My favourite part of the “spinning” process is fleece preparation. The more time you spend on this initial part, the better your end product will be. I have a wool carder in our community, but also like to process my own fleeces too. I also prewash the fibre before I send to the mill (much cheaper that way!). A tip: don’t put your dirty water from washing your fleece down the drain….. it’s full of lanolin and overtime will clog up the works. We are on septic system, so need to be very cautious.

That is why I don’t like to work with a row fleece. Too much preparation for me but I know a lot people who really enjoy doing it. 😊

Yeah, raw fleece is a lot of work. But it's fun to do everything from scratch!

Thanks for the video. I have an alpaca fleece which I'm currently processing and picking out VM. So seeing your process was very informative!

@@LindaOfWindyOaks if it's possible I'd love to see how you drum card raw fleece. I've been carding with the tips going in first. I found a better result by brushing out the tips then I wash and while it's wet I usually dye then. Would love to hear any tips you can share.

I don't usually drum card raw fleece. If I'm going to work "in the grease" I'll use hand cards. The drum carder is just too hard to clean. 😄 When I'm putting locks in the drum carder I tend to put them cut end first and I very often will flick open the tips before I do that.

@@LindaOfWindyOaks oh of course if it's sheep's wool. I should have said alpaca 🦙 I've had to wash merino wool before carding. Thanks for the chat!

My pleasure! FYI alpaca can have a lot of dust that can get into your drum carder, so tumbling or shaking the fleece first may help.
