Preparing the Series III for Arctic Winter

The LR4 sale took longer than planned, and things got pushed back with the Series. I live in the back of it with just the old bed form the Discovery tossed in there. So this is now very much a rolling project.
I do have big plans for the build, but most of these things require a workshop or at least warm weather for me to do. Therefor I'm aiming the make the most out of the stock stup with the little (and thirsty) 2.25 petrol engine.
More on these plans later. Now it's all about throwing it together so that I can head out on the road again!
Cheers, K

Nice looking Series III. With these old-school roof racks on a series III, you really want to install additional support from the waste of the vehicle - the roof line is not that strong and if you put any weight at all up there, it will shake the vehicle to pieces on rough roads. The better racks came with front supports down to the windscreen "hinge" on the bulkhead and to the top of the rear bed and this also gave a bit more support for the load front to back on braking.

  • @kasperhoglund

That failure to start at 13:46 is just a sticky spring on the starter pinion. They get all gummed up over time, and prevent the gear from sliding forward and engaging when the starter is run. Tends to be a little worse in winter I feel. My S3 petrol occasionally does the same. Drop the starter motor out and give it a clean and it should be fine. I tend to use *all* my extensions bars, and slip the ratchet extensions from the front, going under the exhaust manifold, towards the rear, and engage with the starter motor bolts that way.

Kasper I love your videos. Your older videos inspired me to hold on to my kitted LR4 for a while. I'm interested to see how the Series handles more difficult environments compared to the Discovery 4. I have a Range Rover Classic that, even with heavy modifications, feels very dated compared to the LR4. The RRC is pretty modern compared to a Series though. If you keep it up I may get the urge to pick up a series myself. Though, I'd have to put a Rover V8 in it even if just a 3.9.

Great Build Kasper!... As ex British Army Ive driven the Series 3 and more modern LR. The only observation is the tyre on the bonnet.. eventually the bonnets tend to sag with the weight of the tyre more hasty If you sit or stand on the tyre and bonnet.. Sagging causes issues with the top of the engine so something to be cautious of. Side mounting the wheel like the LR Wulf might be an option🫡

@@grahameroberts8109 What we found with extended use on dirt roads was the bonnet cracking either side, rather than sagging. But I would still prefer to run with bonnet and rear door to give two spares - definitely don't be tempted to keep the spare on the roof rack. Apart from the difficulty getting a wheel up and down to the roof, a single spare up there is enough to badly affect the vehcle's tendency to roll, if you put a wheel off the tarmac on a narrow road. I had one with twin mounts inside, but that eats up the useable space and transfers vibration through from chassis to bodywork, quickly loosening lots of the rivets.

Can be registered as historical car, but you would need to keep it original and not drive more than 4000km a year or something. But it’s really cheap to insure either way. 9/10 new cars sold in Norway is EVs or hybrids. It’s very easy to live with a car like that here, since there’s chargers all over the place. However they’re expensive and insurance companies write them off as “trash” very quickly if they even have small damages. Because of the repair cost. My car doesn’t get any “punishment” for being old. Apart from the new E10 95petrol not really being the best for it.

@@kasperhoglund Thanks for your response! Thats what I thought about the "historical" registration. It's kinda the same in germany. Also with that registration the todays emission standards arent enforced on that car. Do you need to change something for that (because the car is normal registrated)? And are you allowed to drive into cities with the car then? Because in germany we have those Emission zones, mostly with 4 (green). So cars lower than that arent allowed to enter. Idk how the situation in Norway is.

@@ItsMeTexx we dont have any of these Zones in Norway 👍 and the few limitations that has been tried has been towards diesel engines. As long as this one is tuned, it runs very “clean”. So to answer your question: I can drive this as any other car. With no limitations or advantages 🤝

I set the whole Lightroom project for 4096x1728 and export with custom settings so it doesn’t add the black bar. Not everyone likes it, but I totally prefer it this way. Makes it look great on phones. And I often watch KZread videos in cinema mode where it’s not actually full screen. So that layout looks best there as well. Also gives a lot of playroom to reposition top and bottom frame of a shot, so I don’t need to think too much when I’m filming all the tripod stuff

Well… First of all, congrats on your journey sir… and YES I will quote you on the number of videos you post sir 😂😂😂 All kidding aside… she looks gorgeous… Having said that, as a Defender Driver I can honestly attest to the ADVENTURE part of driving such a vehicle …😂 I do like the wheel on top of the engine … instead of in my case, hanging of the back… makes for a cleaner look, I think. As far as Spotlights are concerned, I hope you don’t go for LEDs because they could freeze up in cold weather… HELLA spots are nice and you get good working versions that would accommodate the style of the car overall, but that’s just my taste. I do like the military styled windows that slide either forward or backwards… I just find them nice looking… There is ONE aspect of this Landy I don’t like at all sir, that is filling the tank through the cabin, whilst pulling up the seat cushions is a bit … silly … AND … could be smelly too… if you think about it and you want work and sleep inside, so THAT would something I would change … besides… I have the original seats and since I don’t have any heated seats also, I did put on a THICK sheep wool cover, that’s not only keeps my behind warm and comfy in Winter, but ads to the style that I want for my car. But again, we all love different styles… Looking forward for more content and greetings from Germany sir 👋

Thanks! Been using LED lights in -30 with no problems. It’s in the mix around zero c that you can get some ice build up over them. But not a big deal for me. Rather have more lights with LED that doesn’t require such a huge amount of current. But also really want something looking like the HELLA3000 rally lights 😂👍 The fuel filler situation is definitely on the list. The tanks are under the “battery” tray defenders have. And they are sealed with a rubber ring, so it doesn’t smell. But it’s a hassle, so I’ll make something up so I can fill it from the outside. BUT it’s not such a deal breaker that I’m going to spend money on they now 🤝

@@kasperhoglund You have more experience in driving in these type of conditions then I do sir, if your not worried, I’m not worried … and YES energy consumption is a good point 👍 As far as the filler cap situation goes… opening the cabin to the elements while filling up AND maybe spilling something would be a NO NO to me… but like you said… one problem at the time… What I’m happy with in my old car is, the fact that the owner before me did… He did install to little vents to open in the roof… one left, of the center, one right of the center… I can vent the car whilst driving through the windows and the front vents from the original design AND have a breeze goin in summer… and they are small and compose of metal, very durable so they don’t rattle around while I’m driving with the „vent“ open… because, you know Land Rovers …they do get cold in winter and hot in summer 😝

@@kasperhoglund Well… A Alu Cab Roof conversion is ONE option, but that would mean, you cutting away the original roof completely, wich definitely has advantages … also with putting up a roof tent, but you have to consider getting in and out from outside, wich is another option. I just put a single bed inside and have the rest as open space … definitely will change some of the interior, but in such a way as to be easy installed and easy to convert back … but that’s just ME … 👍
