Premiere screening of videos made by older people for the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing

In 2021, groups of older people from Canada, Jordan and Togo were involved in a project to ensure their voices were prominent from the start of the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021-2030). This project used the participatory video methodology to meaningfully engage with older people and their lived experience, perspectives and expertise to find solutions to problems that matter to them.
The project’s first stage resulted in three community-made films from each site, capturing lessons learned from the process. Watch this live premiere screening event back to view the films and to hear reflections from older people and local partners involved in the process. You will gain insights into how older people think, feel and act towards age and ageing; and learn more about the barriers older people face in rural and urban settings.

The UN Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021-2030) envisions a world where all people can live long, healthy lives. To make this vision a reality, stakeholders need access to a wide range of knowledge produced across disciplines, sectors, stakeholders, and regions. Hearing and amplifying the voices of older people is critical to the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing's success. Older people are agents of change, knowledge holders, employees, workers, carers, volunteers, service beneficiaries, consumers, and much more. It is time to listen to what older people worldwide have to say about healthy ageing.
Participatory video is a visual media tool that uses a set of techniques to explore issues and mobilize people to tell their stories and take collective action. This powerful and creative process puts older people at the centre of the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing. Participatory video showcases one way to amplify the voices of diverse older people and strengthen their meaningful engagement in the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing's activities.
