I'm military, and that speech goes completely against the ethos that we were taught as recruits. Respect is not something that is a "bare minimum." It's something that has to be earned and can only be maintained through a constant demonstration of characteristics that deserve respect. It's also fragile. It can take years to build and be lost in an instant. Yes, people can have authority over you, especially in the military, but you won't truly respect them until they prove they deserve to weild that authority through their actions
