Pressure Problems: Arctic Freezer 50 CPU Cooler Review & Benchmarks

Ойындар

The Arctic Freezer 50 (non-TR version) really needs some work. Arctic has a strong liquid cooling CPU cooler lineup, but this air cooler has pressure and assembly weaknesses.

Our review of the Arctic Freezer 50 specifically benchmarks the AM4/Intel version, but be advised that there is also a Threadripper ("Freezer 50 TR") version out there. We have not tested the Threadripper one and so can't speak to its quality at this time -- but we can talk about the Freezer 50 as it pertains to its desktop CPU (non-HEDT) cooling capabilities. The Freezer 50 competes most directly vs. the Scythe FUMA 2 (which we reviewed), and at the higher-end, more expensive competition includes the Noctua NH-D15, Deepcool Assassin III, and similar. We're still working towards uncovering the "best" CPU coolers for our eventual 2021 round-up, but for now, the list is shaping-up pretty well.

As Arctic dealers we have watch them grow over the last few years. A lot of what happens with these type of products is what we called typical German over engineering. The products are fantastic and they put a lot of work into them but sometimes the first generation of them can be a little over engineered. The amazing thing about them is they're very receptive to engineering and product feedback from both customers and reviewers and even dealers like us. One of the big things was the new iteration of the liquid freezer with the bracket not clearing properly. They were very receptive and I wouldn't be surprised if they released a revision in about three to six months correcting a lot of the deficiencies. There are definitely a company filled with passionate people that helped us legitimize our business when we were just starting out

That alone makes a cooler that can't fit a standard fan a non-starter for my next purchase, and makes a Noctua cooler with its included fan(s) look like a discount right out of the gate. Cheap crap is fine sometimes, but there sure is something to be said for reliable parts from reputable brands.

Spewing random IT hardware thoughts here because this video was posted recently: I've been really, really impressed by Crucial/Micron RAM lately. I used to do some work for Samsung, doing firmware level stuff for the infamous 5th chip on their sticks(The ECC module)... I had an R7 1700 system I built 4 years ago. No matter how many RAM kits I threw at it, it wouldn't take allow me to clock any of them stable above 2666. Until I ran into a Crucial 3200 CL 16 kit. Works like a charm. No crashes. Make a video about how good Micron RAM has become? Becoming even better than Samsung, possibly? Cheers, Steve.

Absolutely loved the all around measures for clearances guys, if I was going to buy this it would make it so much easier. For some reason your graphs were easier to read than the regular wire-graph layouts manufacturers provide. Also I use the TR50 version of this in my workstation at work and it is absolutely great for the mid-range 3970x I have got in there. I actually have it fixed at 40% fan speed under 90°C and it is absolutely silent. Too bad the stricter clearance and the cause of a smaller keep clean zone around the smaller CPUs caused so much issue for Arctic. But! It's not the first time Arctic gets criticism for its mounting mech :-) And I sadly think it won't be the last. I also use a Freezer 2 240 at home and the AM4 mount is absolutely terrible. The TR50 was great though, but that's easier to design for really.

that pressure map, oof. I'm sure the zen2 and zen3 IHS is square, about 2.0518e-5 x 2.0518e-5 nautical miles, I would worry that the outer edge of the core chiplets and io die are off the edge beyond the pipes fending for whatever 'whit' of Grog rations they can get out there, where the mounting bracket isn't pushing the pipes off the cpu, lol. that looks like another cooler base explicitly designed for intel's smaller IHS (1.86825e-5 x 1.7279e-5 NM). for those of us that prefer a computer with performance rather than a lava lamp desk ornament, modding vents, and restrictive panels has become the norm the past few decades, thanks for the heads up on that useless lower fan fashion accessory excursion. Great vid Steve and crew (that intro, lol). B) P.S. for those not worthy enough for the realm of shellbacks, lol... 2.0518e-5 nautical miles is about 38mm (AMD IHS) 1.86825e-5 x 1.7279e-5 NM is about 34.6 x 32mm (intel IHS)

I surprised that there isn't a Hyper 212, even for comparison purposes? I get that many ppl see it as a budget/cheap cooler, but it has been a popular cooler for many years. The Hyper 212 Black RGB is Newegg's "#1 Best Seller!" (lol). While it's helpful to see how these larger air coolers compare to AIOs, isn't it is also beneficial to see how they compare to the single tower coolers? How much of a difference is there between single & dual tower? Thanks for another great review! I really enjoy the videos.

It would be nice to have some lower end points of comparison, but the 212 really isn't the value proposition it once was. Cryorig H7 is just better at a similar base price, and with the RGB option you're already pushing uncomfortably close to the Fuma 2.

Completely agree with your findings on this cooler. I used this cooler on building my brothers new PC, the ADATA XPG Ram id bought had system compatibility problems! so diagnosing was a pain because even with this very low profile ram you will struggle to insert/take-out the ram with the cooler in place, also the middle fan fixture which when removed gives you access needs a redesign as its fiddly & stupid. Then like you I found the solid sides of the cold plate made contact first leaving little if any pressure on the heat pipes in the middle, but after lapping I found it was much better. Overall if your using low profile Ram and your prepared to lap the cold plate the cooler works just fine, but that's a big IF! I like Artic stuff but this cooler needs a whole new rethink. 1- Most people buying a RGB cooler would be using RGB-Ram not Low-Profile so what is the point of this cooler? 2- The middle fan fixture which when removed gives you access needs a redesign its total crap! 3- Cold plate needs a redesign, no point going to the effort of using direct touch heat pipes if the solid housing stops them from making adequate contact.

After watching the whole video, I'd be curious if this thing would actually perform slightly better with *less* mounting pressure. My thought it that since the mounting plate is so long when tightening it down it flexes upward. With less tension on the sides, it may allow the heat pipes to make better contact with the IHS. It's not ideal, and not something any company should expect from a customer, but would be an interesting experiment.
