It's 6-1 already, and back then most teams have 3 or 4 super strikers, so he wanted to give Sheringham and Ole a chance to score. He definitely wouldn't have made this substituting if it was 1-0 or 2-0.

What Ole wouldn’t give to have these Beckham crosses in his team now.

Filthy, aren't they? He sent those crosses with such precision that they basically landed on the other players' feet. Even if he was chasing down the ball before it went out of bounds, like he did with one of the goals (Cole's I think?) here; even with that (and a defender in hot pursuit), boom! The most beautiful missile right in front of the goal; perfection. Where the hell did he get that skill from? And made it look so effortless.

Couldn't tackle for toffee, but he made up for it by being a deadly finisher, a clinical, strategic, sublime passer and reading the game well. My favourite midfielder of that era by miles. Seems we finally have someone in the team in a similar mould with Bruno Fernandes. Let's hope so anyway.

Beckham was overrated as a celebrity and I think that made a lot of people underrate him as a player. When someone is that famous, people want them to fail, but he's one of the finest fooballers of my lifetime.

@Al Cipta yes, CR is only master for direct free-kick, he'd always try to shoot. But David Beckham was monster in any set piece situation, whether he chooses to shoot or to crossed the ball in to the crowd, both were dangerous

I think it was either one of the Ex players or managers who said that this beating sold Man United to him from then on.

American MUFC supporter since 1996 here. This was the first home match that I attended. Old Trafford was (still is) such a football cathedral that I was almost in tears upon entering. My memories: wonderful match, amazing atmosphere, and quality of footballers on our side. We were so dominant that season. We won the league trophy by 18 points, and the supporters were still complaining about goalkeeing (Peter Schmeichel had just departed.) Thanks for the memories.

This is the epitome of everything that made united great back then. Scholes from outside the box, Beckham assist Cole header, ridiculous Scoles skill, Beckham wonder free kick, Solskjar super sub goal. It had it all.

I was a baby at old Trafford for this game!!! Beck’s the free kick specialist was a key part in our team, wish we had another like him
