I have found that a welders scalier works like a dream on removing dried flaking bottom paint it's as fast as sand blasting with out the cost. And the mess but only works on dry paint, It worked for me.

Some people will originally tape up the boat, Then etch primer the boat, Then the first coat of Anti Foul be painted Red, When dry the other coats in the "Finish" colour can be painted. This is to help give an indicator for when it needs renewing. You also need to know where you are going to use the boat as different countries have stricter laws about being Eco friendly

Quick question: I sanded a metal keel to a fine finish and applied and rust treatment paint. I now have a very glossy smooth finish. Would this be to smooth to apply anti foul directly over or should I apply some sort of primer to give it key first. If so what do you recommend? Thanks in advance. Paul

How/when do you paint the areas where your boat stands are? Also, do you wash or wipe down the boat to get rid of the dust before you paint? What do you use, if you do?

thank you for the video, very helpful, only one question left, do I need to apply more gelcoat on the areas where I can see fiberglass or I can paint on top of fiberglass? And also I have some cracks on the old paint, should I sand it until it disappears ?

Azat Gimranov don't sand like this he is taking off too much, you shouldn't see that much gel coat. Plus you should have a respirator, this guy is old and just doesn't care I guess. That bottom paint is some nasty shit.

I've used an old household vac several times for hours. No problem, except fitting the hose

The Festool vacs have a HEPA air filter on them, so they really keep dust down. A regular vac would work just fine though. I can speak from experience that the heavy duty Festool sanders are magical when it comes to this kind of nasty work.

is it irresponsible to sand the bottom paint without any means of disposing it responsibly? Cause I hear it's dangerous.

Really Happenings that's a generalisation, boat construction material, type of paint, preparation, application conditions, environment boat is in all are major factors for longevity. In temperate climates, a correctly applied quality 2 part epoxy paint system such as Altex will last 5-10 years for topsides and below waterline priming. The antifouling will only last a year or two as it's designed to degrade as part of the process for poisoning would be aquatic squatters on the hull, but doesn't need to be stripped back, just top sanded and new stuff on that. You can get away with this for 5-10 years before a full Greenfield approach.

This is ridiculous. Just slap a coat of paint on there. It's not like this boat is breaking any speed records.
