Pre-Rooting Fig Tree Cuttings | Pleased w/ the Results

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Pre-rooting fig cuttings is as easy as it gets. Simply wrap the cutting with a wet paper towel and place them in an environment that's between 75-80F. Over 2-3 weeks, you'll see root formation along the lenticels of the cutting. From there we can see that the cutting is ready to be up potted and is at the perfect state to do so.

A few years ago in Perth Australia, I was given some fig cuttings in December a week before Xmas- in our summer, in full leaf. I was going away that night so I cut the leaves off, wrapped in damp paper sprayed them and popped several into each bag and put them into the vegetable drawer in my fridge. Coming home , I forgot about them and weeks later they were totally crammed with long roots. I couldn't believe it- I untangled the roots and successfully grew them on in pots like you said Ross. Really enjoy your videos- I'm so besotted with figs- all my cuttings are unamed so no idea what figs I have. Cheers Marilyn

@@mssavedin92 these took root in the vege table crisper draw of my fridge. Over our Summer. When I untangled the roots, I potted them up into small pots and placed them in the shade until they sprouted leaves. I just cannot remember if I put plastic bags over the tops of the pots to keep moisture in but would have misted them every now and again.gradually moving to sunlight over time

Cool. I'm gonna try this next time. I had fantastic success with JSacadura's method, but lost a lot of rooted plants in the up-potting. I was super careful with the roots too but they are incredibly fragile. So if I got your method right: Take fatter dormant cuttings and store them in the fridge for up to 6 months in bags, perhaps with just a bit of moisture like a damp paper towel inside. At last frost date place cuttings in bag with moistened paper towels wrapped around each cutting individially @ 75-80F for 2+ weeks. Look for root initials forming. If none, wait. Plant in pots, low light, until chance of transplant shock is over and root formation is clear. Each pot gets small amount of osmocote or other slow-release, plus mycorrhizae inoculant if you have it. I think the key thing is avoiding full root formation so they are not damaged when potting up. The ones I Ieft in coir for extra long and then potted up had much more fibrous roots and seem to be doing well. Fig on!! -fixie

You didn't mention anything about the amount and how often you need to water the cuttings after you plant them into the containers. Rooting them isn't too much of an issue for me. It's keeping them alive after potting them up.

It's important to put the cutting vertical as in the direction you wish to plant. The hormones move to the lowest points and initiate Root growth. If you lie the cuttings on their side you will often get adventitious root formation along the entire underside or in low spots. Cheers Ross

Hey you started your cuttings same time as me. Read my comment from 2 weeks ago above. With the light bulb, it doesnt matter if you use one or not. What is important is the container is in an environment that is 78 degrees. At the beginning of video, he mentioned he used 75 degrees but I know Ross's favorite number is 78. Watch the video like 10 more times. Notice the dates he is doing things too. When is his last frost date? Stuff like that. You cant do exactly what he does because of location and time period. Hey who cares about the light bulb. What is more important is the temperature. You have a light bulb but if the temperature is 66F. Then the light bulb is useless. If that is the case, stop using the light bulb and figure out a way to get about 78F. It's okay to go up and down from 72-78. Something close If you need a quick temperature gauge. The Dollar tree. Works well@@mssavedin92

Are you applying root hormone to cuttings before wrapping in paper towel to start rooting? When transferring cutting from high humidity ziploc bags directly to the pots with soil in a much drier air environment, does this cause shock issues or problems with leaves or cuttings?

Thank you so much Ross, for sharing very knowledge information with the full details. I'm wondering when you stick very fragile initially rooted cuttings into heavily compacted pot soils, does roots are going to break? If yes, roots easily grow back again or it time take more longer time? Is it is better to stand cutting in the pot first and after that, carefully add loose soil and add water to fill-up the air pockets in soil?

I don't do hydro any more except for some herbs n onions. However, I get roots growing after a few weeks by sticking my bunch of cuttings in water. It's a pain, cuz you gotta change the water every few days (if warm, pretty much every day). The cuttings I've stuck into soil with a bag over to retain moisture are doing much better without me even having to add water. I did order an $8 fish tank aerator to see if it'll speed up water rooting or at least keep the water from smelling. Your question makes me wanna stick the rooted cuttings into my herb set up lol.
