Present Perfect Tense | Simple or Continuous? | FOR & SINCE 🤔
In this lesson, we'll fix some common grammar mistakes made by English students when using the present perfect tense!
1. When should I use the present perfect simple and when should I use the present perfect continuous? [01:28]
2. When do I use 'since' and 'for'? [07:37]
These are both really important questions when you are using the perfect tenses in English! And this video lesson will answer BOTH of them!
Later in the lesson, I'll also show you how to use 'for' and 'since' with the present perfect tenses. Both of these words explain how long something has been happening. So, when you want to give more information about the amount of time that an action has been happening for - the duration of the action - you can use FOR or SINCE.
Use FOR with a period of time.
Use SINCE with a specific point in time.

Thank you, Emma. You are such an amazing person. I can understand that what you say and I can learn that what you teach. I have been looking for a good teacher who can teach everything of English for years, and finally I found you! Thank you again, Emma.
Dear Emma, Your videos are fantastic! Everything from the way you plan the course of your lessons to the fantastic visuals which are extremely helpful. Thank you so much for producing such comprehensive lessons! English learners are always very timid when it comes to to the Perfect Tenses, but with you explaining it so patiently you were able to make a difficult subject approachable to many more students. Again, Thank you!

I've been looking for a good teacher like you since years💖
Emma, just a comment: I love your lessons, I'm also an English teacher and I always share them with my students! I usually tell my students that when we want to give emphasis to the duration of an activity that is still true in the present, we use the Present Perfect Continuous - apparently this makes things easier for them to understand, especially when the verbs are teach, work or live. For example, when I say "I have lived in Rio de Janeiro since 2010", I mean that this is still true today, but I just want to give you the fact, the final result. But when I say "I have been living in Rio de Janeiro since 2010", I want to emphasize the duration of an activity that is still true today. Emphasis on the duration of time, rather than in the fact itself. Does that make sense? Have an amazing day! Cheers!

I the same, but it was confusing because when they wanted to answer a worksheet, they didn't know when to emphasize duration or action. It applies for speaking, I guess

I've been studying english harder and resolutely for 5 months and I do it alone without instructor. I had some difficulty about grammar but I neve gave up and I've achieved a good result. The main reason is that I've learned decisevely .due to me, determination and resolution are important thing for the students who want to learn a foreign language because it's never to late to decide to do something new . if I did it, you can do it too. sometimes I have some grammar mistakes but I try to fix them .
Wow my mind is quite open now! I have to practice a lot! Since yesterday I’ve been re-watching past perfect, present perfect, all about if clauses etc etc! Thank you! Sending a hello from São Paulo - Brazil!
Great Emma, i proud you really" i think i get solution to my speaking in english problems and I'm so glad that you are my teacher!!!

hi Emma, greetings from one English teacher to another!...just a comment re: your explanations here, and please don't take it as anything other than constructive! :-) Your work is generally flawless, but I do feel there may be a danger of misleading your adoring public here: the PPC, strictly speaking, only talks about the time UP TO NOW, with no guarantee that the action will continue into the future, or even that it is actually still happening at the moment of speaking (e.g. "Mr Bond, I've been expecting you." or "Where have you been? I've been waiting for you for ages!"). Of course in reality many of the actions talked about in the PPC do continue into the future, but guaranteed it is not, and I do feel that many of your students will finish watching this video thinking that PPC actions will always continue into the future... Point 2: I wouldn't make the distinction you do regarding work and live; I simply tell my classes that to all intents and purposes they're just honorary non-continuous verbs which can be used in either form with no difference in meaning, other than where your main focus is (on the action itself, or the duration thereof)...e.g. if I say "I've been living in Berlin for 15 years or so now!" I'm not saying I'm thinking of moving or that my continued presence here is in any way in doubt (I'm a dual citizen, hello Theresa May!), rather focusing on the (perceived) long time I've been here...when I study NCVs with my people, I introduce the PPC as the "classic" tense for "started in past, has continued to now", make them aware of NCVs (which must obviously be used in the PPS form to illustrate the same concept), and add that live and work should technically be used in the PPC, but are, as I say above, "honorary NCVS" which can be used in the PPS as well (my hunch is they're thus flexible because they're essentially the two most important things we do in our time on this planet, so the hive mind has deemed it acceptable to grant them honorary NCV status...!) OK, I hope that gives you food for thought, and if you feel like chewing the fat / arguing the toss / debating the merits of my points, feel free to answer! :-)
your grammar explanation is the best I have seen or heard as an English learner and user.
IS VERY AGRADABLE TU CLASS AND YOUR CONVERSECION IN THIS LESSON

Can native English speakers explain the perfect tenses as clearly as you do? I like the examples and explanations you provided in the video, and I have shared it to my friends who are interested in English learning. Thank you so much. You are an amazing teacher.
Many thanks, Emma, you have been doing a great job, but could you neglect the background sound, because it is a little bit distracting.
Ouh, I love this video and the other one! The part that confusing me all this while. I didn't know how and when to use them. Now, I become clearer about these after watching these videos. But, there's still something that confused me. When do we need to use 'had'? I know generally that 'had' is a past tense or to tell something in the past, but I mean, what is the time frame to use 'I had been living...' or 'I had used...' Glad if you read this and noticed about my inquiry. Thank you for making these video. Btw, you look lovelier in this vid hii~
As long as I have been familliar with your class I have been watching your videos .I am very much benefitted from your video

When you said "She has been borrowing our car every Thursday" I had a confusion with using the tense when comes to routine, do we not use a simple present tense when talking to an event that happens often? -please help
@mikemorgan5066
4 жыл бұрын
There is a subtle different between “She borrows our car every Thursday” and “She has been borrowing our car every Thursday”. Both are 100% correct. The first sentence implies the action is ongoing and she is still borrowing the car on Thursdays. The second second is the present perfect continuous tense. It’s an action that started in the past, continues in the present , but it’s not clear if it will continue in the future. For example, I could say “She has been borrowing our car on Thursdays, but she bought her own car.” Don’t worry about this one! Just know that you’re right and you can use the simple present tense if the action is ongoing.
she is so cuteee ... thanks 😍
