Predator 5000 Update - Had to return it - Massive Issues

In this episode I give you an update of being an owner of the new Predator 5000 inverter generator. There were so many issues, Harbor Freight pulled it from the shelves! Local store reps said, hundreds of people are returning them to their store alone. Thank god Harbor Freight saw the demand and made a quick turn around.

It’s absolutely the carbon monoxide sensor. I had the 5000 in the back of my pick up truck and the tailgate was up and it shut off a few times. I knew that’s what it was. I could not drop my tailgate because my camper was hooked up and I could only tilt it down slightly so I put a rag behind the tailgate and it’s still shut off when the wind blew it back. It’s very sensitive so I turned it Away and lifted it up some on the bottom of my pick up truck bed so it was higher up and that worked. That exhaust puts out a good wind flow and if it can’t flow and bounces off of your camper or a tailgate or the wind outside blows it back it will absolutely shut off like it is supposed to. Kind of a pain in the butt but it’s doing what it’s supposed to otherwise Rock ‘n’ roll that is a great generator. I love mine.😎

More than likely, it’s the carbon monoxide. I have an open frame, harbor, freight, inverter generator, and I had to bypass carbon monoxide sensor because it kept shutting the generator down every time the wind would blow the exhaust back at it now it works just fine.😮

THAT'S great to know, HOW does one do that?

With mine, I had to jump two different sets of wires out of the same connector together to bypass the sensor. It seems like almost every unit has a different color code so you can put in your model and see if anybody has made a video on it on KZread on bypassing That sensor

Yea, make sure you don’t have a defective one. I might reach out to Harbor freight to see if they have serial numbers of defective ones.

I think the first recall was the regulator for the propane input. That may be what they are talking about. I just bought one too, still in the box-debating on keeping it cause I’ve seen a few guys say they didn’t fix them properly. There was a guy that said the voltage drop on the 5000 was unacceptable. I want to like it but I need reliability.

@@BeastFamilyADV Smart move,I didn’t. I think the best move is run the heck out of it,get like 200 hours on it.If it’s reliable after 200 hours it should be good. Only time will tell. If mine goes kaput I’ll have to buy another one and return this one, endless cycle😀 We’ll all know soon enough if these are a hit or miss

It's probably the carbon monoxide sensor when a little wind or something blows exhaust fumes towards the sensor probably causes it to cut off

I did think that. Apparently, Harbor Freight called it a regulator

I just bought one and I was trying to fire it up today for the first time and I can't get it to start. I put about 3/4 of a tank of gas in it and I filled it with oil and I also oiled the air filter sponge in a plastic Ziploc baggie. Regardless, the thing will not start up. I shot some starting fluid in the air cleaner and it would stay running as long as I kept pumping it in there. Once I stopped it stopped. It's Saturday so I probably have to wait until Monday to call customer service and see if they can give me any information to get this thing started

So, have you tried to start it without the air filter? Also, make sure your fuel dial is set for gas and not propane. I’ll be honest with you, I have never even heard of soaking filters like that in oil. I know certain filters require oiling but I’m not sure about these. I haven’t done it In either the 3500 I have nor the new 5000 I have with over 400 hrs of run time. For maintenance, I just replace the filter, oil, and spark plug and that’s it

I didn't follow the directions when I put oil in it and had it on uneven ground, and so ya, it kept shutting off and yada yada yada, and so ya...

It’s cheaper just to buy a brand new one. You can always buy a HONDA FOR $3-4k lol besides the original 5,000 that was released. I haven’t heard too many problems. People (full time RVers) have reached out to me with the 3,500 with well over 1,000 hrs on them with no issues and simple maintenance. I probably not send this out to a repair shop. I’d just return it ( if you can) and / or buy a new one. You can buy like 3-4 of these for the price of a similar sized Honda.
