The head of state and supreme commander of the Indian armed forces is the country's president. The president is referred to be India's founding citizen. Although granted these powers by the Indian Constitution, the office is mostly ceremonial, and the prime minister de facto holds executive authority.
The Electoral College, which consists of elected members of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha as well as Vidhan Sabha, the state legislative assemblies, elects the president. Article 56, section V of the Indian Constitution specifies that presidents may hold office for a term of five years. In the event that a president's term ends early or while the president is not in office, the vice president takes over. In cases when this is not practicable or in the event of any other unforeseen eventuality, the parliament may determine how to carry out the president's duties pursuant to article 70 of part V.
Since the position was created in 1950 with the passage of the Indian constitution, when India was proclaimed a republic, there have been 15 presidents of India. Three acting presidents have also held office for brief periods of time in addition to these fifteen. After Zakir Husain passed away while in office in 1969, Varahagiri Venkata Giri took over as interim/acting president. A few months later, Giri won the presidential election. He is still the only individual to have served in those roles simultaneously. Only Rajendra Prasad, India's first president, has served in that capacity for two terms.
Prior to being chosen as president, seven presidents were party members. Six of them were active Indian National Congress party members. Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, who subsequently rose to the position of president, was a member of the Janata Party. Zakir Husain and Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, two presidents, both passed away while in office. Until a new president was chosen, their vice presidents served in an acting capacity. Up until Varahagiri Venkata Giri was elected as the new president, two acting presidents filled Zakir Husain's position. M. Hidayatullah took over as acting president after Giri quit to run in the presidential elections. Pratibha Devisingh Patil, who was elected as the country's 12th president in 2007, is the first woman to hold the position.
On 25 July 2022, Droupadi Murmu took office as the 15th president of India, becoming the second woman and the first tribal person to hold the office.
*[Acting] - A person is legally considered to be acting in a position if they are not doing it on a long-term basis. This might be the situation if the post hasn't yet been formally established, the individual is just filling it temporarily, the individual lacks authority, or the individual is incapable of performing the task.
