Awesome review @Supersonic Kiwi! Glad you weren’t one of the ‘jettisoned’ passengers - what an unfortunate situation for those unlucky enough to be caught up in- I’m sure most of them would have had subsequent missed connections. Sure is a long hike to the Middle East from the East Coast, let alone NZ only about 10-11 hours from Perth!

  • @SupersonicKiwi

So fortunate not to have been bumped! I think there's another flight SYD-DXB later in the evening, so they might have been moved to that, but as you say there'd be so many missed connections. Something like that can muck you up for a day or more. Yes, it is a reasonably long haul, but that's a cost of living on a smallish island in the South Pacific. I'm finding that I'm preferring transiting in Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane over going via Auckland, as Auckland is soooo slow at processing outbound and inbound passengers at the moment: it seems less risky to know that the total elapsed time is longer than to roll the dice that you'll make your domestic-international transfer. I hope you have a relaxing summer!

Thanks! Yes, I think you are right, CHC-SYD would be the most affordable way to experience their Premium Economy cabin. They have a shorter flight in the A380, but it’s in Asia, so you’d have to get there to try it, and I’m not sure if there’s a Premium cabin on those planes.

It was really great, and because the section is so small, and is near the door, everyone in premium economy gets off pretty quick. Having said that, it is more money, and you still get to where you’re going - if the choice is between one trip in premium or two trips, I tend to go with the additional trip, but if the upgrade price is not to bad I’m totally there for it!

@orangesub121 I’ve heard great things about Qatar (but have never flown them), and you’ve seen my Emirates experience. They’d be my top picks, and I’d go Qatar so I could review it, but most normal people would probably go with that they’ve done before. You could possibly go Thai (depending where in the UK you are), or Singapore. The problem with Singapore could be the number of flights, depending on how they route you, or they might outsource to another Star Alliance airline, like Lufthansa, which I reckon would be less fun.

@@SupersonicKiwi I've traveled with Emirates but this was back in 2011-2013. They were consistent on all 6 flights. Etihad to Australia / New Zealand in 2019, they were pretty flat! Singapore Airlines, flew from LHR to SIN, 'twas during covid so difficult to judge really, as movement on the flight was strict / service was limited. My brother is flying with Qatar from MAN to SYD. I'll certainly ask his opinion but he'll just say it was a long flight and pay little attention to much else other than counting down the time.

Great video! Lucky you made it to Dubai! Looks like it was a great flight. Travel these days is so uncertain and can be very risky if you have a lot of connections. I can't imagine how disruptive it would've been to the 60 passengers especially given Dubai is less of a destination and more of a stopover airport.

Thanks! There was an audible gasp from the entire departure gate when they made the announcement - followed by a LOT of chatter and rummaging in bags while people checked to see if they were impacted. I was very relieved that I wan't bumped, mostly because I was on my way to my holiday and I only had a couple of days in Cyprus and could have missed my next flights to Italy. Dubai is just a little bit crazy - tens of thousands of people criss crossing between flights.

I’ve only flown premium economy on Emirates twice, so I’m not en expert, but I can give you my opinions. I like the 2-2 configuration beside the staircase, but the left side has an office with an annoying light - the right side is better. I really liked it and can’t think of any significant problems. I used a cable to connect my headphones to the inflight entertainment unit. Apparently some Emirates aircraft have Bluetooth, but none of the planes I’ve been on have had it so best to have a cable.

Thanks! There were a few shakes, but nothing too bad. I find the A380s to be a smoother ride than anything else, probably because of their size. But any of the wide body aircraft (777, 787, A350, etc) are pretty smooth. Having said that, I always have my seat belt on when I’m in my seat, just to be on the safe side.
