Premature Baby Hippo Fiona is 4 Months Old - Cincinnati Zoo

It’s hard to believe that Fiona is 4 months old! We celebrate how far she’s come in those few short months. She was born on January 24, six weeks premature and weighing only 29lbs. Average birth weight for a hippo is 55-100 pounds. She required 24-hour critical care for several months. During that time she gained millions of loyal fans that have been following her progress and rooting for her health. We can now say she is a healthy young hippo, weighing in at 254 pounds this morning, and has mastered the art of navigating deep water. She is interacting face to face with both of her parents daily through a protective barrier, working toward a family reunion in the future. We are hoping that visitors will be able to see her this summer and will keep you posted on when that might happen. We can’t wait to see what the next 4 months have in store!

Fiona has come such a long way! Thank you to everyone that has taken care of her as she grows up. Can't wait to see her interact with her mom and dad.

She has already been interacting with them through a barrier. Once the vets and the keepers feel comfortable enough, Fiona will share the same enclosure as her parents.
Four legged babies are so cute. Amazing how she instinctively know to hold her breath under water.
There is so much love and dedication by the staff to keeping that little preemie baby alive!! Fritz is cute but he can't hold a candle to his big sister Fiona and just seeing what a big, beautiful and healthy hippo she's grown into is just amazing. And that leg bite will never be forgotten by all of us who sat by our phones and computers day after day hoping that she would survive! That's an amazing family and they have provided us many years now of entertainment and happiness
Seeing her with the tubes in her snout is heartbreaking. But seeing how happy she is in the water is makes it all worth it.
This little hippo is the cutest thing I am so glad she survived
She is 10 times cuter in person! 😍

How one animal can bring so much joy to so many people. All these people taking care of fiona are blessed.

Fiona and her team have overcome her being a preemie. Congratulations to you all. I'm not sure I could leave her to let her go out with Bibi and Henry and be a hippo. She is so sweet!

This is one of the cutest things I've ever seen. 👍 Great Job taking care of lovely Fiona. Such a silly girl , showing off her new moves 😂. Sometimes this world brings you down and then i see something like this and still have hope.
Thanks for being hero's to little critters like this. The world is less awful with such beautiful beasts in it.
