Battle Lines Drawn - Wild Dog Control in Australia with Ground Shooting and Thermal Optics
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
Wild dogs in my local area have been attacking livestock and causing havoc to landowners, in this video I'm out on a contracted shoot targeting these troublesome predators. I'm running the Pulsar thermal gear in an attempt to lower pressure being applied as animals venture out into the paddocks after dark. It's often a false perception with wild dogs if they are friend or foe, but this is a never ending battle which many landowners in Australia contend with.
Watch the video and you'll see how everything unfolded across three separate nights.
All animals shot are in alignment with the NSW DPI Wild Dog Management Strategy 2022 - 2027.
www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/biosecurit...
I am a vertebrate pest control - contract shooter in NSW. For those wondering about the suppressor, I hold the necessary permit in NSW to do so. If seeking information regarding that, please check the FAR webpage for details. All shooting is performed on privately owned farms, with exclusive permission granted for paid services.

Rifle used, I always get asked that - It's a custom Tikka T3 chambered in 6mm BR, 18" Carbon Six CF wrapped barrel and Hi-Tec Industries CF stock. The suppressor is made by Shawmac Industries, which works amazingly well on this cartridge shooting Hornady 87gr Vmax Projectiles (all ammo is reloaded, no please don't ask me for load data as I don't share this information). Thermal scope is obviously a Pulsar Thermion 2 LRF XG50. For scanner duties, I'm running newly announced Pulsar Merger LRF XL50 thermal binoculars.

Hearing dogs howling when your in the wilderness is one of the most unsettling things I’ve ever experienced. The fact they hunt in packs means the are much more dangerous than other canine predators. Love your videos, keep up the good work!

They're a farmers nightmare but no threat at all to people except where idiots try to turn a wild animal into a wild pet by feeding and encouraging them closer. Otherwise they're scared shitless of people which makes hunting and shooting them so hard unless you think like a dingo and get to know their run or how to lure them into shooting range. 200 plus years of being hunted, they not dumb enough to attack what they perceive as the apex preditor, us.

There's no Dingo / Wild dog debate. They are all predators. If it's a dog in the crosshairs, squeeze the trigger. Great stuff.
Great stuff as always mate. Coming from a family of farmers i can certainly appreciate the damage feral species have on our livestock, what you do is absolutely essential for the survival of not only our livestock but also hundreds of native species of birds and animals here in Australia and all over the world for that matter. You're a bloody legend mate and your videos are awesome!

I know it doesn’t mean much to you, but I really admire your courage to show this on the internet. You’re amazing at what you do and you’re doing a fine thing. It’s just a shame that people struggle to differentiate feral invasive species from cute cuddly friends. Keep up the great shooting lad.

Excellent video Nathan. The people who object to pest control aren’t actually animal lovers. They only care about their favoured species. If they cared about native species and the wellbeing of livestock they would welcome the work you do.

That got my adrenaline pumping Nathan. Where I have been working lately, me and the boys have had Multiple sightings of wild dogs in broad day light, working on a remote road in the mountains. None of us have had a rifle, as we play by the rules of the law. Bummer. We all know how elusive they are and are surprised at their braveness and how close some of the cheeky dogs have been getting lately. We told our local trapper who is a contracted shooter to the national park, but it is a huge rugged area with hard access making controlling them even harder. It makes you wonder how many dogs would be out there? My property backs on to the park, it is just a bush block so they don't really bother me too much, but cause my farmer neighbors hell with the cattle and sheep. Great work Nathan the farmer would be stoked!

I started seeing your shorts pop up on my recommended, your a really good shot, it’s such a different landscape over here in America with the wild dogs, cause most of the time we just consider them strays, leave them out in the world, maybe someone picks them up, and takes them home or give them to a shelter. It is a bit of a shock to see the difference in the way things are done, but your doing good work and I support it so I’ll probably be around for more

Ill never forget a conversation l had with a retired farmer camping up at a Lake in the snowies, he told me how he was force out of farming by wild dogs. He ran 2500 sheep out the back of the Brindabellas backing onto Kosciusko NP, farm had been in the family for generations. Dog problem became severe when dogs travelled out of the NP and started attacking his sheep, which quickly became habitual, sometimes he'd lose 10 to 20 sheep per attack, ofter badly mauled and having to be put down. Over a the years he lost over 300 sheep to dogs before he quit sheep and moved to cattle. Wasn't long before the dogs started attacking calves, so he moved out of breeding and into fattening but in the end he was running at a loss and had to sell up. I've camped up that way since and spied dogs that looked more like German Sheppard's. Ill never forget the farmer saying that team from ANU came in took some dogs to test their genetics and found high percentage Dog not dingo genetics. How many native animals these killer must take?

Your sharing your knowledge and the tools you use to succeed. Predator control is a hard job as a business. Customers want results. You provide a valuable service and in doing so your sharing techniques with those is us interested in the “How To”? As a life long hunter there is always better methods that make me a better hunter and shooter. I greatly enjoy and appreciate your productions. Your skills are expressive, your equipment is high quality and you put a tremendous amount of time and expense to provide your services to ranchers and cattlemen who provide us with excellent table fair. The fact is predators are effective hunters and will and do kill more then they eat. Keep doing what your doing. In fact in the last week a friend and I went out and thinned the coyote population near a cattle ranch that had and issue. At the end of a two day calling session dispatched 4 calf eaters. The property own invited back anytime.

Thank you for another great video. I know some people get all upset about the shooting of animals, but proper wildlife management is key to maintaining a healthy balance. I live in Washington state and in 1996, hound hunting of Cougar was eliminated. The wildlife department warned people that that would end up creating issues, and so it did. The number of human/cougar conflicts went up drastically with people screaming about something needing to be done. The state ended up paying contracted hunters to remove a certain number of animals yearly to reduce the interactions. Instead of the state receiving money from licensing and such, they ended up using taxpayer dollars to pay for management. Keep up the great work.

Nice work Nathan I agree with what you said about how frustrating wild dogs can be back in the 70s I had a property owner ask me to help out with a dog problem as he was losing calves so a mate and I set up a dead calf as bait and sat out there with the wind in our face on the edge of his property which bordered the State Forest for 5 nights in a row and not one dog turned up we gave it a spell for 2 nights and they came back and killed another calf we eventually killed a couple but it took a while bloody things nearly drove me nuts . The owner gave up breeding and just fattened older animals for a living.
