For high-performance applications using semi-floating Pin retention.... we 'pin-fit' the rod small ends to .001" interference..... then 'pin-fit' the Pin clearance in the Piston as well. After which.... all that is req'd is to heat the Rod small end very lightly with a Torch until straw colored and the Pin slides right in easily.... which seems to allow the Rod small end to cool/contract more uniformly back down onto the Pins with less distortion in clamp force.(stays round as it contracts evenly) We discovered The Sunnen Rod Heaters tend to overheat the Rod leaving a definitive 'purple' definitive demarcation line contr-indicative to an hp application on the Rod Beam section(typically a 1053 steel).... as well as a non uniform 'contraction' of the Rod small end at .002+" sometimes interference when cooling back down on the Pins.... that results in some Pin 'oblong' that can be verified on the Pin end after cooling and can m,anifest as "galling" in the Piston Pin Bore in HP applications. Far easier to witness when dis-assembling/pressing off in the 'out of round' exhibited in the Rod small ends ? Just say'in.... there is 'blueprinting' for HP applications as best practise as was employed by HotRod Machine Shops 'back in the day'.... that should be at very least Noted/highlighted as being lost at an alarming rate today.... and so as NOT confused with applying 'generic' Machine practises all too often applied today by those unaware when attempting HP application with 'stock' machining ?

Irony- right now I'm building the 318 for my '76 Valiant. KB hypereutectic pistons (spec'd for a '68 vintage 318), Summit's I-beam rods for a '68 318/340, Dura-bond bearings, a polished & balanced '70 340 crankshaft w/new pilot bushing, windage tray, freshened '90-vintage 5.9L, '308-casting' heads (with air injection ports plugged, some minor work), torque plated, line-honed, balanced...it'll run a junkyard-found Edelbrock intake & '72 TQ (done by Mr. Clifton at Raleigh Carb), a set of TBC Flowtech headers (Stage 8 fasteners, Remflex gaskets), 2.5" pipe, a pair of 30+ year-old, NIB Dynomax turbo mufflers, X-crossover, distributor reman'd & optimized for my combo by Jeff @ Advanced Distributors in MN, It's not a crazy HP motor, but she'll run efficiently, respectably, as well as be more durable than factory.

@moparconnection the machinist worked for Herb McCandless. When Herb shut the machine shop side down, he & his dad bought the stuff, opened their own shop. So, to put it in his words "It's gonna be a sweet, solid running smallblock"

340 springs are an issue right now. Looking to convert to beehives. Herb jr told me, "You should easily be within 20 hp of a 340 with the combo."@moparconnection

Yup - 0.006” but with such a low performing engine it wasn’t really worth going over in this video. It’s all stock stuff. Slam it together. 😆

this comment and your attitude just convinced me NOT to subscribe . I heard you say in the past "just good enough" or "it's just a street engine". why must we settle for this . why can't we raise the bar of excellence in every thing we do ?@@moparconnection

I’m not sure how my answer upset you so much - but yeah, the tolerances are pretty loose on this very mild rebuild. If you’re this upset over me editing out checking the thrust I can certainly upload the clip. We've put together several engines over our decade of publishing, many with precision tolerances that put out big horsepower numbers. This is intentionally meant to be NOT that.

At 0:46 it appears that machinist Frank is using a wire wheel buffing disk without face and eye protection. I have found from personal experience that this is not a good habit to have. At a very early age I had to have an electromagnet pull two pieces of slag from a grinding disk out of my eyeball that had burned themselves in. Let me tell you, that was not fun. I’m going to suggest that Frank had never had that treatment before. Hope his luck doesn’t run out otherwise he will have more than a cold to worry about.

A little paint in the lifter bore helps keep the lifters from galling ... Lol I thought something was wrong with the crank bearing when I noticed the grooves missing on a couple..Those are half(semi) grooved bearings right? (I read where others mention the oiling holes missing) I'm not upset though... ;0) PS.. I think you did that intentionally to see if they were paying attention. Also wear your safety goggle when torquing or working. Just thought of something... If you're torquing and working would that be called twerking on the job?
