What do you guys and girls think of the new subscription plan? I personally think this is the beginning of Presonus alienating a LOT of it's loyal customers. IMO

It’s not just “if you don’t want you don’t need to subscribe” Since Fender took over Presonus, the S1 development suddenly slowed down and all those regular updates we sort of used to from early versions just stopped. Subs will work as long as fanboys are hooked on “get everything” story, but it’s not going to last long I’m slowly moving to Cubase since v10, it’s has a learning curve, some things are similar but some very different but it is a beast of a DAW. Now, what you don’t get in S1 vs Cubase If you want to have Melodyne version that’s on par with stock Variaudio, you need to pay extra! If you want auto audio align, you need to buy vocalign etc… Cubase does this natively If you want to use external midi instruments, Cubase has Patch scripts to help you navigate trough all the patches… Cubase stock plugins are way better and you get heaps of them that Presonus would probably charge you extra for. S1 Stock sounds are mediocre and mostly unuseable, while Cubase comes with loads of high quality sounds S1 became famous for their drag and drop workflow, but Cubase is catching up on it too. At the end, Steinberg (Cubase) is under Yamaha corporation for years and has huge user base, meaning revenue which is somewhat guarantee it will be around and improved for a long time, while Studio One is under Fender, who knows what might happen If it doesn’t make whatever their CEOs have in mind, they might simply terminate it, cut down development team, etc etc… This is why I’m moving to Cubase I will continue to use current S1 version but probably no more upgrades from me unless they come up with something that is really revolutionary in next version. Also, I’m annoyed with S1 randomly freezing (not responding) Studio One is ok DAW but is not in any way the best

eeexactly. (S1 crashes maybe 1 OR 2 times a year possibly though) ill stay on 5.5.2, i have not seen anything worth it after that. and sure the problems were present already before fender even, ancient sounds, worthless addons presented as something when they should have all been easily free with the pro version just to make up for the dry prehistoric library. When you think about it the changelog 90% is all license exchanges between corporations. Poor devs and pooor dear S1, it didnt deserved to die this way... RIP

There ain't any "Best DAW". If you have experience in the industry than you would probably have/know multiple DAWs. Any DAW with a monthly subscription model less than $20 is good for many people out there. You could only crossgrade if you already had a pro version. So no one starting out would pay $500+ for cubase. If you have a budget of $500 use a subscription model like presonus and get 3rd party plug-ins. No stock plug-in is better than kontakt/arturia stuff or effect plug-ins.

  • @FlatTire

    @FlatTire

    2 ай бұрын

@@mrrazz7178 That’s all subjective. I can only speak for myself and have my own reasons. $500 is not a lot even if you are starting out IMO. People start out playing music and pay more for instruments. I prefer to purchase stuff that I need and want to use, not to subscribe and have “everything” that’s not of any use to me. Besides that, subscription means eventually loosing any instrument or plugin that is sub only even if you decide to go perpetual after X amount of time, which means ending up with so many songs with unavailable plugins (I’m talking about composing/production side, not pure mixing) Imagine you open your old session and there are heaps of plugins or instruments missing?? As I said at the top, it’s not just about cheaper or “more stuff” DAW is not mobile phone service so you “have unlimited calls” even though you only make small amount of them… As for plugins, Cubase 13 is loaded with so many great ones that even “everything” in Presonus subscription is not even close Check it out

Saw it coming once fender took over. Stayed on studio one 5. Didn't see the point in updating to version 6. Also, I could see the updates were getting worse. As a mac user I moved to Luna. Gets me by given I don't do heavy midi. Did look at cubase 13 and its closer to studio one now, so if I was looking for something to replace studio one then cubase would be the one. I can just crossgrade. But for now I'm digging the analog vibes from Luna. Had used studio one for over 4 years. Unfortunate to see the direction its taking.

I kinda thought about going back to Studio One to keep tracking but I don't know I may just ditch it I rarely use it. I'd collaborate and produce inside of Logic for most of the music then switch to Studio One (instead of Pro Tools) for my final tracking and editing. Cubase just really checks the most boxes for an all in one daw. At least for me and my workflow.

I only own S1 Artist 6 which is more than enough to still produce professional content - there are no major limitations. I guess I am probably a minimilist who do not care about built in features or extra stuff in a subscription. once I get the hybrid option I won't even install the extra stuff... I will get the hybrid plan asap in order to get 'n pro license with or without long term updates, I don't care. Hey Josh... Spot on. (a repost from another vid comment). As a tech geek and a S1 user since v2, I do love S1 for many things. From its macros and interface to its easily accessed database architecture, I've been happy with the tool. It is the new company, and its policies and directions that leave me apathetic these days. I'm a nobody in music and can't carry a tune in a bucket. I know guys like me no longer mean much to FenderSonus and therefore, after years of enthusiasm, the spark is gone. I've created many hours of unmonetized S1 tutorials and responded to countless forum questions because I thought it was a great tool that guys like me might appreciate. It seems however, that those days are done, and I get it. Business changes and that is the way it is. I worked for a little software guy from Seattle, so I know the game. In actuality, and for simple logistical reasons, I'll probably keep S1 as part of my workflow. It is and will be a solid work horse with more power than I'll ever need. However, just like a great set of amps that you don't want to swap out, I think I'll use it strictly for the less exciting things (imho) like arranging and mastering, and leave the creative, heartfelt, and exciting pieces to tools like Live and others that generate some spark and don't leave a sour taste in my mouth. Cheers and thanks for the content. I might even look at Cubase. :)

Hang on, let's bottom line this. Up till now you could rent everything Presonus for 50p a day but not own the DAW or pay £316 to own the current Studio One Pro DAW. Now you can still pay £316 to own the latest Studio One Pro DAW or rent everything for 50p a day BUT at the end of 12 months renting you own outright which ever version of Studio One you're currently renting. Sounds like a great deal to me, or am I missing something? Personally as an original Sphere subscriber I think 50p a day for everything in the Presonus software catalogue is a total no brainer. 🤔

The key point that most people fail to mention is that, if you already own any version of S1 Pro, the cost to upgrade when they release a new major version is $149 USD. And they only release major versions every 2 years or so. So that's $75 per year to OWN IT and get point updates. They realized this, and that's why they are now including things like instruments as subscription exclusives. That's the only "value add" to the sub. I'll be happy as long as they offer the perpetual upgrade option. If they cut that, that'll be business suicide just like Waves did (and backtracked).

The Studio One 6.6 update was rather disappointing, especially the notion that subscribers are now considered the A team, leaving the rest of us as mere spectators without any benefits as Pro users. However, that's okay; it motivated me to make a decision. I've been alternating between Cubase and Studio One for the past few years, and I haven't been particularly satisfied with either. I am a long-time Cubase user. I decided to explore Logic Pro X too. Today, I made the switch and I'm opting for Logic Pro X. It evokes a sense of nostalgia, reminiscent of the early days of music production software-not necessarily in layout, but in its overall approach. I feel a sense of belonging and comfort in Logic Pro X. I have a feeling we'll become great companions.

You're looking at this all wrong. You have 3 choices - (a) buy the current version, stick with it forever, (b) buy the current version, keep it forever and subscribe to the "+" extras annually (which of course you can stop doing whenever you want), or (c) subscribe to everything monthly and always be fully up to date. Yes, the fact is that if you stop subscribing you lose access to the 'extra' stuff (plug-ins, instruments etc) but that's entirely reasonable because those extras are what your subscription buys you. If you've been subscribing, hopefully you've rendered any important work to audio files and therefore your work is saved regardless of any later move away from the "+" extras. You can't have everything. I've been subscribing monthly for a couple of years and it's fine, I can stay or go and it's up to me. This hybrid model amounts to "if you decide not to subscribe in future, you walk away with a free perpetual license" - what's the problem?

Don't want to change anyone's ideas here. There's no right or wrong. In my opinion, the subscription is a good thing. You pay a known amount, which I think is not very much for a full option software. For some people, like me, who want to experiment a little, this subscription is affordable and within reach. Paying 500 or more euros at once can be a lot of money. After a while it's quite expensive, to again, buy an upgrade. The alternative is buying a cheaper version, but then you're missing functionality. It's also a manner to contribute to the development of the software. These engineers need to work everyday to improve and develop the software. For that they need to get paid too. But as said, others here might have other goals and needs and don't think it's a good thing. I respect that opinion too!

50p a day for a superb evolving daw, project page, console emulations, plugins, loop catalogues, instruments, Notation etc, etc is a total no-brainer. Nothing out there to compete, and to think what us former Pro Tools had to put up with! 😎

I am using Studio One 5.5. I don't use their plugins. I use Waves and izotope. I don't care what Presonus does with Studio One because the version I have works fine. I don't need there updates! I also use Avid Protools 12. I believe Avid was one of the first to do the subscription BS after version 12.

Been with Presonus for years, last couple they have been in decline, kept hoping they would get back on track , never imagined they would get to the point where they would make old fashioned but steady Cubase look good . Totally agree with a return to Cubase, good offers at the moment .

Hybrid subscription seems very similar to Bitwig Studio model. i think they borrowed the idea. But in Bitwig each point update is huge features and bug fixes compared to S1. Now Presonus need to prove they can implement great features and please most customers in a point update pace, otherwise it will be crap.

Its the same everywhere. We saw this with adobe and fotoshop. Now canva took over affinity and they will go the same way sooner or later. You simply can't develop software the way its done ten or even twenty years ago. We may not love it, but I fear we can't stop it.

Cubase is looking real nice right now. I don't like fragmentation with my music. It's basically something you don't own like everything else. So when times out you are pressured into renewing and to continue paying to keep your assets together. I don't want to shell out money to anymore subscriptions. These all add up. I for one have other things I do besides making music. I cannot sit at a computer everyday to fully get my money's worth. Then also compete with my time for Adobe for example. Then later fall asleep to Netflix and Hulu at same time...cuz that costs x amount of dollars that I'll be wasting when I get get paid every two weeks from a place that takes 80hrs of that time I could be using on my subscriptions per pay period. After the exaustion clears from your day job, and you take care all your adult errands, remember you have a wife/kids to tend to. If you are actually up to opening your subscription based daw it's like how much time do you really get and is it worth it or is it kind of a waste? Telling the truth, but being dramatic in a nutcase way too.

i think the Hybrid model is a good thing especially right now because we're at the end of version 6 lifecycle, so most likely in 12 months you'll get a perpetual licence for version 7.0, which would cost you just 180 dollars, instead of 400 + 120 dollars for a traditional perpetual 7.x licence. But they should keep both options available. But... just like you I switched to Cubase, because of how disappointing the 6.0 update was. Presonus seems to focus on AMOS, Dolby surround, video editing and tons of crap that the average music producer isn't interested in. What about making a score editor that let you choose your guitar tuning, Fender...? As for the instruments included, I think both Studio One and Cubase have hardly anything interesting (especially Studio One). In comparison Cakewalk Sonar came with so many cool instruments like Addictive Drummers, Guitar Rig...

Sonar was my first real DAW WAY back in the day before Pro Tools LE and the original M-Box. (Nostalgia) lol I'm not apposed to subscriptions I just think they are going about it the wrong way. This is basically giving anyone who owns a current perpetual license (myslef included) the shaft. I have to subscribe to get new features when I own S1 PRO........ They are setting it up to where you'll never own anything and the perpetual license you get now will be outdated in a year. It's typical big corporation business structure.

Fender CEO seems to be one of those "tart it up and sell it off" types. Make it or get fired. Either way they just move on and repeat the process. It's a "money first" rather than a "customer first" approach which is a short--sighted way to run (or ruin) a business. Coincidently, I've just bought Cubase 13 Pro and uninstalled Studio One 6.5 Pro. :)

Yeah, I've been on S1 since 1.5. I own a perpetual license but I wanted to cancel my subscription because I don't use Sphere. I'm going to continue paying until 7 drops, then I'm going to cancel my sub, so I have all updates to version 6. I learned this DAW and I enjoy my work flow, but I'm done upgrading. 6 will be my last version. Cubase is confusing to me for some reason and I don't like Ableton or Logic. I bought Luna to Mix and Master in, bought I produce in S1. I hate this b.s. Now, I have to learn another DAW. Honestly, I have FL just so I can get free updates on the flagship product, and it looks like I'm going there. Updates are free for ever. Hell, I don't know how to use FL at all. I knew when they put Atmos inside we were going to have to start putting money in this software all over again.
