OK - A couple of things. 1) My wife and I used to have an Alpaca Farm. We had a Hydrant water outlet just like you do. Although the water hose is heated the Hydrant is NOT. It will freeze up!!! Get some heat tape and wrap all of the metal parts from the ground to your hose. Run an extension cord out to the heat tape. 2) Where your Grey Water and Black Water comes out down to where it goes into the sewer, will also need to be heat tape wrapped and also wrapped with covered insulation on the outside. 3) Look at having a propane dealer drop off either a 100lb or 250lb tank. That will save a lot of work with 20-30 lb tanks...😀😀😀

@@NomadicSarah Hi! I have done 5 winters in my RV in super cold places in the northeast. Robert is right, but I would take it a step further and say that depending on how cold it gets where you are, wrapping the hydrant with heat tape will not fully protect it because the ground freezes, sometimes up to 2-3 feet below the surface, again depending on the climate where you are, and the water inside the vertical pipe under the top layer of ground will freeze. The way a frost free hydrant works is when it is turned off it drops the water down the vertical pipe 6-7 feet into a bed of gravel. My advice is to use your inboard fresh water tank and pump for normal everyday water needs and fill your tank as needed. That way the hydrant is drained and won’t freeze. Leave your heated hose turned on in between fills of your inboard tank so the water inside the hose does not freeze but be sure to disconnect it from the hydrant so air can get past the hydrant valves and it will drain to the bottom of the vertical pipe. Also, take your water pressure regulator inside, those types should not be left in freezing temps. As I said, I have a ton of experience winter camping in sub zero temps, feel free to reach out if needed. Skirting was an EXCELLENT choice! - Curt

Super smart suggestions

To help with heating your RV pipes, run a drop cord and a 100W light under your RV. The light in a sealed area will raise the temperature. This should help with your propane consumption.

So glad you tested these because I've been really curious. BTW, as prior service Army, "military grade" to us means "made by the lowest bidder" ;)

Headd on over to Lowes, Walmart and get an electric oil filled heater (about $40) you can find them online too they have long low ones you can put under the trailer help keep you warm and use the tall one for inside. No propane.

A moment of silence for all of us that have had to winterize. We live north of Seattle and just put Gertrude our 2018 unity FX into winter storage.:(

Buy some wheel covers. All that money spent on those skirts is for naught when air can get in between the wheel spokes. The hose might be insulated but the spigot isn't. Insulate that. Thank me later.

Invest in a heated vest for the trailer. NOT a jacket. A very convenient warmer IMHO. I bought a Venustas and it's been great.

For winter camping, I always bring additional RV propane bottles. Since you have an SUV instead of a pickup truck, except for filling the extra propane bottles, you will need to run them dry to safely transport on long trips.

Think about a case of bottled water. Keep it in your car as backup. I am in Washington State, in a 40' Montana 5th wheel. Been living full time for about 6 years now, and have had 3 different RVs. Just got my Air Skirts. Can't wait to put them on! Good luck!

It can also be helpful to plug in a light bulb and keep it in the wet bay and/or under your rig. (We run a 50 watt in the wet bay but 100 watt beneath). Also, placing a bluetooth thermometer underneath allows you to see what the air temps below your rig are, and decide then if you need to run propane or not.

oh cool, you're testing the heated hose too! Please do a follow-up on these after winter because I've been researching all these things but haven't purchased them.

Those airbags are cool! We’ve done limited cold weather RVing at ski areas and near ski areas. Have cut Reflectix panels to cover the (single pane) windows. It makes a big difference, able to keep temp up with electric heater on low 750 watt setting in our 28’ Class C. Our dump valves and water connections are in a wet bay so I put a 60W light bulb in a clip lamp in there. Gray/black/fresh water are in heated basement. Also use thermometer with remote wireless temp sensor to monitor wet bay temp. If I was going super cold those airbags would be the ticket. I use an infrared thermometer to check temps/air leaks. If you use an electric heater beware insertion wear at electric plugs. They can wear over time and a loose connection can get warm at the plug, fires have happened. The infrared thermometer can check the plug temperature. We use an oil-filled radiator from Home Depot in our sticks & bricks to burn off our excess yearly banked solar. Recently replaced the outlet as the heater plug was up in the 80s temp. After replacing it was in the low 70s. I first became aware of plug wear after wearing out some front USB ports on a computer, now I have 6” stub cables on those too! Good wintering! Do you have snowshoes or XC skis or are you an Alpine skier or snowboarder?

You also may want to get some heat tape to attach to the bottom side of you sewer hose or you may find yourself with some frozen drains on a cold night.

RV life is not cheap, all your sponsors are really good products. If you’re going to do is worth to do it right 😊

Skirts are very effective but are not practical for those of us who stay a day or two before moving on, Sarah. Our options include burning propane with part of the heater’s warm air going into the RV’s basement. Your TT is one of the best in cold weather.

Western Washington is a fun place to live. I was raised in Washington and loved it. Now I live and travel around Central and Eastern Oregon year around. This morning it is 11 degrees of of doors. I have boon docked at temperatures as low as 0 degrees F. Oh, yes you do burn a lot of propane at those temperatures. I always carry 3 full 30 # propane tanks when boondocking during the winter. I rarely use a hose to provide water on demand for my travel trailer. I have 60 gallon water tank and I fill it before each trip. I have never had an issue with the water tank freezing. The only issue I have ever had with my water is when towing my trailer during extremes cold weather I have had my water lines freeze. It did take a couple of days in camp with the furnace running to thaw the water lines. Modern trailers with pex water lines are very forgiving to freezing, not like the old pvc or copper water lines used in the past. Wintering in RV resorts is different than winter traveling and boon docking so your solution works for you, great. My experience is that winter camping in an RV is great. Just like snow camping you loose the crowds and it is so peaceful. If you ever travel to Central or Eastern Oregon regardless of the season so much to see and enjoy here. Enjoy the freedom an RV has to offer.

The yard hydrant has a shut off that is below the ground frost depth. So for example in Minnesota our Fire hydrants have shut off valves most likely 10 feet down and when shut off the barrel drains. So when you shut off the hydrant make sure to take hose off to allow air to get in and not create a vacuum. You could put on a Wye connector shut off water and open wye to allow air in . Good luck.

Hi Sarah as your finding out running the propane furnace builds up humidity. We run our space heater to help cut down on this. Something else I do is I take the door off the area that leads to the access to our plumbing and I sit the space heater right by the access so the pipes won't freeze and with a space heater it's a steady heat. Where the propane does allow temps to drop where your pipes are at. I would leave your propane furance on in case the breaker at your site gets tripped and your space heater won't run. Sorry, you mentioned picking up you unit in Eugene. The other two dealers in Portland & I believe in Ashland are corporate dealerships. Sutton was the very first Air Stream dealership in Oregon.

Great video! You shown your waste water pipe going to the sewer but you didn't show how you protected it from freezing.

Before I purchased my full sunshade for my RV and truck the ones are cut in half a thin wire is around the edge they can be folded when not in use they are perfect for all season on the tires for cover resist sun dry rot protection from elements I use them on my airstream and my RV boat tires they work great amazing fit

I love the airskirts and the airstream, however I'd rather have a diesel heater. The condensation and potential propane smell would drive me crazy. It's unfortunate most classic RV campers come with propane as a heat source. I'd rather go with a woodstove and a diesel heater.

Theirs a lot of talk about heaters. For me you can't beat the old school boy scout camping hand warmer. Fill it with lighter fluid and your set for at least 6hours. Very safe, compact, and easy to use!!! I've found them at Estate Sales, and garage sales too. Very cheap, long lasting. Again, I enjoyed your video. I'm going to subscribe...

I'm about to winter in my RV here in Vermont. How long can you run a space heater off of your power station? I trip the breaker at the house I'm plugged into, if I run the microwave or coffee maker at the same time as my space heater... I also purchased an electric blanket and 2nd space heater, so looking for more options (so I can run all of this safely) besides installing a 30 amp plug onto the house. Thanks!! I need these air skirts too!!!

I noticed that ones you had on the ends stuck out a bit longer than the ones going length ways. maybe if you swapped them around, they might fit better, and you might get that cosmetic look that's eluding you.

Noticed the sharp angle stress on your sewer hose where it connects to the trailer. You need to get a 45º clear sewer angle connector. Otherwise, you are going to have a sewer hose failure - which is never pretty.

I just looked up your link. They are rather pricy. I might have to skip it this year. But I was thinking - you could put a temperature gauge under your camper- by your tanks/hoses so you can see if it gets below 32 for a sustained period of time.
