This is as far from a black and white issue as can possibly be. General MacArthur was quite honestly a true American hero, but I think that Truman made the right decision here. On the one hand, I wish we could have pressed on and got rid of North Korea right then, but Truman knew that if China got involved (as it threatened to do if MacArthur pressed onwards any further than he did), the Soviet Union would too. World War III would have happened. It's just sad to see two wonderful leaders clash like they did in this case.

Thamauturge I understand some part of Macarthur's thought. If he were to succeed, he would of united a divided country, free it from it's tyranny and come back home as a glorious American hero. Most importantly, this was literally the only time that could be done. And I know I'm saying this from hindsight but again, if he were to succeed, he would of saved millions of lives in North Korea.

Daniel Clark The sad part is that the knucklehead like MacArthur pushed his ego to far. This was not the first time his ego got him bad grades. In the early 1930s Pres. Hoover ordered MacArthur to clean out the "Hoovervilles" as they were called. A certain Major called Eisenhour burnt them down. The Navy was making real progress in the island hopping campaign in the Pacific war. MacArthur's ego charmed Pres. Roosevelt to allow him to take the Philipines. The Navy brass were quite unaffected by his ego. From the films I see here they were quite contemptuous of him

Macarthur should have been court marshalled after what happened to him on December 8 1941, if Macarthur had fought back the US troops may have had a chance! him sitting in his room reading his bible when he should have been leading his troops is why the Air force was whipped out! The Government Hung Kimmall and pined a medal on Macarthur!

MacArthur always tried to push the line and with the nukes he stepped over it. I do agree the atomic bombs needed to be dropped to prevent a further disaster in a land invasion that would of cost hundreds of thousands of US troops and millions of Japanese citizens lives. MacArthur was the right man to lead Japan in the recovery effort, but he thought he could bully Truman into using nuclear weapons as a tactical use and Truman stood his ground. Openly insubordinate and trying to undermine Truman, Truman had to get rid of MacArthur. It just had to be done.

This is indeed the speech where he mentions the replacing of Gen MacArthur but it's later in the speech than this short excerpt shows.

Where in this video does Truman fire MacArthur. I must have missed it because I heard not on mention of Mac.

Truman is %100 right in what asserts here. Khrushchev himself later candidly admitted it.

MacArthur was a prima donna whose actions in the Philippines at the start of the war should have, in the opinion of many other generals, resulted in a court martial instead of being feted as a hero. Added to that his acceptance of $500,000 from the president of the Philippines following the Japanese conquest.

You right in the head mate? 😂 Truman avoided a nuclear fallout, tensions were very real and the USSR considering how desperate they were to spread communism wouldn’t have let it slide. Current issues in Asia have only evolved internally. His decision to not rely on a nuclear arsenal may has left the south-Korean government and Asia as a whole alive.

This man truly made a big mistake, in my opinion. I don't know whom military advise he was listening at that time that he decided to fire one of greatest U.S. General, Douglas MacArthur from his command at Wake Island. I believe the main reason why he fired Gen. MacArthur was since Gen. MacArthur was military man all the way, he wanted to end that Korean War by dropping an atomic bomb. But Truman was afraid of doing this because Russia also had the bomb since 1949 and he probably felt this will escalate the war. Also what I heard from one of U.S. Army soldier that Truman wanted to bomb one of the famous bridge only half the way and not bombing all the way into N. Korean side. When Gen MacArthur heard this tactic, he was surprised. So what kind of tactician Truman was? In my view, he was a failure. Anyway Gen. MacArthur's philosophy in fighting war was totally different because he always believed that "there is NO substitute for VICTORY." However, when it comes to politician's view, there will be a hesitation to complete the job. This is why politic does not mix. As a result of indecision and hesitation made by Truman, today we are still faced with problems with N. Korea and we are facing very serious issues these days. This is why when any war is to be fought, it should be fought all the way to victory, 100% or nothing! To this date, Korean War has not been officially ended yet.

It was strange that Truman actually had a better grasp of the big picture whereas MacArthur, an experienced general, lost his perspective after his 8th army was routed by the Chinese. Truman understood the Chinese were fighting on Stalin's urging. It was Soviet pilots who were fighting the air war posing as Chinese. If MacArthur had his wish in nuking Chinese bases and cities, Stalin might drop all pretense and launched his overwhelming forces in the West to invade Western Europe. Then Truman would have the unenviable choice to use nuclear weapons in Europe too. So he did the only thing he possibly could, by removing MacArthur. He didn't need MacArthur anyway. Matthew Ridgeway had proved he could lead the 8th Army to repulse the Chinese without using nukes.

SmithN' Wesson I find it ironic that Eisenhower let the Chinese know in no uncertain terms that there is either a truce ( of kinds) at the 38th parallel or we use the A bomb. That at least made the Chinese back off as they weren’t prepared to call his bluff. Whereas with the Truman/McArthur debacle, the Soviets and Chinese just played one against the other. As is often the case - the US was played by the ‘communists ‘ - if you don’t stand up to them then they will walk all over you and that is what is happening today with Trump

The myth of Ike’s nuclear bluff was created by Dulles in 1956. The real reason that the armistice negotiation making significant progress from March 1953 onwards was because the man behind the Korean War, Joseph Stalin died suddenly.

-not to mention C-inC of the Army in Washington at the time when the Bonus Army: broke doughboys from WWI who wanted their government bonus during the depression, marched on D.C. He used force on them and threw them out! What a crumb!!!!

Very very good President

He's justifying why he fired him. MacArthur wanted to invade further, but as Truman states he decided that he wanted to avoid a new World War. Pushing further would involve China and then probably the USSR[Which also adds eastern europe at this point.(minus greece)]

BS, David. You would've melted in Johnson's presence if he was in your face telling you to do something. LBJ was an intimidating fellow. Nixon and J. Edgar Hoover once remarked in a phone conversation, "He (LBJ) is a TOUGH individual." Nixon agreed (he often spoke w/ LBJ). When Hoover is impressed by someone's toughness, trust that said person is tough.

JFK was but Truman was one of the few Democratic presidents I could have voted for.

I think Truman's reasoning was justified, mainly because if he allowed MacArthur to nuke China then, it would've lead us to WW3 and a possible nuclear war with the USSR. Plus MacArthur kept bugging Truman about dropping the atomic bomb, so in conclusion I think this was a right choice.

I'm a great admirer of Pres. Truman however this speech sounds like the kind of total bullshine that Richard Nixon would have uttered. Nevertheless, Truman was absolutely correct in firing Gen. MacArthur as the Senate hearings over this matter, chaired by Georgia's Richard Russell so clearly revealed. Russell's committee never published any conclusions; they just voted to send all the testimony, as given, to the Senate as a whole.

Best thing Truman did. Macarthur was trying to make his own policies in Korea. He was a demagogue who though he was above his Commander in Chief and the Chiefs of Staff. His every move was filmed and edited to present him as infallible by his OWN military press corps. He was a dangerous man who once told one of his generals that if he pulled off a certain military operation, he'd recommend him for a high British decoration and release his name for newspaper publication! To him, that was the ultimate reward, glorification in the papers and medals. Roosevelt kissed his egomaniacal ass over and over instead of kicking it! So glad Truman fired this self serving egotistical bastard!

Because the military is subordinate to the civilian government in a free country. And also, Truman had been a Senator from Missouri before becoming FDR's 3rd VP. So it's not like he had no experience. Also he was a WW1 veteran.

Nope. When North Korea heard that MacArthur wanted to use atomic bombs in the war, they decided to launch their own nuclear program to defend themselves. You can thank MacArthur - not Truman.
