Predator Hunting || Wild Dogs in Australia || Shooting with Thermal || 6BR & 6.5PRC
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
Wild dogs in my local area have been attacking livestock and causing havoc to landowners, in this video I'm out on a contracted shoot targeting these troublesome predators. I'm running the Pulsar thermal gear in an attempt to lower pressure being applied as animals venture out into the paddocks after dark. It's often a balance with wild dogs if they are friend or foe, but this is a never ending battle which many landowners in Australia contend with.
Watch the video and you'll see how everything unfolded across two separate nights.
All animals shot are in alignment with the NSW DPI Wild Dog Management Strategy 2022 - 2027.

I am a vertebrate pest control - contract shooter in NSW. For those wondering about the suppressor, I hold the necessary permit in NSW to do so. If seeking information regarding that, please check the FAR webpage for details. All shooting is performed on privately owned farms, with exclusive permission granted for paid services.

Rifles used, I always get asked that:
My 6BR is a custom Tikka T3, 18" Carbon Six CF wrapped barrel and Hi-Tec Industries CF stock. The suppressor is made by Shawmac Industries, which works amazingly well on this cartridge shooting Hornady 87gr Vmax Projectiles (all ammo is reloaded, no please don't ask me for load data as I don't share this information). Thermal scope is a Pulsar Thermion 2 LRF XG50.
My 6.5PRC is an Australia GCPD Arms Elite Series II, 24" Carbon Six barrel all sitting in the GCPD Arms fully adjustable chassis. Suppressor again is a Shawmac Industries (although larger), and I'm shooting Hornady 147gr ELD-M projectiles. Optic is a Athlon Cronus BTR Gen 2 4.5-29x56mm FFP fitted with a Pulsar Krypton 2 XG50 thermal clip on.
For scanner duties, I'm running Pulsar Merger LRF XL50 thermal binoculars which are amazing.

Love your work mate. Regardless of the “soft” types who don’t understand feral eradication, your doing a great service to farm folk and all livestock

Good work Nathan, I've said it before mate I wish I could get out and still have a shoot ! But I know that your out there doing an excellent job ! I can't understand why those dogs never look Happy !
Loving the Smurf Gun, looks great with the Carbon barrel. 😎
Great work as always Nathan. Certainly no gun expert like like yourself. But I have to say, that firearm you used looks absolutely brutal. But effective.
Hi Nathan, nice shooting! For a lower mag scope you could look at the Element Helix 2-16 x 50. I love their scopes, just not sure if they are available in Australia
Nicely done 👍 great job putting them down. Take care of yourself and family and friends and be Blessed ❤️❤️

In the US the problem is Coyotes. I had a dairy, beef, and horse operation on the Oregon coast. Predators like coyotes and dingoes target cows calving or animals alone. And around here clean out small pets. City people that move out here and leave a dog on a chain come home to a chain and bloody collar. Nice job and info in your videos. Always a thumbs up.

I'm not into hunting but I took notice of this due to the feral dogs. Most people don't understand the nature of feral dogs. They don't just kill what they need to eat (which is still a problem for the livestock) they kill everything they can take down (livestock and native fauna). When it comes to feral dogs, there is no room for compromise.
Good stuff Nathan, and a nice rifle mate 👍.

Other than field of view how was the optical zoom clarity at base magnification 4.5 and up to 10x? Did you test out longer shots 250 or over? Those midrange clip on seem to do well with higher quality 1x10 scopes

Hardly ever see snakes TBH, especially at night.
I'm always fascinated about the amount of equipment that is out there these days. The rifles, scopes, thermals, stands, various calibres all look like something from a space age movie. I'm sure it's very expensive. They've come a long way from my first rifle when I was 6, a single shot Lithgow .22. Great professionally produced video, well done.

Always awesome content Nathan. I have similar issue running a Valdada Recon G2 with a base mag of 4.8, I tried a NV add on & all I could see was the range finder box, but not the actual reading. So that went back. Don't really want to change day scope as I have this for its clarity 🙂🙂

Great video mate, we've got some wild dog issues on our property. The mother in law came across a pack of 6 when she was walking her dog. She was quite scared, so i did a patrol with the 12 gauge but couldn't see anything. Going to buy a 243 and invest in a thermal scope.

Hey mate, we’re running a Krypton between 2 day time rifles (still running Thermions on dedicated night guns). A NF NX8 2.5-20x50 is the perfect match on a custom 300WM moose gun and we’ve just set it up on a customised Taipan 223 running a 1-8 LPVO for shooting pest and predators from vehicles day and night. Whilst I find the clip on economical (instead of purchasing more Thermions and swapping back on forth day optics) for me they add to much weight and bulk to be effective with our walk in/around work especially when we’re shooting off hand. Edit* I should add the Krypton on the 1-8 LPVO is only good to 4x as the image blows out due to LPVO’s having no parallax adjustment, we can run it up to 10 by on the NX8 2.5-20 and tune it in for reasonable definition. Have a good one.

Great shots mate, what sort of optics are you looking at? The Barn in Oakey has some good deals on Zeiss scopes like the Conquest V4 3-12*44 for $1249 or Nightforce SHV 3-10*42 for $1475. Otherwise, I have a V4 4-16*44 if you're interested.

Nice new gun. 👌
Wild dog/dingo crosses are becoming a huge pest in the cane growing areas of Queensland. Now we are getting almost daily sightings of them. The ones I've seen are huge, way bigger than the smaller blond dingos I used to see when hunting 25 to 30 years ago. Last year driving the Bruce HW between Mackay and Proserpine, a kangaroo was driven out of a cane paddock by what I suspect was wild dogs directly into my path, this was 11am in the day. People are going to get killed in accidents or stumble upon a pack of them at the wrong time. Planning to setup a subsonic rifle for twilight/moonlight hunting, using my 357 lever with 38 specials or even buying a new rifle in 300 blackout bolt action and running subsonic ammunition. I wish we had access to more of the 9mm carbines like the tombstone lever but without the quality issues. I don’t understand the reasoning behind no suppressor use in Australia, in the UK or NZ it is almost a requirement to use.
Smurf🤣looks great. Looking forward to seeing how it goes on other jobs.

Big time
Wild dogs can be considered a barrier species in Australia. Barrier species, also known as keystone species, have a disproportionately large effect on their natural environment relative to their abundance. In the case of wild dogs in Australia, they can have significant impacts on the ecosystem, particularly in relation to their predation on native wildlife and livestock. Wild dogs, which include dingoes and feral domestic dogs, can have a major influence on the populations of native animals, such as kangaroos, wallabies, and other small to medium-sized mammals. Their predatory behavior can impact the balance of the ecosystem and lead to changes in the population dynamics of native species. Furthermore, wild dogs can also have economic impacts as they pose a threat to livestock, causing financial losses for farmers and graziers. As a result, efforts are made in Australia to manage the population of wild dogs through various control measures, such as fencing, trapping, and baiting programs, to minimize their impact on both native wildlife and agricultural activities.
@nerd1000ify

They're particularly an issue for sheep farmers, cattle are big enough to defend themselves against dogs to a certain extent (especially in a group) but sheep are very vulnerable. There's also a lot of poison baiting done for dogs, usually using 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) as the poison. But with poison baits you'll always run the risk of off-target kills on native animals that scavenge your bait.
Look at the 6mm prc 3300 to 3500 from a 110 grain
