I’ve used all four for real client work, and I love them differently. It definitely took me 3 months to really learn AVID. I really love editing on it now. I’ve been switching between Resolve for shorter projects and Avid for longer ones. I use Final Cut for clients who just want to make up to 60 vids for social. I completely agree with what he said about not quitting. If you love editing, you won’t let any piece of tool stop you-and learning something new a long the way is always rewarding.

AVID is fucking fantastic I love the hell out of that program. I edit small cooking TV shows for contracting clients in other states and archive news segments for an ABC Affiliate. We only use AVID media composer when archiving footage, it's just a perfect tool for cutting and archiving. The simplicity and power of how AVID was designed just makes a lot of sense. Now I do agree that it's not the easiest program to learn. It took me almost a year with a thousand hours of editing to truly master everything AVID offers. I'm already well acquainted with premiere pro however I still think Premiere Pro is better suited for smaller project because of its ability to integrate AE and Illustrator. But AVID works just as well for KZread. I can get the job done faster with AVID media because of its amazing keys and functionality.

You can't learn an editing software in just few days, trying to edit a single project. It appears that you miss some basic knowledge in Media Composer, so it doesn't work for you. For example: 1. You can in Media Composer, change the angle in multi cam edit without going to the beginning of the clip. (ALT+CLICK the angel, or right click the clip in the timeline) 2. You put your cursor on a filler and expect a color effect to be applied. You have an on screen text box saying you can't apply a segment correction to a filler. 3. You don't loose anything when working with dual mono tracks. You can easily keep your PAN (It's just a one time option to set) And this are just few examples. I am sure your export problem could be easily solved. So, on the one hand I don't expect you (or anyone) to know any software in just few days, but on the other, posting a "compare" video, when you miss some basic stuff is not that good i think.

Hi! You make a good point, however I do believe it's still valuable in the sense of seeing how easy/difficult it would be to switch from premiere to each of these programs. Of course spending years on each program would allow you to learn more about how each of them work, but if you're thinking of switching, you probably won't keep using all of them at the same time until you decide to switch. Also, it wasn't a few days. It was a few weeks of tutorials before actually even opening the programs. Plus all the bits of experience I had prior to starting the comparison :) But thanks for sharing the answers to some of the problems I had!

None of the 100 tutorials I watched mentioned these things, but none of them really got into the nitty gritty of a "real" project. The examples were always just a couple of clips to get the point across, but don't give you the full context. But you're right! With enough experience, I'm sure this program is great. There must be a reason it's still the Hollywood standard? Anyways, thanks for watching :)

Avid can be used for KZread. It’s actually a pretty easy program to learn. The color correction didn’t work for you because you probably didn’t put a CC effect on your clip. Can’t say why you couldn’t export, but transcoding to DNxHD would probably have helped but I’ve had no problems export on a AMA timeline. Also Avid is rock solid stable when it comes to editing. And super quick once you get the hang of it. So sure - it cannot beat Premiere with how well it integrates with After Effects and Photoshop but - neither can FCP or Resolve. Fusion is powerful, but talk about learning curve. And Motion is terrible so you’d probably choose to do workflows with After Effects even if your a FCP/Resolve/Avid editor.

You're right, you can't compare programs if you don't dominate them all enough, I've used Avid for many years and now I'm using more Premiere, I handle them pretty well and I can tell you that I do the same with both, the procedures are sometimes different but I achieved good results happily, which if true is that Premiere can be more practical for some details like audio filters that are already included , in Avid MC they have been systematically removed because they are in ProTools, and a few other things. Great video man. Fellow South African and Resolve user here. Quick comment on 8:37 - When you drag an audio clip to the timeline in Resolve, it changes the audio track to either stereo or mono based on the first clip you drag onto the track. If the first clip you insert is in mono, that whole track will become a mono track. In your example, you probably inserted a mono clip onto an existing stereo track. If you just dragged that mono clip down onto a new track, it would automatically create a mono track for you.

I’ll admit, when I had to edit my n FCPX because it was at a client site, I had to force it to work like a track based system by laying down a placeholder track. One thing with FCP is to use smart collections (and keywords). You can create “bins” on the fly by selecting the metadata you want to use (haven’t used FCP in while, so I may have over simplified it). Recently been doing a lot of work with Premiere, and just cut a documentary with it - I kept thinking I would loved to have smart collections, especially for footage where it could fit in several places in the story. Currently learning Avid, b/c, well, as you said, it’s the industry standard in Hollywood and I’d love to be able to be up for some of those jobs. Some of the higher-end features on Avid seem really sweet, though as you pointed out, some of the more mundane tasks seem a bit more complicated than they need to be. Thanks for doing the comparison and not getting bogged down in the minutia. And it was nice to see a comparison using a real world example that compared apples to apples.

The thing about DaVinci Resolve is that you don’t have to worry about Premiere Pro's dynamic linking. If you're working with log footage, you need to set up the color space correctly. Additionally, if you want to extend a clip, you need to redo the whole process, which is frustrating. In contrast, with Fusion, you can accomplish this easily. While there is a bit of a learning curve, it's not too difficult. I learned the basic tools and then gradually explored other nodes by going through the manual. And it’s fantastic. And also the recent version ui of premiere is all cluttered

Just found this today, but yes you can edit clips in the Fairlight panel, really strange you couldn't figure this out. If you needed access to the media pool you just have to click it to open it up. And you can definately just drag clips as needed. Odd. Personally I find fairlight extremely powerful. And you can also just change the track from stereo to mono if needed.

I use Avid on a daily basis, but appreciate what the other editors have to offer. Avid handles long-form really well, but like you said, it's not a compositing tool. Premiere is frustrating from the standpoint of their buggy releases. DR has some really interesting features and you can't beat it's color grading. Great summation!

I have met very few people who have jumped ship to Da Vinci from FCPX and PP. I think the reason why a lot of people use PP a lot is because of its cross platform (which I think Da Vinci is sneaking its way up there) whereas FCP is only Mac OS which does suck (and updates are very seldom). anyway cheers!

I have used all four and busy switching over to resolve from premiere, my verdict: FCPX - I haven't used really, only the older versions of FCP but those felt too user friendly, akin to using Windows Movie Maker on windows 7, felt too simplistic to be taken seriously.. I then got a tv job where I was editing long format episodes on Avid for about 4 years. Avid - is great, really makes alot of sense with work flow, but it is unnecessarily complicated and feels like a deliberate ploy to keep the masses out, kind of like how medical jargon is written in latin... Like why all these extra steps I have to learn and remember 🤷🏽‍♂️ Premiere Pro - Love it, been the standard for the longest time, crashes sometimes, especially on "heavy" effects but I think this is also machine depended.. All that being said, I hate a subscription model - as a freelancer who also subcontracts for other production houses with their own gear and software, I find payment that subscription a nuisance in the months I hardly use it for my own projects (which include photography work mostly).. Which has lead me to the program I'm currently learning.. Da Vinci Resolve - the way I feel about this program (granted its only been 3days of youtube University and learning from scratch) is, like when I first discovered Lightroom - where has the product been my whole life and why did it take me so long to switch!? I haven't been using resolve long, but it feels like the one for the future, I'm still using the free version and will be getting the full program soon, then I won't have the stress of subscriptions and just use it when I need. Switch my adobe plan to the PS and Lightroom package (more resonable - wish there was a once purchase too)..so Da Vinci looks promising won't lie - now just to re-learn all the crap you can do in Premiere. Also side note, thinking it will be hard to switch between programs for work flow.. As my clients will be using Premiere for the fore-see able future..and I'll be using and trying to upskill my resolve editing.. Eish, that might be a hassle.. lol

Avid is Amazing with Project Organization and Audio, Avid is the Only NLE software you can directly Punch in Audio, and now you can Directly Export audio from Media Composer to Pro Tools which I really like. I use Final Cut Pro as Secondary because I’m a Mac User, It’s a one time $300 purchase and I love the built in sound Effects, Titles, and Effects.

Not transcoding was bad, but you should have tried to mixdown your sequence before doing what you did (Mixing down in Avis is the act of making a brand new MXF of the contend that you have selected in you sequence, and yes, it can be the all sequence.) It bakes all the effects, and then Avid doesn't have to process them on export, which, exporting your AMA linked sequence with effects on every of those AMA clips is probably what failed you export. But I'm pretty sure Avid would have mixdowned that same sequence without any issues. Also, I usually export a Prores or an MXF and compress to H.264 outside of Avid. Avid can do it, but it takes a lot of time for some reason. I only export to H.264 from avid very short clips that I need to send a producer for approval like less than 10mn.

I think one thing to consider and why AVID is so popular is enterprise/group work on a project. AVID was built from the ground up to work well with multiple users in the project at the same time and often it will be on a Nexis system allowing multiple users to edit within the project simultaneously. I know Premiere and maybe DaVinci have started to implement more functionality in that regard but from what I can tell Avid is still the best at this. This also made AVID remote friendly years before remote work became the norm. While it’s definitely not the one stop shop of Premiere or DaVinci it’s still the best at handling multiple users in a project simultaneously.

I am starting a new job at a tv station and they are using Avid which gives me PTSD. I first had it at an ABC station and all the computers were crap and it constantly did what you had it do in color mode, and the computers would lock up until it finished exporting so I was using 4 computers at once. Once a year I try very hard to get Avid to work, but it always ends up breaking on me with windows magically flying around then I change a workspace, new ones poping up anytime I load in, and the video preview windows stretching horizontally. And the constant breaks like what you had in color mode. I start this job on tuesday and I'll have less than a week to be Avid Certified. I have technically been avid certified since 2016 and the ABC station, but I have never, ever gotten Avid to work. Im beyond upset with the program, and I think Avid might be the reason I end up let go. If anyone could explain how or why Avid would be breaking so much for so many years on different systems, tell me. Every other NLE is gravy.

It’s fast, it’s concept is very good and it isn’t overloaded with stuff I don’t need. Avid MC has, hands down, the best trimming tool I’ve ever used, but it’s clunky for fast delivery. For longer projects (short movies and Web series) I either use Ppro or Avid. I’ve edited a lot in DVR lately. It’s actually quite good as an editor too. Outstanding as a grading tool. The points U made In your Video are obsolete cause you don’t know Avid MC well enough.

As much as I hate transcoding, I do it in all programs. The snappiness of working with transcoded footage is well worth the time it takes. Anything that gets in the way when editing is something that needs to be deleted. It's the zone you get in and having to fuss around with this or that little thing to twiddle a dial... nonsense, get rid of it. Editing is akin to playing music. Once you are into a cut anything that pulls you out is detrimental in my opinion and that includes waiting for that half or quarter second after hitting play when working with non-transcoded non-native footage.

That has changed a lot recently, and now people have a lot of options. However, as I said in the video. The statement that Resolve is better for the color correction does not correspond to reality. Avid represents industry standard Workflow for television and cinema, and not just a program as other participants. It makes no sense to reason what of them is better. This dispute is similar to a comparison of Blender vs 3DSMAX vs Maya OR After Effects vs Nuke. If you are working in the industry (or are you planning to join it), not in the garage, then you choose industry tools that are suitable for integration systems, where there is a division of labor and media server.

If your working for a shop that has separate divisions for Edit and Color, then yeah...learn Avid if you want to be and editor and Divinci if you want to sit in the colorists chair...with the caveat that you learn how to use the Davinci console too...cuz that’s what will make you work quickly and justify your $120k+ salary
