifold by spraying cold water on it.

No, no it’s not. You have waaay too much pressure. At most, a soft wash (500 psi) is marginally ok.
