    Jip this is sadly the state of our beloved country! Loadshedding can even go to 4 times a day. Politcians are destroying BUT on ground level people are actually getting along nicely and try their best to make things work!

    Wow - I have never seen a Woolworth's that empty. In Cape Town, you can barely move inside. Loadshedding, as I'm sure you discovered, is very much a moveable feast - two hours one day and six the next, depending on Eskom's "stages". I swear some intersections work better when the traffic lights are off

    Loving this series! Loving the basic travel at this point 👌 I took my family back to SA for a 2 month vacay last year. Was nice to be back, but definitely in a steep decline overall. Drove around in a little NX200 which was great, but it would have been a treat to do it in something a little more rugged such as a cruiser.

    I guess it comes with decades of experience, and a deep knowledge of a specific vehicle, but I'm always impressed by how confident Andrew is about what he buys/builds/fits to his vehicles. There's no "I bought this but I just need to cut a bit off before it'll fit properly". It's just "I'll take this, this and that" and wallop! They're in. Done. Ready to go. I feel like, if I was to inspect one of his vehicles (RRC aside), I'd never find a set of lights that weren't wired-up, a loose armrest, a door that doesn't close properly or anything that was attached "temporarily" using zip-ties.

    Just comment about Snomaster which you presented in this episode. It’s not the same kind of good products which they had sold in the past. Last month I’ve bought new Snomaster and I was so disappointed to find out quality issues that I had to share this experience here. Locks to top covers were installed too high so cover is not closing tightly (door can open around 1cm up) and all together with locks jumps and ring on corrugated roads. Fridge cover provided is way tooo big and not stitched straight. It looks like potato bag not fitting fridge inside. Local distributor was happy to replace product but we found out that all of them are the same !!! I think that small label on the side is explanation (Made in China). Definitely it’s not good product anymore :(

  • @Fe_lix

    @Fe_lix

    Жыл бұрын

    They are short called "split rim" in English but technically they are not. They are locking circle rims and they are safe (at least the Toyota ones), there are no report anywhere of anyone getting hurt by one of them. Split rims were rims where the main body of the rim itself splitted in 2 and yes they were dangerous (they could "jump" in your face if not mounted correctly) but are extincts since the 60's. And to answer your question, yes Toyota still install them on Land Cruiser in some countries. Which I think speak for the fact that Toyota judges them safe.

    Interesting to see a lot of ex-pat comments here. No doubt SA is in major decline. However if you have the means and savvy to work around the challenges, SA is still a beautiful and diverse country, especially for overlanding. I’ve done a lot of overlanding and haven’t even made a dent in what SA has to offer. The diversity and varying geography is not something many other countries can say they have. As always great video and looking forward to watching more of this SA series.

    SA has so much to offer the overlander, and that is why I am building a Landcruiser there. But economically, it's a basket case. Only when one lives elsewhere can one have any kind of reality check of how bad it really is. Most of my touring will not be in SA, because it isn't safe. I'll spend most of my time in Botswana, Namibia and Zambia.

    Those split rims are the one's with the lock rings? We used to have them on semi trucks, back in the day, where the inflation pressures are up to 850 Kpa. Some guys at tyre shops would sit on the rim while inflating! Needless to say, there's been deaths, and even a lock ring that went right through a workshop's roof. I HATE those things.

    We have load shedding to limit the load on the grid because our grid “cannot” support the entire country’s load so they shed some of it. We all play a part in being “shed”. We also get shed when Eskom needs to use some capacity to create capacity (for example, if they need to use some electricity to pump water up dams for an expected peak or heavy usage period like long weekends). We have had load shedding for so long, most of us know what it is for now. We think we are being lied to though 😂

    What about a workshop in which to do the work? One cannot just walk into a workshop and start working on a car. One uses the services of others and they should get paid for those services.

    Could've taken the seats out yourself with a cheap tool kit and still have enough cash to tip the guardian of the car park.

    Possibly a tip for next time? You would then have a tool kit to fix stuff out in the bush when there is no shops to help you, and the guardian could potentially have saved all of your kit from the back of the cruiser at woolworths?

    I guess with the benefit of hindsight, choices are always a lot easier. As it happens, I could have had the car seller remove the seats before I collected the car, but then the tyre guys wouldn't have got their seats that they now use in their lunch room, as well as the not inconsiderable tip. The result would have been that the car guard would have had the tip from the cash I had in my wallet, and there would be no story to tell, and therefore a shorter video. Which scenario worked best? You decide.

    That is true. Instead of nanny, South Africans live in a very dangerous place. And especially drive. It's people ignore the laws and the result is a largely disfunctional country. 10 years and Ive returned to a country that I am so grateful I don't live in any more. Instead I live in a country that works. it just works. The nanny state part is annoying at times. But given a choice, Australia is a f*king fantastic place to live.
