    Frank Criceo, master photographer created portaits back in the late 80s, 90s using what he coined as Porcelain light technique. Taking two key light sources, one defused, one direct focused parabolic dish to chisel the mask of the face. Realize that facial features matter unless your shooting for stark facial reality and impact. It was a great hands on workshop and a nice technique. Used it in the studio a number of times. Double key is a nice look.

    Excellent light setup! James, and anyone else interested, here's a tip that will help - to compare two images in photoshop at the same time: Go to menu -> workspace -> arrange -> 2-up vertical. Next, click on mover tool (hand) and check the box "scroll all windows". Lastly, click on the zoom tool (magnifying glass) and check "zoom all windows". When you scroll or zoom, both windows will be synced!

    This is only the 2nd time I've seen stacked softboxes. The first time was a desert shoot, but for that one, they stacked one smaller softbox (maybe 34") on top of the other rather than one in front of the other. Their use was for lighting a taller area without using an enormous softbox that could have the potential of being blown over. Nicely done using a V-flat to bounce light rather than lugging a separate light/lightstand/modifier. Another informative and excellent video!

    James this is an excellent setup! One thing that you mentioned about the 7 foot modifier that I can relate to is how versatile it can be. Just last week, I was the photog for a Sweet 16 celebration and the venue had a stage that was setup with a throne chair, a decorated backdrop, and a piano that I used to take portraits. I decided to use a single 7 foot umbrella-diffused and it worked perfect for this. I was able to shoot to my left(throne chair), in the middle(decorated backdrop), and to the right(piano) with the umbrella positioned in the center of the decorated backdrop. I moved it may a few feet forward or back depending on the look I wanted, but it just simply worked well. I walked away with many ideas from this, but seeing this use of it has my mind churning on ideas. Great video!!

    Appreciate this one, it’s great to see some of the simpler setups. Curious since you never have light limit do you prefer the bounce to a second fill light? They’re big and cumbersome but I could see it reliably offering a natural consistent fill power ratio. I use bounce all the time in the real world just not studio.

    James, always appreciate your videos and knowledge. Forgive me, but as a new photographer (and whose main work is in science), I like to keep definitions fairly pure when I can. So my first question is this: The 24" Rapid Box (I looked it up) by Wescott is a soft collapsible umbrella like modifier with (I assume) a silver interior. Once you put a baffle or diffusion over the exiting light, it's a softbox. So why are we calling this a beauty dish - which to me means a modifier made out of a type of metal that is firm and non-collapsible. What am I missing here? 2. What was the strobe used in the smaller softbox "Rapid box switch" 3. Lastly, what was distance of both key lights to subject? Thank you for your efforts and video. Much appreciated. Just out of curiosity, where do you get such large pieces of foam core (V-Flats)?

  • @QuantzPhoto

    @QuantzPhoto

    6 ай бұрын

    1) It's technically not a beauty dish but I used it like one and the light is very similar. Collapsible convenience! 2) FJ400 3) isn't measure but just out of frame probably around 4'. Foamcore can be found at sign companies.

    @@QuantzPhoto Thank you so much for the reply and information. If you have the time, just a quick qualification of the last statements. When you say you used it like a beauty dish, you mean bare (no baffle and diffusion panel) or just like a beauty dish with a sock (i.e. with only a diffusion panel)? Second, thanks for the heads up on the large sized foam core. Much appreciated.
