I loved the video. I have my first hank drying right now. It is pretty sad looking but I hope to improve with practice. My rolags are small. I filled two drop spindles, wrapped them on a Niddy-Noddy (from Fiber Art Supply Company.) I counted 14 strands, but I think that was probably too few. But I'm encouraged by your teaching to do more. My fleece was free, I skirted and washed, dried and carded it myself. There is a joy in the doing. I don't know how to knit or crochet- so I have a lot to learn at 75 yrs of age. But thank you Linda.

Extremely helpful, thank you! I find it funny with the arguments after the wash- I took a beginner's spinning class and the instructor didn't tell us about thwapping (that I recall) and DID use a weight 😂 also no rotation of yarn during the drying process. I can just imagine the arguments about which technique to use have caused!

another no cost way to wind a skein with no tools is with your body. I grab the end of the yarn in one hand, put that arm out straight and lock the elbow, and then I wind the yarn between that hand and the back of my neck. it comes out around a yard and half which is nice and I've never felt like I wanted another tool

I am really enjoying your videos, I think it would be wonderful to sit and spin with you , this is a new craft for me (only a couple of months) and I am loving it. Was thrilled to see your gorgeous little tea cosy made with your first spun yarn , your spinning now which produces lovely consistent yarn proves that with practise and determination it is possible . Did you use a pattern for the cosy or make it up?. When you were winding your yarn into a cake I saw all the tools you have and would love to see a video where you talk about each one's purpose. I was interested to hear you mention you have a rigid heddle loom, I bought an Ashford 16 inch and am using my practise spun yarns on that. Rather than have them piling up it it is very satisfying to produce something "arty". Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge, you are great company for me while I work at improving my skills.

Good i formative video. This was a lot of the stuff you have no idea you need to do when you first start to spin. It was nice to see it all in one video, going from bobbin to finished ball ready to knit. Gave a good chronological instruction of how to go about it.

My first hank is drying right now. It is not pretty. I had drop spun two spindle full and only had 14 strands on the Niddy Noddy (from Fiber Art Supply Co.) My carded rolags are very fluffy, but small. When I spin them, I am constantly splicing them and then get lumps. I need to do better. But thank you for your excellent teaching and encouragement.

Thank you! This was such a clear, informative video! I learned a lot! I have only knit yarns that I've purchased but someday I'd love to spin my own. I'm guessing that my favorite part would be the soak and dry part as I'd get to see how that changes the way the fibers behave.

"Stumbled" upon your channel and have been sort of binge watching. I've been spinning for a while now, but have picked up a number of tips/info that will definitely help me improve my spinning. I mostly use a Hansen e-spinner (age and back issues) as well as occasionally a Turkish and Royal Hare spindles. How about a video on how to figure out how much fiber to buy to produce a certain amount of yardage for a specific project you have in mind.

I’m here from Start Up Society! Ohhh, you’ve taken me down memory lane! We had sheep over twenty years ago. I still have my little spinning wheel, niddy-noddy and bags of roving and raw wool from our own sheep (one of which I bottle fed!). Do you know if my roving is still fine to use after all these years? In the past someone suggested it should be re-oiled. Is that true? Excellent video. So glad to “meet” you 🙂. Blessings!

Hi! So glad to meet you, too. Your roving may be usable - it's hard to say without looking at it. It may be a little tender (breakable), but it may be just fine I'd pull off a chunk and see what it feels like. Is it soft or hard? When you take a bit between your fingers and pull, does it snap or break? Or is it nice and strong? If it's really dry, you can spritz it with spinning milk (there are several recipes you can find through Google) to help keep it from frizzing while you spin. Let me know how it goes!

That, hank is a “knot” . A skein is 8 knots. But nobody seems to call them that. The main reason to wet the yarn after spinning is to set the twist. My old info never mentioned thwacking, Or Snapping, and I had done a research paper on it!

In Yarnitecture, she was on Fruity Knitting, too, she explains what thwacking and snapping do, and more. Basically, thwacking semi-felts the yarn, making it stronger and snapping evens out the spin across the whole skein.

I wish the camera was more on the fiber. For example I could not see it in the sink. So maybe tilt your camera more on the fiber and less on yourself. With that said I did enjoy the video and gained a lot of knowledge in the process. Thanks

I used fabric to pad instead of poly fill. I used a flannel or soft cotton. It holds up against compression a lot better!

How do you know if a soap has enzymes? I've tried 10 different searches on google and nothing will tell me, is there a tell to look for?

I noticed you didn't rinse the soap out of the yarn. Why is that. Shouldn't that be removed?

I'll have to double-check the video! Usually, when it comes to the yarn, I'm only using a tiny bit of soap, and then the soak takes care of it.
